IV. PROCEDURES
A. Review previous lesson or
presenting the new lesson
To begin this learning session, the teacher will ask the learners to
watch a short, animated video entitled “A Whale’s Tale.”

Here are some screenshots from the video:
2. B. Establishing a purpose for the
lesson
After watching the short, animated video, the learners will answer the
following questions:
Who are the characters in the video?
The whale and other sea creatures, the boy and his father,
and the fishermen
What problem is presented in the video?
Plastic pollution in the sea
What are the possible causes of this problem?
Of all the plastic we use, 40% is used just once. Every year we
use several billion items such as bags, bottles, trays, and food
packaging. Supermarkets are full of it. Some people are
careless with packaging and leave it behind as litter. But there
are also places where people can’t do otherwise because
there is no waste collection system. It is without a doubt that
even if most people do their best, much of that single-use
plastic enters the environment (including the sea), being one
of the biggest cause of plastic pollution.
What are the possible effects of this problem?
Plastic pollution in the ocean has a devastating impact on
marine life and ecosystems. Marine animals are at risk when
they come into contact with or ingest them. Dangers of plastic
pollution include suffocation, entanglement, laceration,
infections and internal injuries.
How did the characters in the video resolve the problem?
The whale helped the smaller sea creatures who are trapped
in plastic waste. On land the young boy sought support to
clear the sea in his area. Fishermen came to his aid and many
boats start to help clear the plastic from the sea.
As a Fifth-Grade learner, how can you save sea creatures
and other living things around us against the dangers of
improper waste management?
Answers may vary
C. Presenting examples/instances
of the new lesson
After eliciting the learners’ responses to the questions, the teacher will
present the new lesson and objectives for the day.
3. “Solid waste management remains a major challenge in the Philippines
especially in urban areas. Improper wastes disposal, inefficient wastes
collection and lack of disposal facilities are among the dominant
concerns in the country’s solid waste management. Unless these are
addressed, the waste generated from various sources will continually lead
to health hazards and serious environmental impacts such as ground and
surface water contamination, flooding, air pollution and the spread of
diseases.
One of the most helpful concepts in solid waste management is following
the rule of the five R’s (5R’s).”
D. Discussing new concepts and
practicing new skills #1
The teacher will present the meaning of 5 R’s in waste management.
E. Discussing new concepts and
practicing new skills #2
The teacher will discuss in detail each of the of the 5 R’s in waste
management.
4.
5. F. Developing mastery To master the lesson for the day, the learners will accomplish the
following activities.
DIRECTIONS: Complete the graphic organizer on the activity sheet
provided by the teacher by simply writing each of the words
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, RECOVER, and REPAIR below each
description.
DIRECTIONS: Read the situations. Identify the proper techniques
to minimize waste using the 5Rs.Write REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE,
REPAIR and RECOVER.
1. Mrs. Flores is leading a group of women who make flowers out of
candy wrappers and used plastics. (RECYCLE)
2. Laarni decides to give her small dresses to her cousins. (REUSE)
3. Eliza refuses to buy a new bag because she has three unused new
bags. (REDUCE)
4. Chito cut his long pants with holes and made it into short pants.

10. Instead of throwing away all the soft drink cans he bought, Dennis
used them as pots for his plants. (RECYCLE)
DIRECTIONS: Write the number of each sentence under the
appropriate column as to reduce, reuse, recycle, repair, and recover.
DIRECTIONS: Answer the crossword puzzle below. Use the clues
given for you to be able to write the correct word for each item.
G. Finding practical applications of
concepts and skills in daily living
The teacher will ask the learners to work in groups in answering the
following activities.
