Importanceof reading:
Jeremiah – introductionslide
‘The more that you read, the more things youwill know. The more you learn,
the more places you’ll go.’
Dr. Seuss wrotethis inspiring quote in his famous children’s book, I Can Read With
My Eyes Shut.
Reading is a fun way to learn new things. Itopens a window into another world,
whether fantasy or reality. Itdevelops your brain and helps you become
knowledgeable in various subjects. Notonly does it help you become a better
student, but it makes you a better person becauseyou will learn life lessons from
characters you will meet inside the pages of a book.
Marifer
In addition…
Books contain valuable information and powerfulideas that can help children
become better individuals. An inspiring book passagecan influence them to aspire
for greater things and to be whomthey want to be. This is the reason why parents
and educators encouragechildren to develop excellent reading skills. Not only is it
essential for survivalin the school environment, but in everyday life as well.
The importance of reading for children cannot be underestimated. Reading for
pleasurecan benefit a child’s education, social and cognitive development, well-
being, and mental health.
Jeremiah – meron na to
Reading is indeed essential, and as a final requirement in our elective subjectseel
132, weconducted a remedial reading activity for the selected pupils of
DMMMSU, ELS. In this activity, we handled a kindergarten pupil. With this
presentation, please lean us your attention as we narratethe journey of Zyrene
Margareth with this activity full of learning, enjoyment, and excitement.
Marifer
We started the activity with a diagnostic session; for us, it is the mostimportant
session for us tutors since it is our opportunity to check and assess our tutee's
reading capacity and reading experiences. In addition, it is also our chance to
advertiseourselves to our tutee in a manner that we could catch her attention to
gain more excitement for the reading sessions wewill conduct.
Jeremiah – another slide
Before that, we formulate two main objectives for this activity; the firstis to
motivate our tutee to want to read so she will practice reading independently
and, thus, become a fluent reader. And we believe that happens when children
enjoy reading. As our primary plan, webased our strategy on what fast-food
chains do for hamburgers? They ADVERTISE!And weadvertise by reading great
stories and poems to our tutee. Our second objective is to help the child find the
tools sheneeds to develop her reading skills. Having access to information
through the printed word is an absolute necessity. Knowledgeis power, and
books arefull of it. But reading is more than justa practical tool. Through books,
we can enrich our minds; we can also relax and enjoy someprecious leisure
moments. We also plan to integrate technology as one of the tools that we could
associatewith the reading process.
Marifer –another slide
And to make our objectives more effective and organized, we created a literacy
plan for this activity. This is a 10-day literacy plan or a 30-minutesession per day
within ten days. Theprogram includes our daily objective, the materials we need,
activities, assessment, and remarks for every session. This helps us in conducting
the entire activity. Itserves as our daily guide, a monitoring tool, and a reliable
record for the whole of the activity.
For the entire activity, we’vefocused on the three aspects of learning processes
that we associated with the reading activity, these areletters and word
recognition, vocabulary activities, and listening comprehension. Wealso
introduce our tutee to sentences and phrases reading in the latter sessions.
Jeremiah – another slide
We used the Dolch list for kindergarten for word recognition, which contains pre-
primer and primer words. Our goalwith this activity is to have10 words fromthe
list to introduceto our tutee per session. This learning objective helps us identify
the letters that our tutee struggles to read or pronounce. Since the words are
alphabetically arranged, wecould quickly identify the problems.
After the activity, we found out that our tutee could already read most of the
words fromthe list. However, wenoted some issues in this partof the learning
process, such as the tutee struggles to pronouncethe letter ‘R’ in somewords; we
also observed that shereads words with a longer tone than the normal, and she
also struggles in identifying the phonics of somevowel sounds.
For the solution, we allotted time to have an extra discussion to resolvethe issues
we mentioned earlier; a separate lesson for the proper pronunciation of ‘R’ for
example
.
In the last sessions of the reading activity, we try to assess our tutee’s capacity to
read somecombination of words through reading phrases and shortsentences.
Surprisingly, shecould already read the given phrases and sentences but in a slow
manner.
Overall, this learning objective helps us formulate strategies to help our tutee
improveher pronunciation, speed, and reading tone.
Marifer –another slide
For the vocabulary partof the learning process, our goalis to introduce our tutee
to some ways to help her comprehend a reading material beforereading or
listening to it. With that, our primary strategy is to usesome images that have
associated with the reading material in the lesson. By the use of images, we
believe that our tutee could have prior ideas upon encountering the reading
material.
With this strategy, we observed that our tutee shows excitement and interest in
the reading material that we will discuss. Wealso noted that it serves a huge part
in the comprehension process of our tutee to the reading material.
Jeremiah – another slide
For reading and listening comprehension, our goal is to help our tutee to have an
appropriatestrategy for understanding a material. In this part, wefound that the
use of audiovisualpresentation provides a huge help in the comprehension of our
tutee to the material. Therefore, another strategy we did was to ask
comprehension questions during and after the presentation of the material.
For the remarks, wewould like to commend our tutee for her outstanding
performanceon this partof the learning process. Itis evident that audiovisual
presentation plays a big role in the comprehension styleof children nowadays.
