4. Background Information
• Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis
• (short story)
• We all have different styles and experiences
that we bring with us and it’s sometimes no
where close to the person’s shoes that
students expect us to fill. But…
5. What is the Box
• Self-Deception
• Having a problem and not realizing you have a
problem
• Keeping yourself isolated
• Lack of Influence
• Doubt
6. Leadership
• As superviser what do others see?
• If you dictate they see?
• If you are too soft they see?
• Multiple Boxes to worry about
• Supervisee
• Collusion (Which we will get to in a minute)
7. How We Get In The Box
• How to identify the box
• Self- Betrayal: When I betray myself, I begin to see
the world in a way that justifies my self-betrayal
• Behavior
• Collusion
• Here I am in my box
8. How We Get In The Box
• Collusion
• Who feels blameworthy today?
• Here I am in my box
• Instead of saying ‘Hey I’m not perfect, but Im doing the
best I can’
• We self-justify and become defensive
when it comes to blame and thus, we
provoke others to be in the box with
us.
9. How To Get Out Of The Box
• Self-Reflection
• What role do I play?
• What responsibility do I have?
• How do I get students to come forwards?
• How do I get students to self-Identify when they are
being self-deceptive?
• Take responsibility
• My staff was missing things and it was a systematic
failue and I began to own up to the things that were
happening.
10. How To Stay Out Of The Box
• Continue to take responsibility as a leader
when things don’t go how they are suppose
to.
• Change yourself and your behavior.
• You must be willing to see people as people!
