• conflict is mental, rather than physical. The
protagonist has become involved in a
dangerous situation which literally threatens
their sanity. They must use mental prowess
to overcome their opponent, whether the
battle is inside their own head or it a battle of
wits.
3. MISE-EN-SCENE
Props-Mirrors are a main prop in this subgenre as it gives us
a literal reflection of the character ironically showing there
inner self also showing the dark side
Location- Physiological thrillers often use modern
surrounding as it creates a more mental scariness rather than
an empty old field which would get confused for horror.
Lighting- Shadows and low lighting are typical lighting
techniques used in this subgenre. They are sometimes used to
reflect the inner 'dark side’ of a character and also to create
tension within the scene.
Costumes- to discuise the villan they usally wear
normal/causual attire fitting in
4. CAMERA ANGLES/MOVEMENT
• Within this subgenre camera movements are
usually quick to build tension and panic within
the scene, which reflects the attitudes of the
character onto the audience meaning that they
are on edge usually.
5. SOUND
• The music in this subgenre is usually very
tense and built with many textures. When the
scenes with action in are playing, the sound
track gets much more tense with louder and a
more built/finished texture.
• The sound track within the thriller will mainly
have the sounds of strings and horns in major
chords to create a more mysterious/eerie
atmosphere.
6. EDITING
Flashbacks- This happens very often in these
subgenred films as it shows the past and gives the
audience insite to the characters past life
Black and white colouring- this is used to
enhance the shadows within the scene giving a creepier
atmosphere
Montage- this is used to show the feelings and
emotions of suspense and tension within the scene.
