2. Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students are
expected to:
1. identify different types of interview;
2. prepare interview questions appropriate
for a research study;
3. appreciate the importance of research in
daily life
3. Most Essential Learning
Competencies (MELC)
The learner is able to plan data collection,
data gathering instrument and procedures
(CS_RS11-IVa-c-3)
4. GUESS THE PICTURE
Directions: Look at the following pictures and identify the
qualitative research data gathering collection procedure
used in the photo. The given letters will serve as a clue to
get the correct answer.
15. What is the most
appropriate data
collection technique in
qualitative research?
Explain.
16. What is an Interview?
An interview is an instrument that allows
the researcher to qualitatively gather
data. Responses during an interview are
usually open-ended. The participants are
prodded to talk about their experiences,
feelings, beliefs, outlooks, etc.
17. Stages of Interview
• Pre-interview Stage. It is when an interview guide is
prepared and respondents are identified and
contacted.
• Warm-up stage. It is the initial part of the interview
when questions that will make more at ease are
asked.
• Main interview stage. It is when the main questions
directly related to the research questions are asked.
• Closing stage. It is when questions are asked to
wind down the interview and respondents are
acknowledged and thanked.
18. Types of Interview
• Structured interview. The researcher uses an interview schedule.
This is a set of prepared questions that are asked from one
respondent to another. The interviewer cannot change the
wordings of the questions nor rephrase the original question.
• Semi-structured interview. The interviewer has a pre-determined
set of questions or schedule but as a researcher you can explore
other information. The respondent is free to answer the questions
which needs longer time to discuss experiences or perspectives on
a particular topic.
• Unstructured interview. This is a very informal form of interview.
An interview schedule is not necessary where the researcher uses
open-ended questions, giving him the opportunity to ask questions
for clarification and deeper understanding.
19. Directions: Identify the following
appropriate actions and steps in
conducting an interview by raising
a Heart emoji if it is correct or a
Haha emoji if it is wrong.
20. 1. Identify the participants in the
study by using purposive sampling.
21. 2. Send the information sheet and
consent form to the respondents
after the interview.
22. 3. Record the interview because you
need to transcribe the gathered data.
However, make sure you inform or
get the approval of the interviewee.
23. 4. The interviewers are strictly
observing the use of English language in
communicating with their respondents.
24. 5. Tell the respondents that you
will handle the information with
utmost confidentiality and care.
25. 6. Develop and use the interview
guide with open-ended questions
for quantitative research.
