5. Carrying skills forward
Basic professional skills in any industry can be carried forward in
a career.
Communication and time keeping are essential to all roles and
jobs in any industry.
From my experience specifically, working with different
companies and building relationships with other colleagues
meant I adapted to the methods and idiosyncrasies of different
business.
Organisational systems and processes from the manufacturing process of the stock and then I would be part of the team to put away the stock in an organized and clear order
Orders would then come in and I would have to receive them from someone in the sales teams go back to the racking and pick the stock in the quantity that is required from the order
After this we would pack the orders in to boxes and label them clearly before making up pallets that would be delivered by drivers to various hospitals around the midands
For my delivery role the would entail getting to the clinic for about 7 am taking an initial pack of tests to a lab in coventry before travelling on to a clinic in Leicester to collect the samples from there, ten driving back to the Birmingham clinic collecting their samples and taking all of these to a lab in Wolverhampton
This would all include other non-regular jobs such as picking emergency samples up from people leaving the country for business at short notice and rushing their results to a lab
For both roles I had communication was the most important skill to use, poor communication could lead to incorrect orders being filled and sent, the wrong stock being requested producing a build up in one item and then not having enough of another, ineffective communication could at times lead to build ups of resentment or irritation with colleagues resulting in unnecessary for stress within the factory.
Organization again is key and this is especially key at the start of a process and can often take more time to correct poor organization than the tiny extra amount of extra time it would have taken in the first place.
For example in my warehouse role if the stock wasn’t stacked away neatly and optimally you wont notice until you have the last stack of stock to put away and you find yourself with no room on the racks for it.
Communication while driving for the clinic was essential if I hit traffic or was delayed on my rout I would have to immediately let the clinic know about my delay with estimations so that they could get in tough with the lab.
Being prompt and proactive is a good way to stay ahead when you work to tight deadline and you are required to have tasks done before a certain time every day, an example from my work is that I would always have to have all deliveries for the day packed onto a pallet before 9am so that out delivery driver could leave to get them done.
