2. What is Amaranth (Red dye #2)?
• It is a dark red/purple substance that is found
in food as a food color and also used in color
cosmetics.
• Also used in plants
• Can be called FD&C Red No.2, Food Red 9,
or Acid Red 27

3. How Amaranth Is Used
• Amaranth is used in the dyes that are used
while embalming to give color to the skin.
• The dyes that are used are to give off a light
pink color to make the skin look like normal.

4. Health Effects
• May cause gas if swallowed
• Irritates the respiratory track
• May cause swelling

is used in the dyes we use in
embalming. We also need to know
how it works and the side effects it
has to the body.
