Assignment 10 - Analysing
OTS
Ashley Goodall
The Walking Dead
Its a Non-Linear OTS:
• To introduce the theme of zombies and disaster in Atlanta
• To symbolize themes: loneliness, devastation, panic, death, survival
• Introduce the characters
The OTS prepares for the film by:
• Establishing the sub genre (zombie)
• Establishing the setting (Atlanta)
• Establish the themes
• Creates Narrative Enigma:
• What happened? (disaster happened)
• Where did everyone go? (city is left deserted)
• How will they overcome this level disaster?
The Walking Dead (continued)
It mostly doesn't challenge forms and/or conventions of the genre?
• Non linear is common for zombie genre
• stereotypical place, a city
• Same characters/people, strong, weak and young (children, women and men)
• No action is happening/ special affects or dead bodies
• Reinforces of the aspect of disaster/virus
Present credits and the main title:
• Rule of Thirds
• For actors second name is in bold
• Black and whit font to stand out
• Main title 'Dead' and 'Walking' are much bolder
The Walking Dead (continued)
Characters representations and why?
• South America, middle class
• Cops: Uniform, strong posture, badges, police photograph (broken frame, connote danger),
'Copper Shot' in picture of Rick in old newspaper.
• Women: Happy, glad, in a broken frame(could connote danger)
• Present credits and main title by:
• Use of rule of thirds
• Second name of each actor in bold font
• Black and white to stand out
• In main title 'Walking' and 'Dead' are much bolder than 'The'
• Title is presented in a specific order 'The' 'Dead' 'Walking'
Rule ofThirds to
establish setting and
credits
Empty freeway towards
the city but jammed
packet and deserted
coming away from the
city.The people must of
been escaping from an
unknown disaster
Main setting shown in the
background
Framing of character introduction
(broken frame)
Image is shown to be in a
broken frame, this could
mean that the character is
in a situation of danger.
Actors second name in
bold font
Time lapse and birds eye view shot
This main road should be jammed packed full of cars
but instead it is left deserted. This could connote
danger, devastation.
Secondly creates the narrative enigma of 'Where did
everyone go and why?'
Use of Props used to create theme
of disaster
Name of the executive
producer is in a much
bolder font than the title
name
Destroyed/ rotten bus is
clearly shown to show that
a diaster has taken place
Bold title font
