Performance Task 1
Writing a Tour Material
Do you feel proud of your identity as a Filipino? Would you like it if
people from other countries come to visit, see, and know more about our
country? If it was up to you, how would you introduce the Philippines
to them? Try writing a tourism flyer that will exhibit the beauty of the
Philippines through the following guide:
I. Prewrite
Start your writing by jotting down notes that will form your flyer’s
outline. Research online or ask for reference materials from your
local tourism office about sample tourism flyers you can study. You
may also watch travel videos pertaining to different parts of our
country online so you can describe the places better.
II. Draft
Using your plan as guide, write down the contents of your flyer.
Add in details you think will be of interest to the potential tourist.
Mention exact locations as well.
III. Revise
Read what you have written so far. Answer the questions below to
check and improve your draft:
	 1. Does my draft include accurate and complete details?
	2. Is my draft free from any grammar errors?
	3. Is my draft free from spelling, punctuation, capitalization,
			 and indentation errors?
Week
1
3
IV. Edit
Correct all the errors. Ideally, you should write all the corrections
at the margin of your paper. Be sure to reread your work as well.
V. Write the Final Draft
When writing the final draft, make sure that all the errors you saw
earlier are now corrected. Reread everything and check details
such as capitalization and indentation. Check the example below
for reference.
VI. Share
Read your work to your family. Ask them for their thoughts on it so
that you can make improvements based on their comments.
The Philippines is a beautiful country composed of 7600
islands. It is home to some of the most breathtaking sceneries not
only in Asia but in the whole world. With the South China Sea on
the west and the Pacific Ocean on the east, it is no wonder that
the country has many nice beaches. Here, one can simply relax and
feel the heat of the sun and the soothing waves of the ocean. The
Philippines also has majestic mountains, valleys, hills, and plains one
can visit. Among the must-see spots in the country are: the Mayon
Volcano (known for its perfect cone shape) of Bicol; the beautiful
Banaue Rice Terraces of Ifugao Province; the awesome Underground
River of Palawan; the breathtaking Taal Volcano and Lake of Batangas;
and many more.
What are you waiting for? Come experience the island
treasures of the Philippines. You surely won’t be disappointed!

Performance Task 2
Relics and Artifacts
Inspecting objects from the past can tell us many things. A simple
weapon used by our ancestors might give us a hint of how they fought
to protect themselves or what animals they hunted to eat. By studying
these, we are able to get a glimpse of how they lived. These old
objects can either be artifacts or relics. Artifacts were objects made by
humans, perhaps a weapon or tool. Meanwhile, relics are remains of
something from the past, such as ruins.
Look for photos of the following:
1. Leta-Leta Jarlet with Yawning Mouth
2. Tabon Skull Cap
3. Laguna Copper Plate
4. Fossilized Shells (Ammonites)
Which are artifacts? Which are relics? What do they tell about the
past?
A. Choose a partner and discuss the objects above. Based on the
definition for artifacts and relics given, classify to which they
belong. Research as well on what these objects are.
B. Have a discussion with the same partner about how the past
affects the present. How can something from the past have
any effect on what we know today? Write a short essay that
combines both your opinions on the matter.

Performance Task 3
Writing a Dialogue
A dialogue is a written conversation between two or more characters.
It lets the readers know what the characters are talking about.
Likewise, it can show what a character is like and how he or she
interacts with others.
I.	Prewrite
Think about a dialogue that two characters could have. It
could just be them talking casually or perhaps there is a conflict
that needs to be solved. The most important thing is for the reader
to get a glimpse of what the character thinks and feels. Use the
sample graphic organizer below to put down your ideas.
Characters
• Rick
• Rick’s friends, Emma
and Gabby
Setting
• One Saturday morning
• At Rick’s house
Problem
Rick cannot play outside because he has to look after his baby
sister.
Solution
Emma and Gabby simply stay at their house and play there.
II. Write the First Draft
Use your graphic organizer as basis for your first draft. Vary your
sentence patterns and make your dialogue sound natural. Use
punctuation marks correctly as well.
Week
4
6
III.	Revise
Read your draft and see how you can still improve it. Answer
the questions below to check and improve your draft:
1. Does my dialogue show how the characters feel?
2. Did I use a variety of sentence patterns?
3. Did I use quotation marks and other punctuation marks cor-
rectly?
4. Did I use proper capitalization?
5. Are the words spelled correctly?
IV. Edit and Write the Final Draft
Check your work for errors. You may exchange work with a
partner to get his or her opinions on the matter. Then, write the
final draft. See the sample below.
One Saturday morning, Emma and Gabby went to the house of their
good friend Rick.
“Let’s go play outside, Rick!” called Emma.
Rick sighed. “Sorry, I can’t play outside right now.”
	 “Why not?” Gabby asked.
“My parents went to buy groceries and I have to look after my little
sister,” Rick said. Emma and Gabby both noticed that their friend was sad.
“That’s not a problem! We don’t have to go outside,” Gabby said.
“Yeah! We can just play here until your parents come back,” Emma
seconded.
“Thank you both. Now all four of us, including my baby sister, can play
and have fun!” Rick said with a smile.
V.	Share
Read your dialogue to your family and ask them for their
thoughts on it.

Performance Task 4
Next Question, Please
Conducting an interview is a great way to get information that you
need from a key person or something more knowledgeable in the
matter you are interested in. However, if not done properly, you may
end up not getting the information that you want or worse, may make
the interviewee feel confused or even annoyed.
In this activity, you will demonstrate your interview skills by
partnering up with a family member. Consider choosing from the
following scenarios that you and your partner (in his or her turn) can
perform:
• A pupil interviewing a government official on what he or she has
done for the community
• A news anchor interviewing a pupil who won an international
competition among young inventors
• An aspiring entrepreneur interviewing an owner of a small business
on how to get started
You may also come up with a different scenario. Make sure to do
your research so you can fulfill your role well. Your performance will be
evaluated through the following rubrics:
Rubric on preparing for an interview
CRITeria Yes No
I did some research about the interviewee and details about the topic of
the interview.
I finalized my script and the questions.
I identified and prepared the needed materials such as video camera,
voice recorder, cell phone, notebook, and/or pen.
I set up all the materials needed before the interviewee arrives.

to fulfill the purpose of the interview.
I asked effective follow-up questions when answers are
inadequate or unclear.
My questions are well-thought-out, edited, and organized.
Delivery
I used proper language and spoke clearly and distinctly with a
determined confidence all the time.
I mispronounced no words and sounded natural.
I avoided distracting expressions such as “um,”“uh,”“like that,”
etc.
Appearance and Poise
I look prepared and confident.
I maintained good posture and eye contact with the interviewee.
I did not display any distracting mannerisms like flipping my hair
back, playing with pen, etc.
Attentiveness and Politeness
I listened carefully to the interviewee.
I did not hurry the interviewee in answering the questions.
I waited for the interviewee to finish answering the question
before asking for clarification.
I thanked the interviewee for his/her willingness to be
interviewed.

Performance Task 5
Actions Speak Louder than Words
There are emotions that one can
convey even without putting them
into words. This is because feelings
can sometimes be too big for words
and the only way for us to make
the other person feel it is through actions. For example, many of us
express our gratitude to loved ones through actions that we know
they would appreciate. Instead of telling your parents “thank you” for
sending you to school, perhaps you simply work hard on your studies
so that they can see how much you value their gift of education.
Likewise, more than just saying “thanks” to a friend for being there for
you, maybe you can also comfort him or her when he or she is the one
facing problems.
The following activities will explore how actions can indeed speak
louder than words.
A. Collect photos of a loved one you want to thank. Arrange them in
a scrapbook and try to be as creative as possible in decorating it.
Below each photo, write down what you want to thank them for.
Show the scrapbook to them afterwards.
B. When one does something kind to us, we have the feeling of
wanting to give back. This is because we also want others to
feel as touched as we were and to pass on the kindness as well.
Discover another way of expressing appreciation by watching
either Pay It Forward or It’s a Wonderful Life, two films that
highlight expressing gratitude. Discuss your thoughts with your
parent or guardian.

Performance Task 6
Writing a Story
In this activity, you will be tapping into your imagination to write a
story of your own. The story should make use of different narrative
elements, such as setting, characters, point of view, conflict, and plot—
which is further divided into exposition, rising action, and climax.
I. Prewrite. Brainstorm for a possible plot for your story. To do so,
recall ideas you find interesting enough to write about. Afterwards,
arrange the details in a graphic organizer as shown in the example
below.
Characters Ray and Manang Petunia
Setting Afternoon, in a subdivision
Conflict
Ray’s remote-controlled airplane got stuck in a tree
inside Manang Petunia’s home.
Plot
Exposition: Ray has been playing with his remote-controlled
airplane, which he got as a present for his birthday,
near Manang Petunia’s house. The old lady is feared by
many because she is known to be ill-tempered.
Rising Action: Ray happened to make the airplane fly too close
to Manang Petunia’s house and there, it got stuck in a tree
and won’t move anymore.
Climax: Ray tries to sneakily get his toy back. He then hears
the noise of someone going out and it turns out
it’s Manang Petunia, who has caught him in the act.
Falling Action: Ray explains himself and apologizes.
Manang Petunia, satisfied with his apology, fetches a stick
to help poke the stuck airplane free from the tree and gives
it back to him.
Resolution: Ray comes to realize that Manang Petunia is a
kind old woman after all, and that there is no need to fear
her. He did not only get his toy back, he also made an new
friend.

II. Draft. Refer to the details in your graphic organizer as you write
your draft. Keep in mind that your goal here is to entertain your
readers. Also, when writing dialogue, strive to make them sound as
natural as possible.
III. Revise. Read your draft and identify which areas need
improvement or revision. You may evaluate it by answering the
questions below.
1. Is my introduction attention-grabbing? Will it entice my read-
ers to continue reading?
2. Are my characters identified clearly, whether through direct or
indirect means?
3. Is the conflict easily understandable to the reader?
4. Are there enough descriptive and sensory details used so that
it is easier for the reader to imagine the story as it happens?
5. Are the sentences varied in both style and length?
6. Is the dialogue natural?
7. Are the nouns, pronouns, and verbs used in their proper
forms?
IV. Edit and Write the Final Draft. Go over your work again. Correct
any error in grammar, punctuation, and spelling. You may use
editing and proofreading marks to mark those needed corrections.
Finally, transfer your work on a clean sheet of paper.
IV. Share. You may now share your story with your family or even
read it aloud in front of them for everyone to enjoy.
12
Performance Task 7
Relating a Personal Narrative
A personal narrative pertains to an experience that you relate to an
audience using first person. Imagine that as a supplement for your
writing class, you were tasked by your teacher to tell a personal
narrative in front of the class. First, think of which personal story you
would want to relay to your family. You may choose either a serious or
humorous story, perhaps even somewhere in between. Afterwards, list
down some key points that happened in that particular experience of
yours. This will help keep your talk on track.

Your narrative should have the elements of a story so as to make
use of what has been discussed in the writing lesson. Moreover,
the narrative must be interesting and entertaining enough to keep
your audience’s attention. Overall, it is expected that your personal
narrative flows well and contains the right elements.
The checklist that follows will help you assess your own
performance.
StoryTelling Checklist
Please check the box.
I spoke in a clear voice and in a suitable volume for the audience
to hear.
I employed clear enunciation.
I used non-verbal communication adequately to complement
my talk.
I had eye contact with my audience for most of my talk.
I maintained a charismatic presence on stage.
I looked confident, relaxed, and comfortable during my talk.
I kept the listeners interested throughout my presentation.
I started my story with an engaging opening and closed with
a sensible ending.
I presented my story in a sequence of events that my listeners can
easily follow.
I expressed by perception of the meaning of the story through
the way I told it.
14
Performance Task 8
Starting a Diary or Personal Journal
Taking photographs or videos are not the only ways to keep a record
of one’s experiences. One can also write about them in a journal or
diary. In this day and age of social media, the art of writing a diary
maybe in danger of disappearing altogether. In this activity, you will
try your hand at writing your own diary or journal entry.
I.	Prewriting
Recall an experience you had (it can be at home or in school, with
friends or with family, during a normal activity or a special event,
etc.) that has made a mark on you. Perhaps it was unforgettable
because you had so much fun during that time. Or maybe
because it was an embarrassing moment or something sad
happened. Whatever it may be, your task is to write about that
experience on a sheet of paper. It does not have to be formal in
tone; write simply as if you are talking to a close friend. Be sure
to write down your thoughts and feelings about the experience
clearly.
II.	Drafting
To build on what you have already written, try making entries
every day. Make it a habit every end of the day. Remember to use
the personal pronoun “I” in your entries as well and to write the
date when you wrote the entry.
Week
8
15
III.	Revising
Read over your journal entries. You may now start revising them
using the checklist below as guide.
Did I write from a first-person point of view?
Did I use a variety of sentences to make my writing interest-
ing?
Did I use complete sentences in my writing?
Did I use the pronoun “I” when expressing my point of view?
IV.	Editing
Edit your journal entry for punctuation marks, indentation,
capitalization, and spelling. Use editing marks to clearly show
what you edited. You may also continue this further and keep
writing every day.
V.	Publishing
Now that you have a clean copy, share your journal entries with a
friend so you can learn a bit more about them. You may also share
it with your family members.
16
Writing a Book Review
After reading a book, writing a review is one way of expressing your
opinions about it. Here, you can detail what you liked and what you
disliked about the story you just read. Moreover, you can use it as a
means to determine whether you can recommend the book to others or
not. Try your hand at writing a book review using the following guide:
I.	Prewrite
Think of a book you would like to review. Take note of the details
from the book that you like or dislike, then write the reasons why
you feel that way. You may do this in a graphic organizer like the
one below.
Performance Task 9
Book title, author, and opinion of the book selected:
Matilda by Roald Dahl
Brief summary of the story:
Matilda is a genius child with telekinetic powers who has to face various challenges
in life, such as mean adults and pressures in home and school.
What I like/Reason:
Matilda is a smart child who is very dedicated to her studies.
It makes me strive to be like her, too, with my studies.
What I dislike/Reason:
Her parents do not appreciate how smart their daughter is.
It makes me feel bad for Matilda because it make her feel sad and alone.
Recommendation:
I highly recommend others to read Matilda because it is an inspiring story about learning to
believe in your abilities and standing up against what is wrong. Check your local bookstore for a
copy now!
Week
6
17
II.	Draft
Start writing your draft based on the information you have written
in your graphic organizer.
III.	Revising
Read your draft to see if your writing is clear. Remember that
the book title and author should be clearly stated. You must also
provide a brief summary of the story so people who read your
review can see if this is something they indeed want to read or
not. If your review is still lacking some elements, then make the
necessary corrections on your draft.
IV. Write the Final Book Review
Write your book review on a separate paper. Read the sample
book review below as a guide.
V.	Sharing
Read your book review to your family. Ask them to give their
comments on your review.
Are you someone who loves reading? Do you stand up for what is
right? If you do, then you will probably befriend Matilda. The novel Matilda
by Roald Dahl is about a genius child with telekinetic powers who has to face
various challenges in life, such as mean adults and pressures at home and in
school. Matilda is dedicated to her studies, something we can strive to be,
too. She is also dedicated to her friends. Her parents and the headmistress of
their school do not appreciate these skills at all. What will she do then?
Matilda is a heartwarming and funny book about learning to believe
in your abilities and standing up against what is wrong. Check your local
bookstore for a copy now!

Developing a Good Speaking Voice
Work with your other family members. Read the poem below silently.
Then, share among your groupmates your understanding of the poem.
Show your interpretation of the poem in a group oral presentation.
You may think of gestures and recite some lines in a sing-song tone
to make your presentation lively. Remember to say each word loudly
and clearly and with correct pronunciation and confident speaking
voice. Your parent/guardian will give feedback regarding your group’s
performance.
Daddy Fell into the Pond
by Alfred Noyes
Everyone grumbled. The sky was grey.
We had nothing to do and nothing to say.
We were nearing the end of a dismal day,
And then there seemed to be nothing beyond,
Then Daddy fell into the pond!
And everyone’s face grew merry and bright,
And Timothy danced for sheer delight.
“Give me the camera, quick, oh quick!
He’s crawling out of the duckweed!” Click!
Then the gardener suddenly slapped his knee,
And doubled up, shaking silently,
And the ducks all quacked as if they were daft,
And it sounded as if the old drake laughed.
Oh, there wasn’t a thing that didn’t respond
When Daddy fell into the pond!

kabila nito ay malimit pa ring may nagaganap na sunog. Tulad na lamang
noong unang linggo ng Marso, ika-10 ng gabi, nagkaroon ng sunog sa isang

Performance Task 8
Enjoy Colloids
A colloid is a unique form of mixture. It is considered an intermediate
between the homogenous and heterogenous phase of mixture. This is
because it can look like a mixture, but in reality, its smaller particles are
just distributed in a dispersing medium. Examples of colloid are milk,
muddy water, butter, and rubber.
Procedure:
1. Form a group with your family members who can help with this
project.
2. Discuss among yourselves what kind of colloid you want to present
or demonstrate making in front of your parent or guardian.
3. Plan your presentation. The discussion about the colloid must
contain
	 the following:
a. name of the colloid
b. kind of colloid
c. how the colloid was made
4. Present or demonstrate how to make the colloid that you have in
front of your parent or guardian.
5. Take a picture of the colloid that you have presented and post it
on social media with a brief description.

Performance Task 9
Separation for Environmental Protection
There are lots of mixtures around us. The water, air, and even the soil or
land that we step on is a mixture. Because of this, separation techniques
are used to harvest materials or clean the environment. This helps
us a lot since we get everything that we need from our environment.
Mixture separation techniques have proven their worth in removing bad
elements from the environment like oil spills and solid waste in water
and soil.
Procedure:
1. In this activity, you will be designing your own tool for separating
mixtures. The tool must be able to separate harmful solids or
liquids from water or soil. You can use the following separation
mixtures:
• decantation
• evaporation
• filtering
• sieving
• magnets
2. Show a demonstration of your simple tool in front of your parent
or guardian. Show your resourcefulness by using different
materials that you can for your tool.

We can do our share in lessening pollution.
Materials:
art materials, any digital media
Procedure:
1. Look around your surroundings and take pictures of scenes that
show land, air, or water pollution. Investigate the sources of these
pollutions and their effect on our health and surroundings. Show
your work to your parent or guardian through the photos that you
have gathered.
2. Write a letter to your community suggesting ways to solve and
prevent these pollutions using the 5Rs technique.

  • 6. 2 Performance Task 1 Writing a Tour Material Do you feel proud of your identity as a Filipino? Would you like it if people from other countries come to visit, see, and know more about our country? If it was up to you, how would you introduce the Philippines to them? Try writing a tourism flyer that will exhibit the beauty of the Philippines through the following guide: I. Prewrite Start your writing by jotting down notes that will form your flyer’s outline. Research online or ask for reference materials from your local tourism office about sample tourism flyers you can study. You may also watch travel videos pertaining to different parts of our country online so you can describe the places better. II. Draft Using your plan as guide, write down the contents of your flyer. Add in details you think will be of interest to the potential tourist. Mention exact locations as well. III. Revise Read what you have written so far. Answer the questions below to check and improve your draft: 1. Does my draft include accurate and complete details? 2. Is my draft free from any grammar errors? 3. Is my draft free from spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and indentation errors? Week 1
  • 7. 3 IV. Edit Correct all the errors. Ideally, you should write all the corrections at the margin of your paper. Be sure to reread your work as well. V. Write the Final Draft When writing the final draft, make sure that all the errors you saw earlier are now corrected. Reread everything and check details such as capitalization and indentation. Check the example below for reference. VI. Share Read your work to your family. Ask them for their thoughts on it so that you can make improvements based on their comments. The Philippines is a beautiful country composed of 7600 islands. It is home to some of the most breathtaking sceneries not only in Asia but in the whole world. With the South China Sea on the west and the Pacific Ocean on the east, it is no wonder that the country has many nice beaches. Here, one can simply relax and feel the heat of the sun and the soothing waves of the ocean. The Philippines also has majestic mountains, valleys, hills, and plains one can visit. Among the must-see spots in the country are: the Mayon Volcano (known for its perfect cone shape) of Bicol; the beautiful Banaue Rice Terraces of Ifugao Province; the awesome Underground River of Palawan; the breathtaking Taal Volcano and Lake of Batangas; and many more. What are you waiting for? Come experience the island treasures of the Philippines. You surely won’t be disappointed!
  • 8. 4 Performance Task 2 Relics and Artifacts Inspecting objects from the past can tell us many things. A simple weapon used by our ancestors might give us a hint of how they fought to protect themselves or what animals they hunted to eat. By studying these, we are able to get a glimpse of how they lived. These old objects can either be artifacts or relics. Artifacts were objects made by humans, perhaps a weapon or tool. Meanwhile, relics are remains of something from the past, such as ruins. Look for photos of the following: 1. Leta-Leta Jarlet with Yawning Mouth 2. Tabon Skull Cap 3. Laguna Copper Plate 4. Fossilized Shells (Ammonites) Which are artifacts? Which are relics? What do they tell about the past? A. Choose a partner and discuss the objects above. Based on the definition for artifacts and relics given, classify to which they belong. Research as well on what these objects are. B. Have a discussion with the same partner about how the past affects the present. How can something from the past have any effect on what we know today? Write a short essay that combines both your opinions on the matter. Week 4
  • 9. 5 Performance Task 3 Writing a Dialogue A dialogue is a written conversation between two or more characters. It lets the readers know what the characters are talking about. Likewise, it can show what a character is like and how he or she interacts with others. I. Prewrite Think about a dialogue that two characters could have. It could just be them talking casually or perhaps there is a conflict that needs to be solved. The most important thing is for the reader to get a glimpse of what the character thinks and feels. Use the sample graphic organizer below to put down your ideas. Characters • Rick • Rick’s friends, Emma and Gabby Setting • One Saturday morning • At Rick’s house Problem Rick cannot play outside because he has to look after his baby sister. Solution Emma and Gabby simply stay at their house and play there. II. Write the First Draft Use your graphic organizer as basis for your first draft. Vary your sentence patterns and make your dialogue sound natural. Use punctuation marks correctly as well. Week 4
  • 10. 6 III. Revise Read your draft and see how you can still improve it. Answer the questions below to check and improve your draft: 1. Does my dialogue show how the characters feel? 2. Did I use a variety of sentence patterns? 3. Did I use quotation marks and other punctuation marks cor- rectly? 4. Did I use proper capitalization? 5. Are the words spelled correctly? IV. Edit and Write the Final Draft Check your work for errors. You may exchange work with a partner to get his or her opinions on the matter. Then, write the final draft. See the sample below. One Saturday morning, Emma and Gabby went to the house of their good friend Rick. “Let’s go play outside, Rick!” called Emma. Rick sighed. “Sorry, I can’t play outside right now.” “Why not?” Gabby asked. “My parents went to buy groceries and I have to look after my little sister,” Rick said. Emma and Gabby both noticed that their friend was sad. “That’s not a problem! We don’t have to go outside,” Gabby said. “Yeah! We can just play here until your parents come back,” Emma seconded. “Thank you both. Now all four of us, including my baby sister, can play and have fun!” Rick said with a smile. V. Share Read your dialogue to your family and ask them for their thoughts on it.
  • 11. 7 Performance Task 4 Next Question, Please Conducting an interview is a great way to get information that you need from a key person or something more knowledgeable in the matter you are interested in. However, if not done properly, you may end up not getting the information that you want or worse, may make the interviewee feel confused or even annoyed. In this activity, you will demonstrate your interview skills by partnering up with a family member. Consider choosing from the following scenarios that you and your partner (in his or her turn) can perform: • A pupil interviewing a government official on what he or she has done for the community • A news anchor interviewing a pupil who won an international competition among young inventors • An aspiring entrepreneur interviewing an owner of a small business on how to get started You may also come up with a different scenario. Make sure to do your research so you can fulfill your role well. Your performance will be evaluated through the following rubrics: Rubric on preparing for an interview CRITeria Yes No I did some research about the interviewee and details about the topic of the interview. I finalized my script and the questions. I identified and prepared the needed materials such as video camera, voice recorder, cell phone, notebook, and/or pen. I set up all the materials needed before the interviewee arrives. Week 2
  • 12. 8 Rubric on CONDUCTING an interview CRITeria Yes No Introduction I greeted the interviewee with an appropriate handshake and eye contact. I introduced myself to the interviewee and stated the purpose of the interview. Interview Questions My questions are adequate, relevant, acute, and well-sequenced to fulfill the purpose of the interview. I asked effective follow-up questions when answers are inadequate or unclear. My questions are well-thought-out, edited, and organized. Delivery I used proper language and spoke clearly and distinctly with a determined confidence all the time. I mispronounced no words and sounded natural. I avoided distracting expressions such as “um,”“uh,”“like that,” etc. Appearance and Poise I look prepared and confident. I maintained good posture and eye contact with the interviewee. I did not display any distracting mannerisms like flipping my hair back, playing with pen, etc. Attentiveness and Politeness I listened carefully to the interviewee. I did not hurry the interviewee in answering the questions. I waited for the interviewee to finish answering the question before asking for clarification. I thanked the interviewee for his/her willingness to be interviewed.
  • 13. 9 Performance Task 5 Actions Speak Louder than Words There are emotions that one can convey even without putting them into words. This is because feelings can sometimes be too big for words and the only way for us to make the other person feel it is through actions. For example, many of us express our gratitude to loved ones through actions that we know they would appreciate. Instead of telling your parents “thank you” for sending you to school, perhaps you simply work hard on your studies so that they can see how much you value their gift of education. Likewise, more than just saying “thanks” to a friend for being there for you, maybe you can also comfort him or her when he or she is the one facing problems. The following activities will explore how actions can indeed speak louder than words. A. Collect photos of a loved one you want to thank. Arrange them in a scrapbook and try to be as creative as possible in decorating it. Below each photo, write down what you want to thank them for. Show the scrapbook to them afterwards. B. When one does something kind to us, we have the feeling of wanting to give back. This is because we also want others to feel as touched as we were and to pass on the kindness as well. Discover another way of expressing appreciation by watching either Pay It Forward or It’s a Wonderful Life, two films that highlight expressing gratitude. Discuss your thoughts with your parent or guardian. Week 6
  • 14. 10 Performance Task 6 Writing a Story In this activity, you will be tapping into your imagination to write a story of your own. The story should make use of different narrative elements, such as setting, characters, point of view, conflict, and plot— which is further divided into exposition, rising action, and climax. I. Prewrite. Brainstorm for a possible plot for your story. To do so, recall ideas you find interesting enough to write about. Afterwards, arrange the details in a graphic organizer as shown in the example below. Characters Ray and Manang Petunia Setting Afternoon, in a subdivision Conflict Ray’s remote-controlled airplane got stuck in a tree inside Manang Petunia’s home. Plot Exposition: Ray has been playing with his remote-controlled airplane, which he got as a present for his birthday, near Manang Petunia’s house. The old lady is feared by many because she is known to be ill-tempered. Rising Action: Ray happened to make the airplane fly too close to Manang Petunia’s house and there, it got stuck in a tree and won’t move anymore. Climax: Ray tries to sneakily get his toy back. He then hears the noise of someone going out and it turns out it’s Manang Petunia, who has caught him in the act. Falling Action: Ray explains himself and apologizes. Manang Petunia, satisfied with his apology, fetches a stick to help poke the stuck airplane free from the tree and gives it back to him. Resolution: Ray comes to realize that Manang Petunia is a kind old woman after all, and that there is no need to fear her. He did not only get his toy back, he also made an new friend. Week 7
  • 15. 11 II. Draft. Refer to the details in your graphic organizer as you write your draft. Keep in mind that your goal here is to entertain your readers. Also, when writing dialogue, strive to make them sound as natural as possible. III. Revise. Read your draft and identify which areas need improvement or revision. You may evaluate it by answering the questions below. 1. Is my introduction attention-grabbing? Will it entice my read- ers to continue reading? 2. Are my characters identified clearly, whether through direct or indirect means? 3. Is the conflict easily understandable to the reader? 4. Are there enough descriptive and sensory details used so that it is easier for the reader to imagine the story as it happens? 5. Are the sentences varied in both style and length? 6. Is the dialogue natural? 7. Are the nouns, pronouns, and verbs used in their proper forms? IV. Edit and Write the Final Draft. Go over your work again. Correct any error in grammar, punctuation, and spelling. You may use editing and proofreading marks to mark those needed corrections. Finally, transfer your work on a clean sheet of paper. IV. Share. • 16. 12 Performance Task 7 Relating a Personal Narrative A personal narrative pertains to an experience that you relate to an audience using first person. Imagine that as a supplement for your writing class, you were tasked by your teacher to tell a personal narrative in front of the class. First, think of which personal story you would want to relay to your family. You may choose either a serious or humorous story, perhaps even somewhere in between. Afterwards, list down some key points that happened in that particular experience of yours. This will help keep your talk on track. Topic: Noteworthy things that happened: • • • • • • • • Week 2
  • 17. 13 Your narrative should have the elements of a story so as to make use of what has been discussed in the writing lesson. Moreover, the narrative must be interesting and entertaining enough to keep your audience’s attention. Overall, it is expected that your personal narrative flows well and contains the right elements. The checklist that follows will help you assess your own performance. StoryTelling Checklist Please check the box. I spoke in a clear voice and in a suitable volume for the audience to hear. I employed clear enunciation. I used non-verbal communication adequately to complement my talk. I had eye contact with my audience for most of my talk. I maintained a charismatic presence on stage. I looked confident, relaxed, and comfortable during my talk. I kept the listeners interested throughout my presentation. I started my story with an engaging opening and closed with a sensible ending. I presented my story in a sequence of events that my listeners can easily follow. I expressed by perception of the meaning of the story through the way I told it.
  • 18. 14 Performance Task 8 Starting a Diary or Personal Journal Taking photographs or videos are not the only ways to keep a record of one’s experiences. One can also write about them in a journal or diary. In this day and age of social media, the art of writing a diary maybe in danger of disappearing altogether. In this activity, you will try your hand at writing your own diary or journal entry. I. Prewriting Recall an experience you had (it can be at home or in school, with friends or with family, during a normal activity or a special event, etc.) that has made a mark on you. Perhaps it was unforgettable because you had so much fun during that time. Or maybe because it was an embarrassing moment or something sad happened. Whatever it may be, your task is to write about that experience on a sheet of paper. It does not have to be formal in tone; write simply as if you are talking to a close friend. Be sure to write down your thoughts and feelings about the experience clearly. II. Drafting To build on what you have already written, try making entries every day. Make it a habit every end of the day. Remember to use the personal pronoun “I” in your entries as well and to write the date when you wrote the entry. Week 8
  • 19. 15 III. Revising Read over your journal entries. You may now start revising them using the checklist below as guide. Did I write from a first-person point of view? Did I use a variety of sentences to make my writing interest- ing? Did I use complete sentences in my writing? Did I use the pronoun “I” when expressing my point of view? IV. Editing Edit your journal entry for punctuation marks, indentation, capitalization, and spelling. Use editing marks to clearly show what you edited. You may also continue this further and keep writing every day. V. Publishing Now that you have a clean copy, share your journal entries with a friend so you can learn a bit more about them. You may also share it with your family members.
  • 20. 16 Writing a Book Review After reading a book, writing a review is one way of expressing your opinions about it. Here, you can detail what you liked and what you disliked about the story you just read. Moreover, you can use it as a means to determine whether you can recommend the book to others or not. Try your hand at writing a book review using the following guide: I. Prewrite Think of a book you would like to review. Take note of the details from the book that you like or dislike, then write the reasons why you feel that way. You may do this in a graphic organizer like the one below. Performance Task 9 Book title, author, and opinion of the book selected: Matilda by Roald Dahl Brief summary of the story: Matilda is a genius child with telekinetic powers who has to face various challenges in life, such as mean adults and pressures in home and school. What I like/Reason: Matilda is a smart child who is very dedicated to her studies. It makes me strive to be like her, too, with my studies. What I dislike/Reason: Her parents do not appreciate how smart their daughter is. It makes me feel bad for Matilda because it make her feel sad and alone. Recommendation: I highly recommend others to read Matilda because it is an inspiring story about learning to believe in your abilities and standing up against what is wrong. Check your local bookstore for a copy now! Week 6
  • 21. 17 II. Draft Start writing your draft based on the information you have written in your graphic organizer. III. Revising Read your draft to see if your writing is clear. Remember that the book title and author should be clearly stated. You must also provide a brief summary of the story so people who read your review can see if this is something they indeed want to read or not. If your review is still lacking some elements, then make the necessary corrections on your draft. IV. Write the Final Book Review Write your book review on a separate paper. Read the sample book review below as a guide. V. Sharing Read your book review to your family. Ask them to give their comments on your review. Are you someone who loves reading? Do you stand up for what is right? If you do, then you will probably befriend Matilda. The novel Matilda by Roald Dahl is about a genius child with telekinetic powers who has to face various challenges in life, such as mean adults and pressures at home and in school. Matilda is dedicated to her studies, something we can strive to be, too. She is also dedicated to her friends. Her parents and the headmistress of their school do not appreciate these skills at all. What will she do then? Matilda is a heartwarming and funny book about learning to believe in your abilities and standing up against what is wrong. Check your local bookstore for a copy now!

Daddy Fell into the Pond by Alfred Noyes Everyone grumbled. The sky was grey. We had nothing to do and nothing to say. We were nearing the end of a dismal day, And then there seemed to be nothing beyond, Then Daddy fell into the pond! And everyone’s face grew merry and bright, And Timothy danced for sheer delight. “Give me the camera, quick, oh quick! He’s crawling out of the duckweed!” Click! Then the gardener suddenly slapped his knee, And doubled up, shaking silently, And the ducks all quacked as if they were daft, And it sounded as if the old drake laughed. Oh, there wasn’t a thing that didn’t respond When Daddy fell into the pond! Performance Task 10 Week 3
