2. What does it mean by Unified Traffic?
Unified means united, integrated or
a whole.
Unified traffic management
scheme will be implemented in
all major thoroughfares of metro
cities in anticipation of worsened
traffic.
3. National Urban Transport Policy(NUTP),
2006 envisages setting up of Unified
Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA)
in all million plus cities,
To facilitate coordinated planning and
implementation of urban transport
programs , projects and integrated
management of urban transport
systems.
4. Unified transport authority was meant
to plan, construct, operate and maintain
its rail and road networks.
The Government passed an order to
set up a committee that figures out the
modalities of a Unified Metropolitan
Transport Authority (UMTA).

5. “The UMTA was initially an advisory
committee, coordinating between the Mass
Rapid Transit System, Metro Rail and the
MTC.”
6. The city was all set to have a unified transport
authority that had planned, construct, operate
and maintain its rail and road networks.
The Government passed an order on to set up
a committee that will figure out the modalities
of a Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority
(UMTA). The committee, was headed by vice-
chairperson, Chennai Metropolitan
Development Authority, consist of officials
from the Highways Department, Railways,
CMDA and Metropolitan Transport
Corporation.
7. UMTS Hyderabad
Unified Metropolitan Transport authority
constituted ensures effective implementation and
coordination of various traffic and transportation
measures undertaken by functional departments
and Public agencies in Hyderabad.
It may co-opt experts or subgroups for specific
traffic and transportation issues undertaken by
various Departments.
8. Functions of Unified Metropolitan
Transport authority
To overseas implementation of various traffic and
transportation measures undertaken by various
agencies in the region.
To ensure efficient public transport system are in
place in metropolitan region.
To ensure coordination and implementation of
various effective transportation measures
undertaken by various departments.
9. To promote and monitor key/major traffic and
transportation projects
To deliberate and recommend effective transport
strategies for Metropolitan region.
To integrate and consolidate all the action plans of
various departments and agencies & implement
them.
To give directions to agencies involved in the
implementation of traffic and transportation policies
and measures i.e shifting of utilities and services.
10. Processing of funds for implementation of proposals.
Integrating various routes of public transport and
issues of combining ticketing , feeder services.
Approval of all traffic and transportation
proposals/projects from any agency in the
metropolitan region.
To direct the subvention of funds from various
departments and agencies of the State Govt. for
implementation traffic plans.
11. The Technical support staff and secretarial
assistance to the Unified Metropolitan Transport
Authority shall be provided by the Hyderabad
Metropolitan Development Authority.
It should build a detailed database necessary
traffic & transportation surveys to update its
database and also make it available for various
studies and to public.
12. This database would help in monitoring and
understanding the various traffic and transportation
needs in Hyderabad Metropolitan region.
It should act as center for technology transfer and
also guide the local authorities for all technical
inputs/plans in the field of traffic and transportation.
13. An escrow account shall be maintained in
Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority in
which 0.25% of estimated cost of all projects of
Traffic and transportation costs undertaken by
various Departments/ functional agencies shall
be deposited in this account and 0.25% of
development authority and greater Hyderabad
Municipal corporation and other urban local
bodies shall be annually credited to this account.
