Geometric Isomers

2.  Geometric isomers are two or more chemical
compounds that have the same type and same
number of atoms.
 2 subcategories of Geometric Isomers are Cis-
and Trans-
 The main difference between a structural
isomer and a geometric isomer is that
geometric isomers differ on arrangement in
space while structural isomers differ in
connectivity between atoms.

3. The reason the Cis is in
the name is because the
bonds are located on
the same side. This side
is based on the line that
runs vertically through
the double-bonded
carbons.

4. The reason for the trans
being in the name is due to
the fact that the two outer
CH3’s are on opposite sides
of the line that runs the
double bonded carbons.

5. Cis Trans
Fun fact: These 2 isomers are hard to
separate by means of distillation
because of the closeness of their
boiling points.

6.  Geometric isomers differ in three dimensional
arrangement.
 The two sub categories of Geometric isomers
are Cis- and Trans-
 Another name for Geometric isomerism is Cis-
Trans isomerism.
 For it to be a Geometric Isomer, there must be
no free rotation around a single bond.
