For some years Mott MacDonald has been providing expertise to the Nepal
Government Ministry of Water Resources Department of Irrigation in order to
improve conditions for people in the Rajapur region.
A significant part of the irrigation project is a crossing of Geruwa River at
Kothiyaghat.
The Geruwa River flows gently and is 150m wide for much of the year. During
the rainy season however it floods, and both its volume and its speed of flow
increase unpredictably, sometimes by an order of magnitude. A permanent bridge
able to withstand the floods would be prohibitively expensive. It was therefore
requested that the crossing should consist of a pontoon bridge which could be
removed each year before the floods come and replaced when the river returns to
normal.
In addition to providing the expertise for feasibility studies, a design-and-
construct contract for this pontoon bridge and its associated works was developed.
Advice was also provided during the award of contract. The contractor is was
responsible for developing construction and fabrication items of the design, which
was checked and approved for construction.
