• To share the experience of Bournemouth
University (BU) and Thomas Hardye School
working in partnership to promote access to
HE
• To share how an awareness of equality and
diversity helps disabled students to access
HE

How does ED and
outreach work at TH?
• SEN is called Education Extra
• Ensures all staff have information about student
needs
• Delivers development on a range of
disabilities/needs
• All students follow a mainstream curriculum
• Speech and Language/Physical Needs base at
the School
• Work with all Schools in the DASP partnership

How did we start working
together?
• Cold calling!
• No double glazing was offered…
• Opportunity to provide information, advice and
guidance concerning disabled students
• Led to access to students
• Opportunity to talk to small group of disabled
students/parents
• 6th
form information evening students/parents

What impact has the
work had?
• Joe is in a work placement and due to return
to Bournemouth next year to finish his law
degree
• Emma complete Nursing degree
• Kay complete BA and is planning to
undertake an MA
• Henry alive and well in Cardiff… (without his
TA support!)

• Talk about student funding
• Opportunities to respond to specific
questions
• Provide the BU student voice to over 900
students!

The title of the project was ‘Seen but seldom heard’ (Using participatory creative methods to explore lived experiences of disability and aspiration amongst 14-19 year olds). A launch event was held at the University on 21 September 2012.
