12. ESIGHT 3
Ivon Felis is enjoying the view of the San Francisco Bay. It might
not seem like a big deal,
except that Ivon is legally blind. I actually have a blind spot that
takes up 98% of my visual field.
and so I see shapes and shadows on the outside and I can't read
and I can't see distances.
When I was 7, I was hit by a car. It took a year for them to realize
that I had star guards which
is a child form a macular degeneration. Oh! It's got a leaf on the
inside. That is so cool.
I have to take a picture. A special video headset from E-Sight lets
Ivon see everything
from a close up of a cookie forturne, to a coffee menu on the
wall, to a distant bridge.
Mendok...sino. Ivon took these photos with the E-Sight headset
so we could see what
she sees. To be able to travel on my own, I can't believe that I can
get to an airport,
Go through customs, go through security, find my seat and to be
able to do that all
by myself without having to have someone hold my hand. What
it does is it
uses a video camera to capture what's going on infront of
someone in real time,
allows the user to control how that video is processed and then
through a series of
advanced optics and high resolution display sends that video to
the user
in a way that in many cases, overcomes the cause of their vision
loss.
It allows them to see very well again. Ivon first tried E-Sight
several years ago.
I remember putting them on and looking up and I saw my
husband who I had been married to
for 8 years and I had never seen before and my 2 month old son
whom we had just brought
home from the hospital. The company's latest headset called E-
Sight 3 is $10k.
It's lighter and sleeker than the previous 2 versions. The battery
can last up to 8-9 hours
a day, it has a 21.5 megapixel image sensor, wifi, bluetooth.
With this controller, Evon can adjust the image so it looks good to
her. Magnifying or
making the scene brighter is all at her finger tips. If we look
across all comers
regardless of their cause of vision loss, it works for 4 out of 5
people.
For Ivon, the E-Sight has given her the freedom to go about her
every day
life including working, reading to her kids without relying on
others.
I can golf with them. I've gone ziplining. But, I do play basketball
with my kids.
The only 2 cases were E-Sight is not recommended is for driving
and swimming.
I love when people come up and ask me what I'm wearing,
because it a door opener.
It allows me to talk about low vision and that there are solutions.
Hm...Today's oysters.

14. ORCAM MYEYES
Many of us take for granted that symbols and the written word
are used every day
for the exchange of information. So many people take their
vision for granted.
And we never pause to think what the world would be like
without it.
People who are visually impaired face significant challenges.
They are excluded
from information and face many difficult in interacting with
their environments comfortably.
Even in the 21st century, there is still a great need for assistive
technology for the visually disabled.
OrCam is an intuitive portable device with a small camera
mounted on eye glasses
that recognizes text and objects, and speaks to the wearer
through a discrete
bone conduction ear piece. Computer vision is a field of
computer science that
teaches computers to see. We are harnessing this technology to
help the 280 millionpeople in the world who experience a significant loss of vision.
Hi! My name is Devora Shaltiel. I have Degenerative Miopia as
well as Retinitis Pigmentosa.
OrCam has been such a great part of my life socially. I just
remember arriving at the restaurant
and my friend requested menus. I began to read what was on
the menu. My friendstopped and she was shocked. She asked are you reading that?.
Devora's eye sight has deteriorated rapidly over the past few
years.
It was such a liberating feeling. I didn't have to worry about my
friend being
concerned with my disability or taking her time to go over the
information with me.
It was just so wonderful and my friends was so excited. We
were able to continue our
conversation, we were able to talk freely without any focus on
my disability.
My name is Moshe Fischer. I am originally from Newark New
Jersey. Using the OrCam for
the first time, I was shocked by the technology in it. Now it
comes as almost
Second nature. It's like having a friend read to you. Mosche has
been legally blind
from childhood and has been using OrCam for a few months.
Reading the newspaper
has become a really relaxing experiense now. I'm able to
sitback, scan the newspaper
quickly, and read in a comfortable easy chair rather than sitting
at a table and
holding a magnifying glass. I've found it opened up new
possibilities for me
such as using a smart phone which I couldn't use before,
officially reading email
rather than having to go back home and use a large computer
screen, looking at store
windows and window shopping which I had never done before
in my life. I'm able to
experience and feel whats going on in the environment, which I
couldn't do before.
I had to pass by and let it go without really sensing what I was
seeing because I didn't
see it. All you have to do is point and by responding to this
simple gesture
the OrCam device understands what you want on it's own. It
can be personalized by
memorizing hunders of new objects that you teach it. At this
party every name is bold
It wasn't clear which stood taller, the corinthian columns at the
New York State Supreme
Court, or the towering figures of New York Society who mingled
benith them at the kickoff
to the twelth annual film festival on Tuesday night. I'm Lea. I'm
visually impaired.
Now I'm going to show you how the OrCam device changed my
life. With Or Cam I can find things easily.Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice. alpro vanilla soy milk.It looks like we have to go shopping!
Captain Cruch Cerial. Oh! It recognizes products. Now let's see
what's in it.
Ingredients: Corn flower, Sugar, Oat Flower, Brown Sugar,
Cocanut oil.Sounds good, I'll take it.Alpro bio soy milk. That's what I was looking for.Secret deodorant.$50 dollar, please. My visa. Sorry ma'am. The system is down.Oh...Ok. Fifty Dollars. Here you go. Thank you very much. Can I have these things delivered, please? Yeah Sure.Have a good day. Bye!Klayn Street. We're almost there.Let's see if she's already here. Rachael.
Hey love! Hey Rachael! I hope you haven't been waiting to
long. No, I just got here. Do you need help with the menu?
Not any more. Antipasti 56 a variety of roasted vegitables and
goat cheese witholive oil and balsamic vinagar. I think I'll take a salad.I think I'll get one too. So how are things with you and...Hold it...sorry, this is a private conversation.
Imagine your life with OrCam. Visit www.orcam.com or ask your

16. AIRA
Aira offers a personalized service for the blind and low vision
people to help them gain
greater mobility, independence, efficiency, and selfassurance.
Although Ben is
completely blind, he has confidenly learned how to navigate the
streets of San Diego
with the use of his cane. Though Ben manages quite well, there
are certain unexpected
situations where he can get into trouble. Fortunately, he is
wearing his Aira smart glasses.
and when he either senses he is on a terrain he is unfamilliar
with or his cane tells him
information that he still can't discern, he simply activates the
glasses with his finger
and instantly Cloe, his Aira agent sees what he is about to
confront and tells him how to
proceed. Cloe is a certified agent who's trained in aiding blind
people whenever they tap their Aira
smart glasses. Hi Ben, this is Cloe! She has a mission control
style dashboard where she
can see what Ben is looking at, where he is located on google
maps, and any
potential obstructions in his path. Hey Cloe, it's nice to hear
your voice.
It's good to hear your voice too Ben. How can I help you? I
need some help with my
directions. I'm meeting my friend Bob McArthy at La Hattas
restaurant for lunch
and my usual route is blocked, so could you help me get there
on time?
Sure Ben, but first can you help me get situated so I can make
sure you are in a safe spot?
Can you look around so I can get a thorough view of your
surroundings? Since Cloe
can now see exactly where Ben is by way of the video camera's
in his smart glasses
she can help Ben orient himself on exactly what is going on
around him. You're actually
pretty close. I think the fastest way to get there is by taking the
MTS. You can jump on the
train at the little Italy station which is on West Cedar Street and
take that to the convention center
stop. So turn back around and walk towards Pacific Highway.
And then
I'll be happy to give you some more information. Ok. Let's go
for it.
You will hear a ring tone like this(Bell rings) at 20 feet and 5 feet
from the intersection.
You're aproaching a really busy 4 way intersection. Pacific
Highway is 4 lanes wide
with 2 way traffic. The crosswalk signal box is on the right hand
side 2 feet from the intersection
of the two curbs. As soon as you cross onto Cedar Street, walk
about 50 feet to thetrain stop. There is a bench for you if you want to rest.
By the way, there is a signage on the train that is advertising
ComiCon starting next
weekend at the convention center. That might be fun to go to.
You will take the greenline to the convention center stop and get off.
Ican see that the green line is approaching. The entrance is
about 6 feet from youat 2:00.There is an open seat on the left.Cloe can see Ben's progress on google maps on the screen. The train is approaching your stop.
You are on the North South sidewalk. Turn right and walk 200
feet and take a left
on 4th Avenue. The restaurant is a few minutes away. Thanks
Cloe.
Cloe click on the social tab on Ben's profile and can see that he
loves seafood.
The agent dashboard then pops up a Yelp menu from the Las
Hattas Cafe.
From your profile Ben, I see that you love seafood. Las Hattas
signiature dish is
Enchilada del Mar wrapped in a hand made crepe with broiled
lobster and shrimp.
Sounds delicious. Thank you Cloe. The restaurant entrance is at
10:00.
There is a hostess on the patio ready to greet you. Ben, I see
Bob sitting outside
at a table about 15 feet strait ahead. Cloe is able to identify Bob
because of his facebookpicture that appears on her dashboard.Hey Ben! Bob! How are you?
(laughter) Good to see you. Ok. Thank you Cloe, I can take it
from here.Any time Ben. I'm just one click away.
At the end of each the user hears an Aira charm that signifies
the session is completed.
Ben was so pleased by Cloe's attentive service, that he
immediately tapped his Airaglasses and gave her a 5 star rating.
