Planning booklet
1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
College costs
Publishing and distribution fees.
Travel costs
Available resources:
Mac books and computers are available to work on in college, this enables me to use Photoshop.
Graphics tablet (iPad Pro, Apple pencil).
Paper, pencil and pens
Printer
2. Quantity:
Because it’s a college project the quantity of books printed will only be one or two. On a larger scale books,
would need to be printed in bulk.
Audience and Target Market:
Children aged 3-6
Male (Characters and colours) suitable for female audience as well.
Parents (Low, middle class) Less income, quality book for a cheap price.
Quality Factors:
Cover of book – Hard cover (Card or lamination)
Pages – standard paper or extra quality.
Colour – Ink
Message – other than the images the book has to have meaning and an outcome after you’ve read it.
Codes of Practice:
Sets the responsibilities and the required standards.
3. Regulation:
Safety - http://www.toysadvice.co.uk/toy-safety-standards-uk.html
Is the book safe for a child? If the book has extras, anything toy like then it needs to be safe for the use of a
child. Choking hazards, sharp edges etc.
My book doesn’t have any extras and is just a basic book therefore regulations shouldn’t be a bother.
Copyright:
The legal right given to the originator to publish, print, film etc.
If there is any copyrighted material published or distributed by law you can be punished. 6 months and/or a
fine up to £50,000.
The artwork in my book will be drawn and created by me and use no copyrighted material.
Ethical Issues:
“A problem or situation that requires a person or organisation to choose between alternatives that must be
evaluated as right(ethical) or wrong (unethical).
No ethical issues in the writing or artwork of the book.
4. Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.
Resource:
Do you have
it? What do you need to do to get it?
Access to Photoshop through PC or
Mac Yes College
Paper (for planning and final book) No College
Printer No College
Graphics tablet (iPad Pro, Apple Pencil) Yes My own resource
5. Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
Sketching out the characters using iPad and Pencil. (POSSIBLY TAKE PHOTOS TO USE AS AN
OUTLINE OF CHARACTERS).
Transfer sketches from iPad on to MacBook and open in Photoshop.
Hopefully will have some finalised characters.
Work on facial expressions to show emotions of character. Also, different angles and points of view.
Session 2:
Start on the first location/setting.
11. Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Trip Hazards
Make sure bags are under desks, pick up and move
anything which could be a hazard.
Fire Clear exits, routes and instructions
Looking at a poor screen, or looking at a screen for too
long may cause headaches etc.
Break every hour and ten minutes.
MacBook screens are high quality and adjustable.
