Paper was first invented in China around 105 A.D., and was brought to Japan by monks in the sixth century. Handmade paper was a luxury item only available to a few, and paper folding in ancient Japan was strictly for ceremonial purposes, often religious in nature.
many studies assert that origami was invented by the Japanese about a thousand years ago, but its roots may well be in China. It is also highly probable that the process of folding was applied to other materials before paper was invented, so the origins of recreational folding may lie with cloth or leather.
It is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, which started in the 17th century AD and was popularized internationally in the mid-1900s. It eventually evolved into a modern art form.
Paper folding had already become a significant aspect of Japanese ceremonies by the Heian period(794- 1185) in Japanese history.
Flowers, animals, birds, fish, geometric shapes and dolls are the common models used in Japanese Origami
“Honourable Lord Crane” and it wings carried souls up to heaven.
An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane. They believe that a crane is a mythical or holy creature and is said to live for a thousand years.
The origami crane’s popularity is largely due to a children’s book written by author Eleanor Coerr called “Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes.”
The story follows a Japanese girl name Sadako who was 2 years old when the United States bombed Japan at the end of World War II. Due to the fall-out from the bombs Sadako developed leukaemia.
