4. he increase in the number of chronic diseases, and physician
Tshortages has had a significant impact on the cost of healthcare
and the quality of services that patients receive. With this crisis
at hand, the healthcare industry is turning towards technology for
answers. Technology has always played a decisive role in the
healthcare and life science industry; be it biotechnology or Information
technology. Many healthcare IT companies are proposing innovative
solutions to help create a value-based care system, and improved health
outcomes.
One such disruptive technology that has greatly penetrated the
healthcare space is Internet of Things (IoT). The healthcare industry is
made up of a vast ecosystem of smaller sub-divisions; starting from the
pharmaceutical industry, pharmacies, hospitals, healthcare insurance,
RTHS and personal healthcare. All these sectors are starting to
integrate IoT into their activities in the form of robotics, biosensors,
smart pills, smart beds, treatment procedures, and medical devices so
on. IoT has enhanced the way we treat patients, tackle day-to-day
healthcare challenges, and keep track of our healthcare routine, with
utmost precision. It has the potential to provide physicians with
valuable data that help them improve patient outcomes. Healthcare IoT
offers a situational awareness around patients as well as hospital
operations.
The overall cost of the healthcare IoT space is estimated to reach a
whopping $117 billion by 2020. But with this level of adoption of IoT
or any technology, there comes a downside. Every revolution should
always be accepted ‘with a pinch of salt.’
IoT brings us ease and awareness, but at the huge risk of data theft. The
security concerns, vulnerabilities, and risk of healthcare data being
stolen or misused are great. We freak when our bank accounts get
hacked or credit cards are stolen; but then, imagine the risk of losing
medical data or a medical device being compromised. This in itself is
something highly scary, harmful or potentially life threatening, which
is why strong security services are critical. There are numerous
considerations that go into finding weaknesses in the IoT based devices
and systems, cyber-security top the list. The potential of IoT is
immense, but the use of this technology in healthcare needs to be
addressed with utmost scrutiny and safety.
IoT being in its nascent stages has a long way to go, before we can
utilize it to the best of possibilities that it brings along!

Providing healthcare solutions of
International standards to every individual,
by being an Organization committed to
achievement and maintenance of excellence in
education, research and healthcare for the benefit of
humanity”.
Established in the year 1983 by Dr. Prathap C
Reddy, Apollo Hospitals is renowned as the
nation’s first corporate hospital. Apollo Hospitals is
acclaimed for its pioneering private healthcare
revolution in the country. As the forerunner of
integrated healthcare in Asia, the group’s futuristic
vision has ensured that it has been in a position of
strength at every pivotal touch point of the
healthcare delivery chain.
Apollo has over the years, impacted over 65 million
individuals from 140 countries, who have honored
the organization with their trust; this is the decisive
measure of success for the group.
Over the years, Apollo Hospitals has carried the
torch of healthcare to distant and several under-
served corners of India. With an expanse of
innovation, technology and commitment, its legacy
remains as an unwavering dedication to clinical
excellence. A relentless pursuit of expertise and the
ever-tender empathy are key elements in its vision
and plan for the future. Prevention is one of the best
aspects of health care reform; Apollo wishes to see
good health care brought to all the people at a
reasonable cost.
The Visionary behind the Success of Apollo
Hospitals
Dr. Prathap C Reddy is the Visionary, and
Founder- Chairman of Apollo Hospitals. He is
widely acknowledged as the architect of modern
Indian healthcare. Dr. Reddy is best described as a
compassionate humanitarian, who has dedicated his
life to improving access, affordability, quality,
choice of health care, and to bring world-class
healthcare within the economic and geographic
reach of millions.
Born in the small village of Aragonda in Andhra
Pradesh, Dr. Reddy has always worked towards
making healthcare reach the distant corners of India.
Always the visionary, he harnessed technology and
insurance to take healthcare to the masses. The
ground-breaking success of telemedicine and
innovative insurance in Aragonda, by becoming the
world’s first V-SAT enabled remote village,
13. validated the concept of ‘Healthcare
for All’. He also envisioned the
pioneering Apollo Reach Hospitals
model, which takes high quality
healthcare to semi urban and rural
geographies. This scheme has been
taking good health to the very heart of
India.
A diligent advocate for creating access
to healthcare through insurance, Dr.
Reddy firmly believes that mandatory
health insurance is critical for the
nation. To uphold this thought he came
up with the innovative insurance
project of Re.1 a day, which he
introduced decades ago in his native
village. This concept has now been
adopted in multiple ways across the
country for the below-poverty-line
population. Dr. Reddy is a firm
believer of preventive healthcare, he
has passionately propagated the
concept of Annual Health Checks and
the group has performed over 15
million health checks.
In service to the nation, Dr. Reddy has
also been the Chairman of the
Confederation of Indian Industry’s
National Health Council and advisor to
its committees on Healthcare, Health
Insurance, Public Health and Pharma.
He was pivotal in the genesis of
NATHEALTH - the Healthcare
Federation of India, which today is one
of the nation’s most powerful and
influential forums in facilitating the
shift in mind-set, delivery and policy
making to nurture the gift of good
health for all, in India.
Dr. Reddy’s incredible journey is
captured through a biography entitled
“Healer: Dr. Prathap Chandra Reddy
and the Transformation of India”. He
was honored with the ‘Padma
Vibhushan’ and ‘Padma Bhushan’ by
the Government of India, as a
salutation of his untiring pursuit of
excellence in healthcare.
A devoted philanthropist, Dr. Reddy
introduced social initiatives, which
helped surpass barriers in pediatric
care and are remarkable feats. The
Save a Child’s Heart Initiative that
addresses the prevalent issue of
congenital heart disease in India is one
of the many such initiatives.
Recognizing further that, there is a
need to look at the overall population
health, merely treating the disease is
not enough; Dr. Reddy proposed and
established an exemplary model of
CSR in community healthcare – The
Total Health Foundation in
Thavanampalle Mandal of Chittoor
district of Andhra Pradesh. This work
is providing ‘holistic healthcare’ for
the community of 70,000 individuals
from the infants to the elderly. This
project is unique in terms of scope,
scale and process and promotes holistic
health with a focus on physical,
mental, emotional and even
environmental wellbeing and its impact
has been commendable.
Technology and Innovation: Apollo’s
USPs
Apollo Hospitals have been pioneers of
the technology revolution, the
organization utilises technology in
several forms - for diagnostic and
therapeutic purposes, to improve
efficiencies of healthcare delivery, to
take specialist opinion right wherever
it is needed and moreover to screen
and detect disease early on. In addition
to remote healthcare, from a clinical
perspective too, Apollo has been one of
the early adopters of technology.
The group’s verticals include
Hospitals, Pharmacies, Primary Care
& Diagnostic Clinics and Telemedicine
units across 10 countries, Health
Insurance Services, Global Projects
Consultancy, Medical Colleges,
Medvarsity for E-Learning, Colleges of
Nursing, Hospital Management and a
Research Foundation with focus on
Global Clinical Trials,
Epidemiological studies, Stem cell and
Genetic research. Additionally, ‘Ask
Apollo’ - an online consultation portal
and Apollo Home Health provide the
care continuum.
The group has reliably led game-
changing improvements in healthcare
by bringing latest innovations in key
medical specialties and super-
specialties, to the people to bring
14. equivalence with the West. Some of the
world-class technology and procedures
that the hospitals provide include
Proton Treatment Centre, da Vinci®
Robotic Surgical System,
Renaissance® Robotic Surgical
System, Minimally Invasive Cardiac
Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery, Oral &
Maxillofacial Surgery, Bone Marrow
Transplant, Hand Microsurgery,
Infertility Care, Hip Arthroscopy,
Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR), The
Ideal Knee, Trans Oral Robotic
Surgery, and Surgery for Parkinson's
disease. Robotic Surgery is another
area where technology is leveraged to
improve clinical outcomes and in
which Apollo is a leader.
The Apollo hospitals are well equipped
with various diagnostic tools, which
are state of the art and provide precise
diagnostics within minutes, some of
which are CyberKnife®, Novalis Tx™,
G Scan, 320 Slice Advanced
Technology, OCT Technique - Optical
Coherence Tomography, Bioresorbable
Vascular Scaffold (BVS), Single Port
Endoscopic technique of Carpal
Tunnel Release (ECTR), and TrueBeam
STX.
Apollo e-ICU is an interesting
example, wherein the intensive care
personnel can monitor the vital stats of
ICU patients remotely or if travelling,
from another Apollo hospital. This
technology is currently available in 13
different Apollo locations. Apollo also
makes use of IoT technology and
wearable devices, that are used to
monitor fever in pediatrics patients in
real time where data is directly
transferred from wearer to doctor.
Apollo has leveraged technology to
increase consumer convenience and
engagement. For instance, a
combination of telecommunications, IT
and EMR, help deliver medicine
remotely.
Furthermore, another interesting
initiative is ‘Apollo PRISM’ which
allows doctors and patients to access
medical records from anywhere,
anytime. Also, ‘Ask Apollo’, a
tool for patients to book
appointments
digitally
across all
super
specialties, has been very well received
by the medical fraternity as well as the
patients.
Tele Health Programs Apollo caters
to
A healthy population is the bedrock of
a healthy economy and Apollo Remote
Healthcare was purposely-designed to
provide specialized solutions such as
Tele Consults, Tele Radiology, Tele
Cardiology, Tele Ophthalmology, to
name a few, to reach remote
geographies. A few of the noteworthy
initiatives would include:
• Tele Ophthalmology – A Public
Private Partnership project with 115
centres in association with
Government of Andhra Pradesh.
• e- UPHC (electronic urban primary
health centre) with 164 centres all
across Andhra Pradesh.
• Tele Emergency services in the
Himalayas.
• Partnership with the National
Thermal Power Corporation of
India.
• Tele Geriatric Care - Tele
consultations and Tele emergency
services provided through skilled
manpower.
• Common Service Centres (CSC) –
In partnership with the Government
of India, Apollo remote healthcare
supports over 60,000 CSCs where
primary healthcare is rendered
across remote geographies.
• Beat Diabetes – A social initiative
15. to screen and treat Non-communicable
diseases.
Each of these partnerships underscores
a commitment to deliver care
seamlessly to fellow Indians and the
passion of the organization to facilitate
timely medical attention, critical to
saving lives.
Present Trends in the Healthcare
Sector
Today the private health care industry
addresses over 60 percent of India’s
medical needs. India is undergoing a
tremendous transition from
communicable diseases to non-
communicable diseases or NCD’s (like
cancers, cardiovascular disease,
respiratory illnesses, diabetes etc.). The
rise of NCD’s presents a great
challenge for the nation’s healthcare
ecosystem. Addressing this changing
pattern of diseases on a war-footing is
the organization’s main aim. With this
in mind, Apollo has been promoting
preventive medicine.
The country faces challenges on the
health infrastructure and resource
front. The number of trained doctors,
nurses and allied staff fall greatly short
of the required numbers, to efficiently
treat the growing population of India.
Also, there is a shortage of beds that
can deliver effective care to all our
citizens. Therefore, the need to
aggressively increase the availability of
health infrastructure and resources, this
is the duty of all the stakeholders. At
Apollo hospitals each and every
person, institution and organizations
that can work to alleviate the health, is
welcome. Any steps were taken
towards - the creation of additional
infrastructure, ensuring the viability of
existing hospitals and resources is
welcome.
Future of Healthcare Industry from
Apollo's Perspective
India is known as the ‘Land of
Healing’ forever now, and even today,
patients from over 140 countries come
looking for advanced medical care at
an optimal cost. The most competitive
advantage for India lies in its large
pool of well-trained medical
professionals who have been delivering
clinical outcomes equivalent to that of
their best counterparts in the world.
The cost of surgery in India is about
one-tenth of that in the US or Western
Europe with minimal or zero waiting
time and this makes it very attractive
for many. Moreover, medical tourism
can be a significant foreign revenue
generator for the nation.
Apollo having achieved noteworthy
success, and as a responsible
forerunner, is well-aware of its role to
keep supporting positive change and
accelerating inclusive progress. By
harnessing contemporary technologies
and its sharp clinical acumen, Apollo is
leading transformational shifts in
diagnostics, preventive healthcare,
advanced medical care, hospital
management processes and in remote
healthcare to name a few aspects.
Healthcare is one of India's largest
sectors both in terms of revenue &
employment. With a CAGR of 16.5
percent, the industry size is expected to
be USD280 billion by 2020.
In addition, Apollo is also working
closely with central industry bodies
and the nation’s administration to
introduce and facilitate progressive
policies, which would help fulfill their
mission of taking an international
standard of healthcare closer to all in
need. To closely address this issue,
there is an urgent need to expand
health insurance coverage for all
citizens. A protective Universal Health
Coverage model is a must; to achieve
this, first steps have been taken by the
Government through the
announcement of the National Health
Protection Scheme. Ultimately, the
pooling of health risks will be the most
effective means to ensure adequate
protection from disease for the
country’s citizens.

Having over a decade worth of experience in complete lifestyle disorder
healing, using the best of knowledge from the modern medicine and the
age old Ayurvedic therapies; Madhavbaug Clinics & Hospitals is one
of the leading healthcare clinics. Established in 2006, by Dr. Rohit Madhav
Sane, the M.D. & CEO; its mission is to “rid the society of heart disease
through well researched innovative therapies based on Ayurveda and modern
medicine, public education, and extensive research.” To get more details
about its services and uniqueness which this Hospital offers we bring you an
exclusive interview with Dr. Rohit.
1. Kindly brief us about the company.
Madhavbaug’s holistic lifestyle disorder healing concepts are based on the
amalgamation of modern diagnostics, and non-invasive Ayurvedic therapies that
are fused with allied sciences such as exercise, researched diet, yoga, stress
management and lifestyle modification. Madhavbaug mission is to reduce the
mortality and morbidity of cardiovascular diseases and burden of lifestyle disorders
like diabetes and blood pressure.
Madhavbaug has 14+ years of experience in the field of non-invasive heart care, with
140+ clinics and 2 hospitals across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Goa. By
2025, the plan is to have about 1,000 clinics all over the nation. The objective
of the clinics and hospitals is to serve as a multifunctional diagnostic and
treatment centers for heart diseases and lifestyle disorders like blood
pressure, obesity, dyslipidemia, and diabetes. This way, the clinics will
not only treat heart disease, but also the risk factors of heart disease in
order to reduce the morbidity and mortality.
2. Please tell us something about your Founder/CEO and his/her
contribution towards the company and his perspective about the
industry.
Dr. Rohit Madhav Sane is the first to conceptualize the idea that
ancient Indian medical science, Ayurveda, can play a big role in
chronic cardiac disease. The founder of Madhavbaug Clinics &
Hospitals in India, used his education in modern medicine after
which he undertook a meticulous research into Ayurveda.
Extensive experimentation and delving deeper into every minute
aspect of his study led him to find scientific evidence to
substantiate this novel idea. The effort resulted in a highly
effective alternative therapy for chronic heart failure through

19. combination of modern medical science and the well-
established therapies prescribed in Ayurveda.
Dr. Rohit Madhav did his MBBS from Aurangabad
University, MIMSR, Maharashtra, India and inherited his
Ayurveda knowledge and skills from his father. He has
innovated and copyrighted Sampurna Hridaya
Shuddhikaran therapy for chronic heart failure patients in
the year 2001 and designed the medical and non-medical
operations of Preventive cardiac center in the year 2005. He
and his team innovated non-invasive treatments to treat
Ischemic heart disease, reverse risk factors like diabetes,
hypertension and obesity.
He has presented several research papers on efficacy of
Madhavbaug treatments in national journals like Indian
Heart Journal by Cardiological Society of India and
international journals like Lancet and Circulation on
international platforms like American Heart
Association held World Cardiology Congress,
European Society of Cardiology and many more.
3. What is the current stage of Telehealth
programs in India? What is the future
outlook?
New health technologies are improving patients’
lives across India. They are building online
health repositories that are easily accessible. This
is essential to reducing the information gap
between India’s urban and rural providers.
AI-assisted remote care is particularly important
for patient monitoring before, during and after
medical procedures. Health & fitness apps and
sensor based wearables are no longer in the early
stages, but being increasingly adopted. There are
now apps that accurately assess hydration levels,
calorie intake, and monitor vitals.
Greater real-time collaboration between physicians
is possible through telemedicine. It’s getting much
simpler for patients to get second opinions and
specialty expertise, helping improve outcomes and save
lives. Also for physician scheduling, patients in India can
now go online to search for a doctor and schedule an
appointment just as easily as they can arrange a cab ride or
schedule a haircut.
Computing power is doubling every two years, allowing
tele-health technology to do increasingly amazing things.
4. Kindly describe in detail about your distinct services
and products.
We believe in a holistic method of healing that includes
proven Ayurvedic (Panchakarma) and lifestyle modification
based non-invasive therapies for heart disease management,
diabetes reversal, blood pressure management, obesity
management (weight loss), and rehabilitation after cardiac
bypass surgery.
Some of the treatments we offer are
Heart disease reversalŸ
Diabetes reversalŸ
BP managementŸ
Obesity managementŸ
Our distinct products also include ayurvedic medicines and
researched diet box for patients with specific health goals.
We also offer tele-consultation service and AI-based health
suggestions through our app.
5. How is technology helping you or how technology has
impacted the Healthcare industry?
Technology has had several advances enhancing all aspects
of life including the healthcare. Development of medical
devices, equipment and softwares have enabled this sector
to soar to great heights, making the lives of medical
professionals and patients a lot simpler than it used to be.
At Madhavbaug, we have used AI technology to develop an
app that collects patient information and provides sound
medical suggestions. This also enables us to provide
immediate emergency responses based on the condition of
the patient. This also enables us real-time monitoring of
patient stats and helps us provide instantaneous responses.
Further, we use continuous glucose monitoring system
(CGMS) which is an advanced technology that monitors
blood sugar constantly through a sensor based device for a
period of few days. This gives a more accurate
understanding of the average blood sugar levels.
6. Kindly talk about the effects of mergers and
consolidations happening in the Healthcare industry.
Consolidations and mergers has increased steadily over the
last decade. They have taken various forms as well, such as
joint ventures and affiliations. If done responsibly, it lead to
better healthcare and patient care.
“Successfully integrating
Ayurveda & Modern medical
sciences, to deliver world class
non-surgical heart treatments
and efficient patient centric care”
|17| August 2018
20. But the big question that anyone investing in consolidation
needs to ask is “Will this lead to better delivery or reduced
costs?” Some mergers only take place to reduce
competition and some affiliations are so loose that they do
not guarantee to achieve their designated interests.
7. How are you facing the challenges in terms of
changing trends, market players and innovations
happening in the industry?
Healthcare is one of India’s largest sectors. It is full of
opportunities and now gaining focus in the telemedical
sector. The medical marketplace is seeing some change in
trends currently but it does not change the fact that we are
pioneers in ayurveda and heart care. We as a brand have
gained the trust and confidence of our patients and
stakeholders
Our strong USP make us stand out among other players in
the field. Backed by years of research and efficiency in our
procedures, we have a very steady stand in the marketplace.
The challenge is to get people to have more acceptance in
Ayurveda for lifestyle disorders, but the scenario is
changing in our favour as we are seeing support from the
government and AYUSH in increasing the adoption of
Ayurveda in various parts of the nation.
8. How does the recent Government initiatives affecting
the current drug pricing in India?
Niti Aayog has proposed some major changes in Indian
pricing of drugs. These obviously have some advantages
and drawbacks as in their own way. The benefits obviously,
is the fact that medicines will be under new scrutiny and
will have to meet standards of WHO quality norms while
still maintaining the price surge in reference to the WPI.
This will ensure that subpar medicine are not reaching the
masses. The downfall is that without the
price surge, research into new drugs will be inhibited. Small
and medium enterprises will not be able to invest in new
drugs to combat the drawbacks of the current ones.
9. Do you feel there is a need to change the existing
medical plans as there is a significant rise in medical
expenses?
Yes, there is a need to change the existing medical plans.
We Indians are visiting hospitals in greater numbers than
ever in the past. New symptoms and problems keep
cropping up, and while what might be good for getting us
better, might not necessarily be good for our wallets.
That’s why Mr. Modi’s National health protection scheme
was so important, where 1 lakh cover was provided to
everyone. It might not be enough but it can be a start to
something significantly better for people.
10. What is the USP of your business? Key features and
highlights.
We specialize in holistic and researched Ayurvedic
(Panchakarma) and lifestyle modification based non-

23. WHAT ARE STEM CELLS?
Undifferentiated cells that are able to
differentiate and transform into any type of
cells of the body when and where needed. They
have an enormous potential to repair, heal and
regenerate. Stem cells come from blood, bone
marrow, umbilical cord blood and adipose
tissue.
TYPE OF STEM CELL THERAPY
Autologous stem cell therapy: Patient
receives stem cells from his/her own body
Allogeneic stem cell therapy: Patient receives
the stem cells donated by another individual

24. mismatching are not there and they pose the minimum risk
of immune rejection. Also, no side effects or adverse effects
are seen as a person’s own blood cells are used. They start
the healing process immediately in a natural way.
WHAT IS STEM CELL THERAPY?
The usage of stem cells to cure or treat a disease or repair
the injured tissue is defined as stem cell therapy. Stem cells
can be obtained from the bone marrow, adipose tissues etc.
Due to their tremendous potential to prevent and to treat
various health conditions and to repair the injured tissues
global research investigation is continuously being done as
to explore the maximum advantage of these cell lines.
The best example of the stem cell treatment is seen in the
patients suffering from restoring the vision of the damaged
eyes, grafting of the skin in severe burnt conditions. Stem
cell treatments for brain or neural diseases like Parkinson
and Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, preventing
heart strokes, curing diabetes, kidney disorders, autism, and
spinal cord injuries are progressively making their way.
WHAT ARE THE SOURCES OF STEM CELL?
Depending upon the disease different stem cell source can
be used in a specific condition. The procedure may involve
the extraction of stem cells from adipose tissue-derived
stem cells with the combination of PRP (Platelet-rich
plasma) or can be obtained from bone marrow that can
differentiate into the progenitor cells that differentiate into
various other tissues which can help in the therapy.
PROCEDURE OF STEM CELL THERAPY
The stem cells are isolated from the bone marrow or the
adipose tissues followed by their processing and enrichment
under sterile conditions. These activated stem cells are
placed back into the patient’s body at the target site for
repairing the damaged tissue. It is necessary that the stem
cells are injected in the specific area of injury as only then
the desired results will be achieved. Adipose stem cells are
preferred over bone marrow stem cells as they are easy to
isolate and contain a higher number of stem cells.
STEM CELLS INJECTIONS
The stem cells injections are gaining much of the interest
because it is devoid of the painful procedure, takes less time
in comparison to a surgery, there are no host and recipient
rejections as stem cells are harvested from the patient's
body itself and a targeted delivery system is available.
The stem cells obtained are processed in a sophisticated
stem cell lab and after activation are inserted back into the
host with the help intravenous, intramuscular, intra-arterial,
intradermal, and intrathecal injections as per the
requirement of the treatment process.
WHAT IS THE USE OF ANESTHETICS AND WHY?
Usually, local anesthetics are used during a stem cell
procedure to numb the area but sometimes general
anesthesia is also given while extracting the stem cells from
bone marrow. But it is necessary to find out what anesthetic
your doctor uses during orthopedic stem cell treatments. A
number of anesthetics have been found to kill the stem cells
thus; the treatment's end result will greatly depend on the
use of anesthetics. Some anesthetics very well sync with the
stem cell and hence, aid in the treatment.
HOW GOOD ARE THE PROCESSING
TECHNIQUES IN THE ONSITE LABS?
Stem cells are to be extracted and processed in a clean
room, under aseptic conditions maintaining a controlled
environment. The doctor should explain the entire process
and the number of viable stem cells infused into the patient
during the process. Also, the precision of the injections to
provide good quality of stem cells at the site of injury will
help in better and faster recovery of the patient's damaged
area.
DURATION AND COST OF THE THERAPY
Cost of the treatment and its duration varies from one
patient to another. The disease which needs to be cured, the
severity, age factor, health condition, etc, define the
duration of the therapy. One may respond during the
treatment phase itself while the other may show results after
a few sessions or weeks. Depending upon the disease
diagnosed, the stem cells extracted, duration of the therapy,
other adjuvants used in the process, the cost of the stem cell
therapy can vary.
FOLLOW-UP VISITS
It is essential that after the stem cell therapy the patient
should visit the stem cell doctor for recuperation therapies.
The primary goals of such therapy is the prevention of
secondary complications, analysis of recovery of motor,
sensory and all the bodily functioning, psychological
support/counseling for depression, mood swings or anxiety
etc. and reintegration into the community.
There can be different sets of precautions which need to be
followed at various steps for the recovery of the damaged
tissues. The treatment and post treatment conditions may
vary from person to person depending upon the disease and
the severity.
SUCCESS RATE OF STEM CELL THERAPY
Stem cell therapy has shown results in treating serious
ailments like leukemia, grafting tissues, autism, orthopedic
conditions and skin problems etc. Stem Cell Therapy has
been successfully used in the treatment of around 80 serious
disorders. Survival rates among patients who received stem
cell treatment are significantly high, whether the cell donors
are related or unrelated to them. With the ongoing research
around the world, scientists are exploring new possibilities
in which a number of life threatening diseases can be
prevented and cured hence, the stem cells have proved to be
promising in the near future as many aspects are yet to be
revealed.

27. here is no industry in more need of AI & Automation
Tthan healthcare. But we first need to break down
data, and workflow silos.”—Alex Meshkin
Technology has had a remarkable influence on extension
and enrichment of life. Advancement in biomedicine, such
as new drug therapies for auto-immune disorders, and
different cancers; to providing a four-dimensional
diagnosis, robotic surgery to non-invasive imaging; all
these healthcare innovations are having a momentous
impact on both healthcare providers and patients.
Healthcare industry is being engulfed by hot buzzwords like
Machine learning, Artificial intelligence, Deep learning, and
Cognitive computing.
The market has seen a tremendous increase in the adoption
of electronic records by care providers and there is more
usage of connected wearable devices. There seems to be a
strong pipeline of technological progress in the country,
which comprises of lab research, the life sciences industry,
and translational research in academic medicine. This has
made integration of AI in the field of medicine almost
inevitable. AI is ruling the healthcare sector and has taken
over it right from image analysis to data management; it is
reshaping the healthcare sector towards a positive change.
Both robotics and AI are playing a significant role in
progressive development of medicine & patient care, and
has become an active part of the healthcare eco-system.
One thing is for sure, the future of medicine is shifting and
it will encompass additional use of artificial intelligence.
Healthcare Domains that Use Artificial Intelligence
Recently, a report from the Wellcome Trust and Future
Advocacy suggested that AI is here to stay and will
revolutionize the healthcare sector significantly in the
coming years. The report summarizes and examines some
of the possible ethical, social, and political effects AI might
have on the sector. A few spaces of the healthcare sector
that are currently undergoing change are:
AI to Identify & Monitor the Spread of Disease
Certain specialties like Radiation Oncology,
Ophthalmology, and so on, have rapidly advanced
technologically; there is an increased use of AI through
computer mapping. A very low and accurate amount of
radiation is applied to the specific area that needs treatment,
after which the part is subjected to different levels of
radiation. The angles at which the radiation enters the body
are noted, and this information is used by the computer
systems, along with physicist, to strategize a treatment plan
that is complete and tailored to fit the needs of patients.
A great deal of research and work is currently being carried
out by several institutions. This will enable computers to
determine and detect signs of Cancer at an earlier stage,
thereby aiding doctors to use the patient data to make more
personalized treatment choices. The prospective for AI-
enabled technologies to quickly absorb and comprehend
new medical functions, and then analytically provide
doctors with the essential facts and figures, could be
monumental. The prospective applications of AI in
healthcare could perhaps predict future diseases even before
they are manifested, thus improving the eminence of
services for patients.
AI-Assisted Robotic Surgery
A category of AI-assisted robotic surgery was lately used in
orthopedics; to assess data from pre-operative medical
records, to physically guide the surgeon’s tools
simultaneously during a procedure. This technology can
also utilize data from previous surgeries to carry out
informed tasks during the impending one. Ophthalmology
is another medical specialty which is gearing towards AI.
When a person suffering from cataract undergoes surgery,
there are numerous ways in which this can be done, for
example, the recently developed laser technique that create
an incision, and remove the anomaly with simply
programming the machine to do so. The computers also
map out the angles and depth of the areas of the eyes, to
make sure the appropriate depth and angles are adjusted in
the appropriate manner. These instances offer promising
results for the future of medicine.
AI to Make Drug Discovery & Genomic Science more
Operative
When it comes to the use of artificial intelligence, drug
discovery, and clinical trial research are the first things that
come to the mind. With the use of machine learning, early-
stage drug discovery can be carried out. This includes
processes from preliminary screening of drug compounds to
prediction of the success rate based on biological, chemical,
and physical factors. This will enable us to take a step
forward towards precision medicine or personalized
treatment.
AI-Based Fraud detection
Health care organizations and insurers have always
encountered a major issue when it comes to errors and
fraud, which have a negative impact on their budget.
Detection of fraud, traditionally, relied on permutations of
manual reviews & computerization of medical prerogatives.
This was a tedious and time consuming process; it also
hindered the capability of quickly spotting inconsistencies.
Organizations and insurers are now investigating AI-
supported data mining, combined with AI-based neural
networks (that mimic the processes of the human brain, but
rapidly) to search Medicare prerogatives for patterns
concomitant with medical refund fraud.

28. AI to Perform Clinical Work Such As Diagnosis, Prognosis,& Screening
In recent times, there has been a rapid surge in the commercialization of machine learning and big data,
which has helped to bring AI to the vanguard of healthcare and life sciences. This has changed the industries’
diagnoses and treatment procedures, to a great extent. Some examples include diagnosing diseases like
diabetes, cancer, or other chronic conditions. AI and machine-learning could help progress cancer diagnosis
and treatment, to provide more precise and patient-specific diagnosis and prognosis.
AI Power-Driven Virtual Nurse Assistants
The work of a medical nurse is of utmost importance and requires a high level of precision and attention. A
Virtual Nurse Assistant will ease the tedious work of nurses by helping them in monitoring patients,
interacting with them, evaluating the symptoms, and directing the nurses to deliver the most effective care
setting. It is estimated that AI-powered nurse assistants could save around $20 billion every year, by saving
approximately 20% of the time nurses devote towards patient maintenance errands. Although this type of AI
technology is in its nascent stage, it is a powerful tool that is critical to ensure error free patient care.
Where is AI-Based Healthcare Technology Heading?
With AI developing at a surprisingly fast pace, we are currently at the top of the hype cycle, but it is too soon
to tell how the technology would turn out. There are definite areas where AI-based technology can ease the
doctors’ or physicians’ workflow challenges, improve diagnosis and treatment choices, enhance key revenue
cycles, and care administration workflows. Though we are just at the beginning of AI-based future, achieving
these feats will require a several decades at the minimum. It has the capability to transform various major
aspects of healthcare sector; however, the technology is still being validated. And challenges, including
access to data, cost, and simply considering how computers reach conclusions, need to be addressed.
As AI-based technologies develop and become more rampant, healthcare sector will have to invest in these,
so as to deliver the maximum value to its clients. Nonetheless, the AI-based applications that can deliver the
most value today, such as administrative workflow, AI-assisted surgery, virtual nurse, etc. It should be
highlighted and invested in, so that healthcare providers are free to focus on better care.

30. NIRAMAI Health Analytix:
Transforming Healthcare
and Redefining Cancer
Diagnosis
Dr. Geetha Manjunath
Founder, CEO & CTO
The world of science is ever evolving. And, in these
times of change, the question still remains whether
science is a blessing or a curse. The world currently
stands in a position where breast cancer is a rising issue
amongst women. In India alone, approx. 75000 women die
every year of breast cancer. Early detection and regular
screening for high-risk patients is very critical in saving
lives and reducing treatment costs. Lack of awareness,
affordability and accessibility remain as the key challenges
in women hindering their preventive health check-ups.
Preventive healthcare has been around for quite some time
now; and people are still slowly adopting it as a practice.
Though women are at the focal point of many families,
their health has been ignored for centuries in India.
Unfortunately, the most common way of detecting cancer in
current Indian practice is hand examination, and in most
cases it is already very late, before a woman is diagnosed
accidentally through a screening camp. Also, more than
60% of the lumps are harmless – so hand examination
creates unnecessary anxiety and misleads diagnosis.
To overcome such a terrible problem, a team at NIRAMAI
Health Analytix has developed new cancer screening
software that uses machine intelligence over thermal
images to enable a low-cost, easy-to-use, portable solution
that requires minimal human supervision and ensure much
greater precision.
“Sarve Santu Niramaiah” (May everyone be healthy) from
Vedas describes what NIRAMAI is trying to achieve.
NIRAMAI has screened over 3000 women and most of
them are from underprivileged background. Their portable,
low-cost, privacy-aware solution is a great way to take

Efficacious and Humble leader of NIRAMAI
NIRAMAI was instituted by Dr. Geetha Manjunath; she
is currently serving as the CEO and CTO of the company.
She has over 25 years of experience in IT research and has
led many innovative projects in healthcare and
transportation, especially catering to the emerging markets.
She holds a PhD in Computer Science from the Indian
Institute of Science and a Management degree from the
prestigious Kellogg’s School of Management Chicago. This
exceptional education and valued experience of working
with various firms allows Dr. Geetha to provide NIRAMAI
with a very proficient guidance.
She was recently awarded BIRAC WinER Award 2018 for
her Entrepreneurial Research in Biotechnology and has also
won the 2010 MIT Tech Review Grand Challenges for
Technologists in Healthcare category.
Inimitable features of NIRAMAI
NIRAMAI Health Analytix is a health technology startup
developing a novel solution to detect early stage breast
cancer in a completely privacy aware manner. NIRAMAI’s
offerings include a cancer diagnosis solution for Hospitals
and Diagnostic centers, as well as a low cost cancer
screening solution to ensure availability of high quality
healthcare solutions in rural areas through Government and
Non- Profit Organizations.
The traditional diagnosis is carried out by Mammography
machines that are only available in cities and accessible to
only a fraction of the population. The process is also very
expensive, which limits women from undergoing regular
preventive screening for breast cancer. Such test also
renders the patient more susceptible to the disease, due to
the radiation effects of X-Ray.
The core team at NIRAMAI believed in the vision of
solving this important problem in women’s health. It
provides the most privacy aware way of screening for
breast cancer.
The key features of NIRAMAI solutions are:
· Can detect cancer long before a lump is felt.
· No radiation, non-contact, non-invasive, privacy aware
technique.
· Works for women of all ages, and works for men too.
· Affordable, portable, light, small screening device
enables large scale rural screening.
NIRAMAI has successfully filed ten US patents, out of
which five are already granted. It has now successfully
completed two retrospective clinical trials and has made the
solution commercially available in India. DCGI has also
released an official clearance for NIRAMAI breast
screening and diagnostics solution. This makes it an
approved solution for breast screening in India.
Distinct Services provided by NIRAMAI
NIRAMAI has developed a new technique called
TM
Thermalytix , a novel computer-aided diagnosis solution
to identify cancer and tumors in pre-cancerous patients in
an affordable, accessible and effective way. The core of
NIRAMAI software consists of novel computer algorithms,
based on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning over
thermal images.
TM
The process of screening using Thermalytix is very
simple. The patient walks into a private booth, then sits in a
cool room (of about 21-23° C) for about 10-15 minutes, as a
preconditioning. After the cooling procedure, the heat
distribution on her chest is measured using a thermal sensor.
She is instructed to slowly rotate on a stool in front of a
remote thermal sensor to enable five thermal images to be
taken. Then the computer aided diagnostics software
analyses these thermal images to generate a report with
quantified interpretation and identification of potential
malignancies. The interesting part is that this thermal
imaging is done in a privacy sensitive manner.
Promising Future of NIRAMAI and the Healthcare
Startup Industry
Healthcare startup industry is drawing a lot of attention.
From entrepreneurs, investors to customers alike, due to the
huge market potential and ability to make a social impact.
However, it is a very competitive industry for seeking
investments with limited funding; but growing array of
startups providing diverse solutions, addressing problems
with different grades of technical and clinical risks
associated with the technology.
NIRAMAI is a technology-led company that believes in
winning in this rapidly growing industry by expanding its
IP and innovation portfolio, forging mutually beneficial
industry partnerships and working closely together with
domain experts and customers to provide an industry
leading solution. The novel features of NIRAMAI solution
make it a unique product for both end users and healthcare
providers.

the advent of new consumer
technology. This recent disruptive
technology has been promoting greater
patient power. Revolutionizing the way
care is delivered, and in doing so,
transforming societies, is the
opportunity the most lithe and forward-
thinking health economies have.
To strengthen everything from their
brand to the way they deliver their
services, healthcare providers are
consolidating and integrating at a
furious pace, especially clinically. It’s
becoming increasingly commonplace
for patients to be able to access their
records across multiple settings.
Many new information systems,
technologies, and inventions promise
significant benefit and value. Balancing
the ever-increasing technology

The feedback from medical social
worker is also analyzed on monthly
basis. One step further, Care calls are
initiated from corporate office which
are then combined with the feedback..
So there is neck and neck channelized
feedback to ensure patient stay as a
positive memorable experience.
As the technological innovation
evolves, its reach continues to grow,
changing all industries. From patient
registration to data monitoring, from
lab tests to self-care tools, technology
is increasingly playing a role in almost
all processes in healthcare.
Conventional monitoring and
recording systems are being replaced
with devices like smartphones and
tablets and people, now, are provided
with the choice of undergoing a full
consultation in the privacy of their own
homes. Services in healthcare are
integrated with user-friendly,
accessible devices and are being taken
out of the confines of hospital walls
with technological advancements.
However at the other side of the coin,
implementing technology has major
barriers of procurement and
sustainability along with lack of skilled
manpower to adapt to technology &
return of investment in TIER 2 cities.
Organizations must balance the
demands of rapid, technology-intensive
services with quality cost-effective
patient-care, regardless of setting,
practitioner, or payer.

Technology will have a colossal role to play in
healthcare in the coming years by becoming
ubiquitous and more affordable. Several parts of the
healthcare industry will be automated to improve
efficiencies and coverage, all targeted at maximizing the
practitioners’ time spent with patients. Non-core areas like
the supply-chain will get automated first up, followed by
some of the core areas. The biggest challenge in an
outmoded industry like healthcare, especially for tech-
enabled setups is inertia. It takes visionary hospital owners
and managements to acknowledge the need for futuristic
solutions.
PinkBlue.in is India’s first healthcare supply-chain
automation solution provider. It assists hospitals to reduce
their supply-chain costs by 5-15%, through its tech-enabled

healthcare industry, which caters to every type of healthcare
institution – from a small clinic in a tier-3 town through e-
commerce, to the top hospital chains in the country through
its fully automated healthcare supply-chain SaaS solution.
Primarily, it offers the SaaS solution for automating all
actions around the supply-chain inside a hospital – purchase
& consumption of consumables and pharmaceutical
products, called PB Meta.
PinkBlue.in is the leading solution in the industry, to offer a
complete end-to-end manual-entry free supply-chain,
through automated goods receipts; barcode based
dispensing and automated reordering. It works closely with
its clients to ensure accurate consumption tracking, and
automate all other actions around reordering and approvals
on the top of it. PinkBlue supplies all its orders and
products through its commerce arm, to give complete
control over all the parameters to the hospital. Through this,
it saves around 5-15% of the supply-chain costs for most of
its hospital partners.
The company also offers an e-commerce purchase solution
for clinics and small hospitals, where it connects the
manufacturers directly to clinics, allowing the clinics across
the country to get better prices and a wider range of
products, thus removing its clients’ access restrictions. This
enables the smaller hospitals to become more efficient as
well.
Recent Technology Trends in the Industry
Technology plays a massive role in bringing in supply-
chain efficiencies, especially in a complex supply-chain like
that of healthcare. Hospitals find their supply-chain needs to
be somewhere in-between office supplies and industrial raw
materials. In such scenarios, technology plays a massive
role in democratizing smart supply-chain practices,
allowing a mid-sized hospital to bring in similar efficiencies
as a large player through the use of technology.
Technology plays a substantial role in PinkBlue, with most
elements of its operations automated already. Its solution is
built to address this need and make all hospitals more
efficient in handling their supply-chain. It is currently
building AI tools to make its supply-chain decisions
smarter. This has enabled them to build a futuristic supply-

39. Vaccines have been around for over four centuries now. As kids, we have all dreaded the occasional vaccine
shot, but vaccines have become a necessary evil now-a-days. The concept first used by Edward Jenner and
later applied by Louis Pasteur, has now been developed tremendously and used at a large scale to combat
the life threatening diseases that originate every other day.
A biological preparation that provides enhanced and improved immunity towards a particular disease is termed as a
vaccine. A typical vaccine preparation contains a weakened, killed or a part of the disease causing microorganism or
toxins or one of the surface proteins of the same. This agent instigates an immune response in the body that leads to
the recognition of the agent as a foreign agent, after which it is destroyed. The immune system recalls it and easily
recognizes and destroys it during any future encounters.
With recent advancements in science and technology, the field of Vaccinology has also progressed. From the
development of the vaccine to its administration to the patient; there is a high level of precision, scrutiny, and
technology that is being practiced. Vaccines are broadly classified into two groups namely; prophylactic (meaning
to prevent future infections) or therapeutic (meaning to tackle an existing disease, such as cancer, etc.).
Various types of vaccines include inactivated, attenuated, toxoid, subunit, conjugate, experimental, valence, and
heterotypic. These different types of vaccines are categorized on the basis of the strategies that are used to make
them, to reduce the risk of development of certain diseases, and also retaining the ability to induce an immune
response in the future. The most recent advancement in this space, due to the recent biotechnological spurge, has
been the development of Plant based and Recombinant vaccines.
Conventional Way of Vaccine Production: An Overview
The overall vaccine production involves several steps:
Generation of the Antigen (viral component): Over the years, vaccines have been manufactured using fertilized
embryonic eggs and cell cultures (bacterial, yeast, or mammalian).
Plants as Bioreactors
|37| August 2018
40. Using the embryonic egg method
requires a time span of about four
months to produce one batch of
vaccines. It is well established that
safety and effectiveness of the vaccines
produced by the fertilized embryonic
eggs are the two chief advantages that
this method offers.
Another manufacturing process
involves the cell based vaccines, which
uses mammalian cells to culture the
virus. Various sources of mammalian
cell cultures are used for the vaccine
development process. Bacteria cells
grown in bioreactors, these are the
devices that use a specific growth
medium that provides an optimal
environment for the production of the
antigen. Recombinant proteins or
antigens that can be obtained from the
pathogens are further generated using
yeast, bacteria or mammalian cell
cultures.
Release & Isolation of the Antigen:
The next step after the generation of
the antigen is extracting it from the
cells. Numerous levels of purification
and inactivation are required to
generate pure recombinant of proteins
and antigens.
Addition of Supplementary
Constituents: The vaccine is finally
formulated by adding stabilizers,
adjuvant, and preservatives as
desirable. The adjuvant intensifies the
immune response of the antigen, while
stabilizers increase the shelf life and
preservatives enable the use of multi-
dose vials.
The above described cell-based
processes have various advantages
over the fertilized embryonic eggs
cultures, such as:
Ÿ It enhances the capability of
companies to scale up vaccine
production easily, within a short time
frame
Ÿ It reduces the possibility of the virus
culture mutation during the
production process. The virus
mutation probability increases when
we use the embryonic eggs, and the
entire batch can go to waste.
Ÿ Also, people allergic to vaccines
manufactured from chicken eggs
may suffer from allergies to the
vaccines
These positives provide a potential
candidate process for development of
vaccines. But, culturing of cells
requires relatively higher
manufacturing costs. This leads to the
increase in the costs of the vaccines,
which is a disadvantage for the masses.
Although the cell based process
provides a fourfold higher yield than
the embryonic egg, the volumetric
increase in the process requires
voluminous bioreactors. The capital
investment for these is much higher
than the investment required for the
production of plant based vaccines.
Plants as Bio-factories for Vaccine
Production
A significant number of drugs that we
use have been derived from plants for
centuries, which subsequently led to
pharmaceutical industry chemically
synthesizing medical compounds.
However, the recent development and
progress in the field of transgenic
plants has led the researchers to pay
more and more attention towards
plants being looked upon as potential
bio-reactors or bio-factories for the
production of immunotherapeutic
molecules. There are numerous
advantages that plant based vaccines
provide, the chief one being the
reduced cost of production, which
eventually leads to low priced
vaccines. Transgenic plants provide an
excellent and promising expression
system for the production of the
vaccines. Currently, complex plants
like tomato, tobacco, and banana are
being modified and used to produce
usable vaccines for humans.
Why do we need to use Plant
Vaccines?
There are numerous advantages of
Plant based vaccines which sets them
apart and makes them more cost
effective. Transgenic material is
basically a seed or a fruit, or any part
of the plant that can be easily stored
and transported from one place to
another. This cuts down the fear of its
degradation or damage. They allow a
large amount of bio-mass to be
effortlessly produced by cultivation in
fields with relatively very few inputs.
Several different products can be
produced at a time using transgenic
plants.
The most important advantage is that
the plant system does not harbor
human pathogens (such as virions or
prions) and, thus, they transmit the
target subunit vaccine without any
contamination. Moreover, plants can be
grown in the field or in a greenhouse
comparatively inexpensively, and do
not require any expensive equipment
like fermenters and bioreactors.
The vaccine components can be
produced in the edible parts of the
plant, such as grain, fruit or even
leaves, cutting down the requirement
of the purification process, thus
increasing the stability and reducing
the degradation of the antigenic
protein. Production of the vaccine
subunit in the edible parts of the plant
has an added advantage, since it is
delivered orally rather than
intramuscularly, offering a simple and
non-invasive means of administration
to humans. In addition, the reduced
cost of vaccinations and their
minimalistic storage requirements are
often necessary in developing
countries; e.g., sterile syringes are not
required.

India has over a lakh of healthcare
providers including multi-speciality
hospitals, government hospitals,
nursing homes, clinics and primary
care centres. There are more than 60%
of them that operate without any IT
system or have even basic
digitalisation in place.
Hospitals today have a critical need to
make information accessible, secure,

the hospitals to have a system in place
to quickly process the claims, speed-up
treatment initiation and eliminate
fraudulent claims.
There has been significant advance in
