2. Market Research – Content
After seeing the survey results from the audience, I decided to start my market research on
documentaries and print posters about growing up and the identity of the Northeast. In this
PowerPoint it will be :
• Market Research – Documentary Research
• Documentary – Sunderland Till I die
• Podcast – Everyone Dies in Sunderland
• Growing up white & Working – Britains Forgotten
• Market Research – Art Pieces Research
• Yulla Schulster
• Richard O'Neil
3. Market Research –
Documentary Research
I wanted to research already existing documentaries based on Sunderland and
the Northeast to see what type of documentary genres I should and should not
follow but also to give me more ideas of what the documentary should be about.
4. Sunderland Till I Die
Sunderland Till I Die is a popular Netflix documentary based on the Football club based in Sunderland. It is
the only the main regional. The Documentary shows how the new manager of Sunderland Afc is trying to
bring the club up in the league and show the fans of Sunderland how their club is ran on a daily basis. It is a
observational, participation style of documentary as they do many interviews and have many voice overs to
engage the audience members.
The Documentary really shows the club spirits and how they want to really include the fans with the club
itself, it is a very heartfelt documentary as it shows the true Sunderland football club community and how
they are really supportive of the players on the pitch. With the heartfelt bits of the documentary it also shows
the hard choices from the business side of things and how they could have the biggest impact on the clubs.
They have been able to really show through the camera movements and the music how the players and the
managers are feeling about the club and the matches, this is really an amazing way to show how they truly
feel and really makes the audience members as if they are there and having the conversations with the
managers.
5. Everyone Dies in Sunderland
Everyone dies in Sunderland is a Podcast about true crime in the Northeast of England and three people
share these stories along side their own experiences about growing up in the Northeast. This gives me a
great insight of what it was really like in these type of areas and how I would be able to address the
difference of experience as youth.
Here is the description :
Everyone Dies In Sunderland is a podcast about growing up terrified in the eighties and nineties. Ah, the
good old days. People left their front doors unlocked. Children played out in the street. Everyone got burgled.
Children got murdered, like, most days. Then there was Mad-Cow Disease and the Animals of Farthing
Wood. It was a truly terrifying time to be a child. And those children are adults now. Adults with children and
mortgages and Sense Machines and jobs with actual responsibilities. And three of them have started a
podcast where they laugh nihilistically at their own childhood trauma. Each week John, Gareth and Claire
travel back to a year of their childhoods in North East England.
In the most episodes of the podcast they talk how different of their growing up was very different from each
other as they all grew up in different cities such as Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham. With the podcast
they are really able to capture the true facts and life of growing up in these cities and how different it is to
todays youth experiences.
6. Growing up white & Working – Britain's
Forgotten Man
BBC Three created a documentary series back in 2018 to show the day-
to-day life of people of the working class. In the documentary it shows
how the living conditions for people are really and want to show how the
youth also behaves in today's society.
It many different types of documentaries types such as they show
expository, observational and reflective. They really try and show the real
truth of growing up in the working class and how hard they work to live
rather than survive.
This documentary really shows me instead of having intreviews sitting
down in a blank room, have them outside or a room that reflective
their generation or up bringing in order to connect them more to the
audience as it gives them something they can relate to.
7. Market Research – Art
Pieces Research
I wanted to see other people digital art pieces based on the Northeast or what
type of products they created based on their own region. This would be able to
give me different ideas and inspiration to use for my own digital art pieces.
8. Yulla Schuster – Digital Artist
Yulla Schuster is a German artist who is self-taught herself how to draw and paint. She
has a very particular interest in landscape and wildlife, She has drawn many different
landscapes and wildlife from all around the global such as the US, Australia, Japan
and England.
She creates original portraits, landscapes, animals and still life. She says the more
she works the more she is able to enjoy painting and gain more confidence in her own
ability to express what is in her mind, this gives a beautiful message as she shows
express her feeling through her artworks and how she sees them.
I have looked at her work as her digital artwork of London really caught my eye how
she has been able to manipulate so many layers in order to create a faded and blurred
looked to big ben.
This inspires me to do something similar to my digital artwork and create a piece which
includes the iconic Sunderland bridge.
9. Richard O'Neil – Digital Artist
Richard O'Neil is a digital artist born in Bradford UK; he is a digital artist
specializing in contemporary travel art. He is inspired by the classic twentieth
century travel art and the beautiful scenery around his home countryside of
Yorkshire and beyond.
He speaks about how he has a strong sense of place is extremely important to
his work and he is able to give a human element that compliments the digital art
style.
His artwork for the Wearmouth bridge, really intrigues me as the picture is so
clear and gives off the effect as someone has hand drawn it but it also clearly
captures every single little detail to the tress that surrounded the bridge at the
bottom. This gives me the idea of creating this type of style for my poster as it
while clearly show an iconic budlings in the Northeast but also show it clearly.
I really like his work as it is very clear where it is placed but it is so neat and tidy
while showing what type of place it is, it creates an effect as if you guess if
someone has drawn it by hand or has someone created it digitally.
