The document summarizes information about the 2000 Summer Olympics held in Sydney, Australia. It discusses the overall cost of the games, notable achievements and records set by athletes, the official mascots, and the methods used by the presentation group to verify the credibility of their sources. The group determined the sources were credible based on authority, currency, peer review, comparison, and corroboration. The presentation provided details on the costs of the Sydney games, standout performances by athletes like Marion Jones and Eric Moussambani, the platypus, echidna, and kookaburra mascots, and new Olympic records achieved in cycling and swimming.
2. Introduction
The purpose of the slideshow is to provide
information on the Olympic Games held at
various countries, the overall cost and
identify additional venues built by the hosting
country.
The presentation will also include information
on outstanding achievements by athletes, the
nation’s mascots and any new world records
set at the games. As a group we identified
numerous methods in verifying the credibility
of the sources used. Our methods used are;
Authority, Currency, Peer Reviewed,
Comparison and Corroboration.
Utilising all of these methods ensured that
the sources were accurate, up to date and
that the authors had the authority to write
such facts with credibility.

4. COST OF THE GAMES
In 2000, the Auditor-General of New South Wales reported that the Sydney Games cost A$6.6 billion, with a net cost to the
public between A$1.7 and A$2.4 billion. It has been estimated that the economic impact of the 2000 Olympics was that
A$2.1 billion shaved from public consumption. Economic growth was not stimulated and in the years after 2000, foreign
tourism to NSW grew by less than tourism to Australia as a whole. (McPhee, 2002)
5. Marion Jones, winner of three gold and two bronze medals for the United States, relinquished them in October 2007 after
confessing that she had taken tetrahydrogestrinone. “The IOC formally stripped Jones and her relay teammates of their 5 medals,
although her teammates were to be offered opportunity to present a case for retaining their medals, eventually being
reinstated”. (CBSnews 2008 & Wikipedia 2015)
Stand-out Achievements
6. “Moussambani won brief international fame at the 2000 Summer Olympics when he swam his heat of the 100 m freestyle in
1:52.72. His time was more than twice that of his faster competitors, and outside even the 200 m world record” (Lord 2000). Eric
set a new personal best and Equatoguinean national record. As of 2012 Moussambani is the coach of the national swimming
squad of Equatorial Guinea.
Stand-out Achievements
7. The official mascots chosen for the 2000 Summer Olympics were Syd the platypus, Millie the echidna, and Olly the kookaburra
and were designed by Matthew Hattan and Jozef Szekeres. (Olympic.org 2015)

14. Conclusion
The information provided is based up researched and reference information our group has assessed for
credibility and reliability using the ‘Checklist approach and Contextual approach’ (Metzger, 2007) A brief
overview of the checklist formed by our research group is below and our selection.
The checklist approach
1. Accuracy - Is the website free from errors? Can it be verified? Can other websites verify?
2. Authority - Author displayed? Name? Contact details? Authors Credibility?
3. Objective - purpose of the website, whether the information is fact or opinion, Authors goals? Invested
interest? Sponsored links?
4. Currency - Whether the information is current or dated?
5. Coverage - refers to the comprehensiveness of the information or depth
Contextual Approach to establishing credibility
1. Peer reviewed or assessed information - Journals, vetted by peers, university databases etc.
2. Corroboration - seeking more than on source to verify information’s accuracy and reliability via a
convergence of facts from a variety of sources.
3. Comparison - Comparing websites to others and offline resources .i.e. Newspapers, journals etc.
Our chosen group checklist
Authority, Currency, Peer Reviewed, Comparison and Corroboration to prove Accuracy
By using the above checklist our group was able to prove the sources to be reliable and credible.
