Personal Profile
I have worked in the NHS for a total of 22 years from a trainee in 1991 to becoming a
senior biomedical scientist at the age of 24 in 1997. I have developed over that time
excellent practical, clinical, technical and managerial skills which I now use in my most
recent roles outside the NHS. In all of my roles I have been required to manage my own
workload and work independently, prioritising tasks to ensure effective and efficient
working. In both my senior BMS roles I also had to manage staff from the interview stage
through training, day to day management and supervision through to the first stages of
grievance if required.
I have experience in both fast paced, high throughput laboratories with a wide test
repertoire and smaller multi-disciplinary blood sciences laboratories as well as a veterinary
diagnostic laboratory. These very different laboratory environments have enabled me to
further develop my technical and latterly my management skills.
I have been responsible for Warfarin clinics both performing the INR on portable
coagulometers and managing a group of pharmacists who used point of care analysers. This
included training and monitoring quality and performance of the analysers and the staff
performing the testing, ensuring that QA and QC fell within acceptable criteria and
troubleshooting when required.
During my career I have used a wide range of analytical equipment, both semi-automated
such as the Amelung KC series through to automated coagulation analysers such as the
Sysmex CA1500, MDA, IL ACL4500 and most recently the STAGO systems. Automated
blood transfusion analysers have included the Olympus TANGO, Grifols Erytra and Ortho
BioVue systems as well as more manual micro titre plate methodologies.
I have an excellent in-depth knowledge of the Advia 2120i systems as I have used these
analysers from when they were the Bayer Technicon H1’s. I was responsible for the
maintenance, advanced troubleshooting, QA and QC of 7 Siemens Advia 2120i’s in my last
senior BMS role. This included escalating issues through both 1st
and 2nd
level support
processes on a regular basis. I also have experience with Coulter STKR, STKS and MAXM
FBC analysers as well as the Sysmex XE series.
In my early career I worked in a multidisciplinary department where I was responsible for
hormone analysis utilising the DPC Immulite system. To support this role I undertook as
part of my MSc course a biochemistry module which I have found to be very useful
throughout my career giving me a good understanding of the role of chemical pathology in
the healthcare setting.
In my most recent senior BMS role I had a specific interest in quality management and I
was invited by CPA to become a peer assessor a role which was exclusively open to Band 8
laboratory managers only. But they recognised my interest and skills in this area and made
an exception. I enjoyed the role as it allowed me to examine best practice in other
laboratories and bring that back to my own area.
The post graduate diploma in counselling has developed my skills in listening to an
advanced level; this enables me to support those with mental ill health in a counselling role
but I believe this is also a wholly transferable skill into the healthcare business
environment. It has given me a good grounding in acknowledging and accepting differences
as well as being able to communicate effectively in often emotionally charged situations.
Personal Profile continued...
In my private life I have varied interests such a reading, knitting and photography both
behind and in-front of the camera as an amateur photographic model.
I am also a very keen open water swimmer all year round. This interest led me to swim the
English Channel as part of a 6 person relay team in 2012. We successfully touched France
in a time of 12hrs 47minutes and under strict Channel rules which means no wetsuit, just a
swimsuit and a smile! Our success meant we were the fastest relay team that year, an
achievement of which I am incredibly proud.
I go to the gym and ride my bike as often as possible and have recently had a few ballroom
dancing lessons again.
I would be happy to provide further information and details at interview.
