1. Roberto Clemente
His great life by Owen R.
"Anytime you have an opportunity to make a difference in the world and you don't then you are
wasting time on this earth", said Roberto Clemente. Some people think Roberto was one of the
greatest baseball players ever to live. In his life he did things that made him a hero and it changed
the world.
Roberto was born in San Antón, Puerto Rico on August 18, 1934 to Melchor Clemente and
Luisa Walker. He had seven siblings! His family was also poor. His favorite thing to do when he was
young was to play baseball. Because he was poor, Roberto had to play with a can as the ball and a
tree branch as the bat. He worked with his dad on the sugarcane field. Sometimes Roberto would
climb up a tree by the baseball felid and watch real baseball while in the tree. In 1952 Roberto
joined the Santure Cangrejeros winter league.
After Roberto's hard work he signed a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers
organization. His hard work paid off. But nine months, three days later on
November 22, 1954 Roberto was drafted by Pittsburgh Pirates! Then at 20
years of age Roberto played his first big league game with the Pirates. One
of Roberto's greatest achievements was when he hit a inside the park grand
slam to win the game in the bottom of the 9th and also when he played his
first all star game. In 1960 Roberto helped the Pirates beat the mighty
Yankees in the World Series. Then year after year
Roberto won more awards. He won 12 straight gold
gloves, he won the MVP, and won another World
Series against the Orioles. He also got married in
1964.
On September 30, 1972, Roberto got his 3,000th hit. Every fan in the game stood up and
clapped and cheered for the great Roberto Clemente, as he stood on second base with a
huge grin.On October 3,1972 Roberto came off the bench to play right field against the St
Louis Cardinals. It would be his last regular season game of his career .Roberto died in an
plane accident on December 31, 1972 while in route to deliver aid to earthquake victims in
Nicaragua
Roberto Clemente was one of the greatest people who ever lived. His work off the field was great, because Roberto
worked with other kids to make them better at baseball. He visited hospitals to help kids to feel better. Roberto risked
his life to help others by trying to get aid to Nicaragua after a tornado.
