2. Type of Documentary
This is a mixed documentary as it has various interviews and archive material. There is no narrator in this
documentary but it is still classed as a mixed documentary.
Themes
This documentary has themes of New York, the exploitation of music and mainly rebellion that the artists in
this documentary went through, throughout their years of fame.
Narrative Structure
At the beginning it shows pictures being zoomed out on that were taken by the photographer being
interviewed. This gives a background of the photographer before he got further into his life, taking pictures
of bands and becoming good friends with them. It introduces the first band that they begin to talk about,
The Ramones.
In the middle of the documentary, it shows the different band’s fame and how they rebelled through the way
they dressed, and how they acted in public, etc.
At the end, it tells the audience how the bands resulted in breaking up.
Camera Work
The camera work used is just basic. They used close shots and mid-shots during the interviews and all other
footage was archive material being images.
3. Mise en Scene
The mise en scene in this documentary is quite simple. As most the footage was of pictures, it just leaves
the interviews. The interviews had simple backgrounds behind the people, they didn’t stand out so that the
audiences attention was completely on the person talking. Although, the backgrounds that were noticeable
were things that related to the theme of the documentary such as, recording studios.
Sound
In the documentary, there is a lot of non-diegetic music in the background. It’s music that’s
mainly by the bands being spoken about on the documentary, but also music that was released
at a similar time to theirs. There is no narration in this as they use the interviews to be the
voice in the background as they show the photography.
Editing
The editing done in this documentary are mostly simple transitions such as the moving and zooming in and
out of the photography.
Graphics
There are film scripts at the bottom of the documentary.
Archive Material
There is a lot of live footage through photography, and other photos of bands in the lives of fame. This
shows the audience how they lived their lives, and helps explain what the people being interviewed at
trying to say about the band as they can show examples.
