1. GC3: Working With Others
In this production our task was to build the
set for the production of “In the Heights”.
Our group was responsible for the upper
deck of stage right. The upper deck of stage
right consisted of 5 flats. It is meant to look
like 2 apartments. 1 above Rosarioscab
company and 1 above the ground floor flat.
The flat I was responsible for was flat 5 stage
right. The flat closest to the bridge. Firstly we
designed our flats using the script and taking
geographical, social and historical context of the play.
My flat links with the play socially because firstly, I “dirtied the
flat up” so it would give the illusion that its in the suburbs of
New York. Also we decieed on a dark brown colour scheme to
give the illusion that the building was old and battered. Plus I
put a lighter shade of brown bricks on my flat so seperate it
from the rest of the flats. It gives the illusion that the character
has made their apartment special to them. This fits in because
the community of “Washington Heights” is a close, vibrant
community.
Furthermore we research the area where the play was
being set, New york in the 90’s. It’s a South American
community in the suburbs. In Washington heights there are
lots of flats rather than houses so that what we decided to
do. The main thing that stood out in our group research
was the fire escapes on the flats. So across 3 of the 5 flats
we decided to put a fire escape on. However, with set being
limited by space we only went across the top deck. But this
wouldn’t be the case in 1990’s London so the fire escape
fits in georgraphically and hisorically.
