This is my class presentation of M.A, Sem-1 on Paper no.: 103 Literature of the Romantics. In this presentation I am dealing with comparison of two movie adaptation on The novel Pride and Prejudice, among them one is Bollywood and other is Hollywood adaptation.

3. The Movie ‘Pride and Prejudice (2005 film)’ is an English
Adaptation of Jane Austen’s Novel Pride and Prejudice,
romantic drama film directed by Joe Wright.
While, The Movie ‘Bride and Prejudice (2004 film)’ is a
Hindi Adaptation of Jane Austen’s Novel Pride and
Prejudice, romantic drama film directed by Gurinder
Chadha.

As Bride and Prejudice is a bollywood movie it is set in
Amritsar. Wile Pride and Prejudice is set in Rural England.
Bride and Prejudice travels lesser in comparison to Pride and
Prejudice.

9. CONTRAST- Plot
Bride and Prejudice- Lalita is working in farm in the
starting.
Pride and Prejudice- Elizabeth and reading a book.
Bride and Prejudice- Balraj visits India for marriage.
Pride and Prejudice- Buys a house in Netherfield
Bride and Prejudice- Three function in all; pre-wedding
ceremony, wedding and garba night
Pride and Prejudice- two ball Parties.

10. Bride and Prejudice- Darcy proposing for a dance to Lalita Twice
for dance.
Pride and prejudice- Only once and Lizzie consents too.
Bride and Prejudice- Jaya and Lalita accompany Balraj to Goa.
Pride and Prejudice- Jane is invited for dinner.
Bride and Prejudice- Lalita Meets Wickham in Goa.
Pride and prejudice- Lydia directly contacts with Wickham, a man
from military.
Bride and Prejudice- Darcy tells his truth to Lalita face to face.
Pride and Prejudice- he writes letter to Elizabeth.

11. Interesting Change
Lizzy’s visit to Mr. Collins and Charlotte and her visit to
Pemberley.
Changed to-
Chadha joins these scenes together by having Lalita visit the
United States for Kohli and Chandra’s wedding while having the
wedding take place at Darcy’s hotel

13. INDIANNESS IN BRIDE AND PREJUDICE
● Marriage ceremonies

● Colorful, bright indian dressing
● Kohli’s reason to find wife from India- “Indo-Americans as
outspoken, career oriented, and “even . . . The Lesbian!”
● Mr. Bakshi to Darcy on finding Lakhi- “ Thank you my son”

● Streets of Amritsar in beginning- vendors shouting, traffic,
cows, no rules.

16. COMPARISON OF CULTURE
● Bride and Prejudice is showing life of Shikh family, Movie starts with
view of Golden temple and in Pride and Prejudice Collins is
sermoning in the Church.
● Bride and Prejudice everyone is greeted with ‘namaste’ while in Pride
and Prejudice they ‘Bow’ each other.
● Bride and Prejudice shows Indian culture through Garba night
celebration and marriage ceremonies. While Pride and Prejudice
show Ball Parties.
● We see Kohli’s marriage, They marry with the Indian & Christain
rituals. They were asked to kiss and Kohli kisses on hands.
● Bride and Prejudice giving more importance to the marriage
ceremonies scene which we don't find in Pride and Prejudice.

17. Conclusion:
Chada has done a great work, Bride and Prejudice is fast paced and
laugh out loud funny. Chadha expands her Indo-Western canvas to focus
on an international interracial main couple.
Pride and Prejudice seems more faithful movie.
Peter Bradshaw on Friday 8 October 2004 in ‘The Guardian’
“....her film cheerfully invents whole new dimensions of parochialism and
shallowness, vast new acres of unreflecting naivety, that weren't in the
original. All the subtlety, all the light and shade, all the dark undercurrents
of loneliness and helplessness have been merrily chucked overboard, as
if Chadha can't see a nuance without giving it the heave-ho.”

18. Papamichael at the BBC noted that
"...swapping corsets for saris, and polite pianoforte for the Bhagra
beat, director Gurinder Chadha reinvigorates Jane Austen's Pride
and Prejudice with fun and flamboyance".
