3. Smart needs baking in
• Ability to impact cost and
functional capabilities of
construction projects rapidly
diminishes.
• At the same time the cost of
design changes increases.
• Integrated building and
workplace design needs to
be part of the strategic
definition.

4. Smart Building:
1. Provides actionable information regarding the performance of building systems and
facilities;
2. Proactively monitors and detects attributes of building systems;
3. Integrates at an enterprise level for real-time reporting and management information;
4. Incorporates tools, technologies, resources and practices to contribute to energy
conservation and environmental sustainability.
Intelligent Campus
1.Comprises of a number of smart buildings physically networked and logically connected;
2. Incorporates technologies that bridge geographical separations in the built realm;
3 Delivers a common underlying infrastructure that provides data insight and engagement.

5. The Cultural Journey to Here
• E&F and CIS partnership with close alignment to deliver Smart Buildings and develop
the Intelligent Campus..
• Lessons learned meetings involving both E&F and CIS occurring at each key
milestone/sign off point within projects.
• Provisional sums need to accommodate both the flexibility to change spec (if required)
and to reflect the actual predicted cost.
• Has considered our approach to building specifications, exploring whether there is
scope to better balance risk and flexibility in building design.
• Together Everyone Achieves More. Promoted an innovative culture for suggestions
and improvement ideas for how we could work more effectively direct to Senior
Management in both E&F and CIS.

8. Current Position
New Flagship Student Building in use
from September 2019
Converged systems with physical and
digital, local and mobile all blended into
room.
AV inputs in each teaching space will be
encoded.
Can be distributed to all display devices
on the campus.
Immense flexibility for content
distribution and expanded room
capabilities, creating truly agile and
scalable learning environments

11. Key Challenges
SUSTAINABILTY CREDENTIALS
• Student awareness of environmental issues means that universities need to identify
ways of radically driving carbon emissions down across their campus with a key
focus on building performance, energy efficiency, heat and transport and
renewables.
STUDENT EXPERIENCE
• Student expectation of the university experience has never been higher and in
addition to the quality of education provided, top universities also have to offer the
best environment and experience in order to attract the best students
HIGH LEVEL FACILITIES
• Rollout of ultrafast broadband and 5G, whilst supporting innovation in machine-to-
machine (M2M) communications and Internet of Things (IoT) services.
