This portfolio belongs to Jason Wang, an industrial design student. It contains summaries of three projects:
1. Bubble Boba - A redesign of bubble tea presented in edible spheres to reduce waste. Prototypes included plates to hold different numbers of "bubbles".
2. Drip - A humidifier designed through emphasizing form to look like a water drop. It illuminates and controls humidity through an app.
3. Rinse-Box - A rinser for juicing jars designed through research on pain points of cleaning. A prototype uses water pressure and a filter to quickly clean jars.

5. BUBBLE
BOBA
Studio Project - 4 weeks
Bubble Boba was a four-week design
project in my studio 1 class
This project aimed to design utensils for
a dish; I took it further and contribute my
design to the molecular gastronomya new experience to enjoy boba milk tea
02
6. “Boba Milk Tea, the lovely drink from Taiwan,
is my favorite drink of all time.”
7. Design Goals
to redesign bubble milk tea
and to serve the drink with a more interesting presentation
Special
to present boba milk tea in a special way
Fun
to have fun by enjoying the milk tea
Eco-friendly
reduces wastes, such as straws and plastic cups
Gastronomy
contribute to the field of gastronomy
Beauty
to create a beautiful narrative which correspond with the food
9. redesign the food
think about a new way to present boba milk tea
Bubble milk tea will be contained in an
edible and transparent membrane;
This presentation reshapes bubble milk tea into an actual
bubble.
It not only creates visual interest and experience,
but may also reduces the plastic waste.
inspired from bubbles,
and the ooho sphere by skipping rocks lab
10. Sketches & Process
designing the utensils for the bubble boba
Bowls and cups feel more like to serve to go
feels like cheap food, such as popcorn
destroys the mood
Plates deliver the bubbles in a more genuine way
serving less bubbles in quantity
11. Prototype 1
a plate that holds up to 5 bubble bobas
optimal serving size for a party ups to 5
each bubble makes people preciously
appreciate each and every drop
adds visual interest by creating a ripple-like texture
the dent of the texture also catches excessive liquids
of the bubbles on to the plate
inspires by ripple-like texture
12. cups for syrup flavoring
dent to catch excessive liquid
on the plate
five bubble bobas
Prototype 1
This is prototype of an oval plate with a
ripple-like texture.
The five bubbles on the plate create a
genuine and precious value to the food.
It will be served on the table along with
three choices of syrup, such as maple,
honey... etc.
user scenario
13. Redesign
distracting to the subject
rigid and geometric
dull form
From building sketch models and feedbacks,
Prototype 1 is on the right direction,
but the form and composition do not portray
the poetic feeling and narrative successfully
.
14. Direction 2: Organic Leafs
sketching an organic form for the plate
bubbles sit gently on the plate like water drops on a leaf an idea of using syrup for more flavors
moderate serving size: approximately 6 to 10 bubbles
15. User Testing
reviews using a sketch model
from both the server and the served
the plate looks poetic but is pretty difficult to hold and serve
Waiter (trying to serve the drink as if its in a restaurant)
too organic and not ergonomic to
the bubbles falls off easily when I try to serve
Diner (drinks given to the diners who never seen this before)
the form looks beautiful but the other side looks less interesting
the syrup option maybe redundant and distracting
the size of the bubble is okay for adults but too big for children
16. last unsuccessful attempt on the syrup
back to the narrative of water drops on a leaf
the narrative of bubbles on water suitable in serving less in quantity
Final directions
two plates for serving less and serving more
more in quantitypetiole as an ergonomic handle
19. a fun and eco-friendly design
of the modern molecular gastronomy

20. Drip
the humidifier of water, light, and earth
studio project - 6 weeks
a project with reversing the traditional design
process and emphasizing in the form of
expression but also maintaining the level of
cleanness and simplicity
03
22. Experiment
sketch and idealizing
form concepts
Ideate
develop forms through
sculpting
Reversing the Design Process
The Traditional Way
we design through the process of research, ideate, experiment, and design
The Reverse
Research
identify the product
Design
integrate function
into the form
Why change the process
while designers design for better tomorrow,
not only young designers but also many existing products on the market
tend to fail frequently to design a quality form to hold the concept.
There is nothing wrong with the traditional design process,
the purpose of this exercise is to start with designing the form;
thereby, putting more details and attitude in to the design itself.
24. Sculpting
to sculpt according to the mood board
and practice expressing the form
a selected driving word for the sculpture: water drop
capturing a progression of a drop
focus: beauty and simplicity
with
most of the initial practices are unsuccessful,
for it being too ornamental...
starting to reduce, reduce, and reduce
25. Sketching
develop details further with pen and paper
It is very often to ran out of ideas
after sculpting 50+ sculptures
Therefore, I used a few strategy to push for my concepts...
• what if my object were alive, what would it do
• what if one part of my design become a elemental shape
• what if I removed one detail form the shape, would I gain/lose something
• what if my object were alive, what would I do
• what if I made my shape (a)symmetrical
starting with sphere & ellipsoid
26. maintaining curvature continuity with an off centered tip
imagine the form to be alive and exploring functionality
chosen form to develop
develop detail and refine form
according to each functionality direction
27. Direction
finalizing direction to design a humidifier
Throughout sketches and design thinking,
the humidifier concept provides best visualization of the form
while making the form into a speaker, a salt box, or a container
creates a notion of forcing the form to become that product
a balanced 2nd read
while not being too ornamental
a round, continuous surface
demonstrates precision as the 1st read
28. Research
to research on the market preference
and pain points of humidifiers
traditional humidifiers on the market.
100 surveys from random 100 people
research shows that the pain points are...
form design
water tank capacity
“I often use my humidifier,
but it is not something I leave it on the table on the time;
I’d put it else where when I have a guest coming over to visit.”
“I would love to buy a humidifier,
but most humidifiers on the market looks ugly and breakable”
only 8 people owns a humidifier
It shows that
31 people say they would want a humidifier
“My humidifier needs to be refill after a 10-hour run time,
which it means that I need to refill the water everyday.”
user experience
“I would wish my humidifier have a scheduler function
to operate accordingly to plan”
durability
30 surveys from 30 humidifier owners
29. Design Goals
the humidifier will be designed like a work of art,
which illuminates on a table or nightstand; its beauty and quality
is what make this humidifier distinctive and unique on the market
Quality
design with quality craftsmanship to show off the form
Special
design a simple and clean form yet special
Beauty
create a beautiful design form with thoughtful details
Illumination
illuminate to serve a purpose like a mood lamp

Drop
People loses controllers every time;
therefore, control the humidifier through your phone
customizable lighting set up the schedule
Target Age Group Market: 18 ~ 50,
who are heavily mobile phone users
31. Concept 1, use a button to turn on the humidifier
Cons: button appears at a angle difficult to press
Pros: correspond fine with the form
Manual Activation
to manual turn on and off of the humidifier
Concept 2, use a leg beneath the humidifier as a button
The form provides a comfortable curvature
for the hand to palm the surface
a leg will be engineered as a button to turn on the lights
when force was applied on the top
a button leg
a fixed cable in the back
32. The CMF Story
Build with white glass,
the bulb sits on a white ceramic base
to create an impression of simplicity, purity, and illumination
The concept is that water and light is the foundation of life.
The light shines on top of the ceramic, an earthen material
while it is humidifying the air.
This humidifier embraces the representation of water, light, and earth; The form design, the
CNF, and the interaction of this lamp is what make this design special and beautiful.

34. Rinse-Box studio project - 6 weeks
a user centric project that requires heavy
research and focuses on the biggest pain
point of juicing activity: the cleaning processa rinser for the jars and cups
04
35. Research
to discover the users’ feedback and pain points
of the juicing activity
3 interviews & 30 surveys
research shows that the pain points are...
cleaning process
Alex Daniel Kavi
preparing ingredients
dealing with loudness
storaging the juicer
“I like to drink juice,
since the ingredients are in my fridge,
I am fine with preparing them
but to clean the jar after I juice is so tiring.
I am forced to clean immediately after I juice and this frustrates me...”
Many of the respondents of the survey do not have a consistent juicing routine or no longer
juices anymore because cleaning after they juice frustrates them
