Aheer Transportation
Group:
Ocean freight is a dynamic market. The giant
container ships that transport everything from
garments to Barbie dolls to strawberries around the
globe, is booming day by day. Same is the case with the
companies that own them. And this million- dollar industry
is achieving newer heights every single day with digital
innovations.
About the Company
“Nothing of worth was ever accomplished without
enthusiasm!”, this quote by the great litterateur Samuel
Johnson is the inspiration behind the success of Aheer
Transportation Group. The enthusiastic team at the
organization works towards emerging as a valuable vendor,
ally and partner of any client facing uncertainty with the
Canadian economy. The team is working with Canadian
Importers and Exporters in the Port Vancouver market. This
asset-based company, founded in 1993, is totally Canadian
owned and operated by Shinda Aheer and his family.
A Brief Glimpse of its Services
Aheer owns the 15 acres of Prime Industrial Real Estate on
River Road in Delta. Besides its Real Estate base, the
Group consists of several operating divisions:
Aheer Transportation Ltd. (non-union)
Burton Delivery Service Ltd. (Teamsters Local 31)
Triangle Transportation Ltd (Flatdeck Division, Teamsters
Local 31)
AG Transport Ltd (UNIFOR)
Pacific Transportation Group (PTG)
Dayal Transport Ltd.
Together we total over 80 Tractors and 800+ Chassis, on the
road hauling their clients’ import and export cargoes.
In addition to its considerable throwing weight in the Ocean
Container Drayage Sector of the Port Vancouver market, the
Aheer Group has diversified into Ocean Container Handling
and Storage Operations over the past five years.
Aheer CY Yard Terminal located at 8713 River Road, Delta

and Maersk Line’s dry boxes. Aheer’s Lift Capacity is north
of 80,000 lbs and the company has the newest Hyster Top-
Pick units in the Port Vancouver market. While Ocean
Container Drayage remains the Aheer Group’s primary
activity, the Equipment Handling and Storage Division is
gaining ground rapidly. Aheer has a second CY Yard, sub-
leased from Vancouver Fraser Port’s Real Estate Division
which totals over 3 acres at 10008 River Road, Delta,
Aheer’s “Nordel Yard”.
On the Drayage side, qualitatively, it’s worth mentioning
that Aheer Transportation Ltd.is the designated Ocean
Container Drayage provider for Canada Post Corporation.
As such, and in dealing with a quasi-Government agency
like CPC, all of Aheer’s drivers have been vetted by Canada
Post Security in Ottawa, including criminal checks, finger-
printing, etc. The CEO of the company feels proud to have
this Canadian Government Security designation as it
underscores the quality of driver that he has been hired over
the years. Let’s meet the acclaimed navigator…
The word ‘Proficient’ defines him
The President and CEO of Aheer Transportation Group,
Shinda Aheer moved to Canada from Punjab, India, when
he was only ten years old, the youngest of four brothers.
After attending school, Shinda became a very proficient
Tractor Driver, hauling Heavy Steel, Aluminum Products,
as well as Ocean Containers and General LTL Freight. In
1992, when the company he was driving for was on the
verge of drowning, Shinda made a pact with the largest
client, a prolific Aluminum Can manufacturer and re-
enlivened the company.
Gradually, Shinda built an asset-based, multi-faceted
company that most recently has accelerated its growth via
the acquisition of smaller competitors in the Ocean
Container Drayage sector.
His entrepreneurial skills continue to flourish with the
recent purchases of Pacific Transportation Group and Dayal
Transport Ltd. just over the past ten months.

Loyalty is a two-way virtue. Shinda still counts on many of
his original drivers from the beginnings, as longstanding
employees to this day.
Loyalty also is evident on the commercial side as most of
Shinda’s customers have been with the company, literally
for decades. On the Import side with longtime Freight
Forwarder supportes like db Schenker and on the Export
side with Canadian produces like Catalyst Paper and Interex
Forest Products, the clients tend to stay with Aheer through
thick and thin.
Shinda Aheer is a very proud as well as grateful Canadian
who wants to give back to the nation that accepted him as a
young boy. To wit, Shinda is an active participant in
Charities, philanthropic deeds like the BC Children’s
Hospital, the United Way, and many more. Reflecting on his
cultural ethics, Shinda’s generosity is legendary for
donating funds, equipment, and manpower to help bring
success to many annual Indo-Canadian Festivals, Parades,
and other Sikh Temple events. Shinda believes in giving
back to the Communities he belongs to, both to the
Canadian and the Indo-Indian organizations who reach out
to him for assistance.

Regulated Environment like Trucking, contacts with the
three levels of Government, Port Metro Vancouver, the new
Office of the BC Container Trucking Commissioner, the BC
Trucking Association and other NGOs have been
established. The entire staff of the company thrives for
excellence by exceeding the customer expectation.
Safety- the Primary Focus
Trucking is rightly designated as a regulated industry in
Canada and the Aheer Group recognizes the need for Safety
Regulations that ensure the safe and secure movement of
their clients’ cargoes on Canada’s Public Roadways that are
also used by the Canadian public. Safety has always been
the Aheer Group’s primary focus throughout the company’s
history.
Aheer’s standings have always been top-drawer vis- a- vis:
National Safety Code;
BC WorkSafe Compliance;
Insurance Compliancy;
Port Vancouver Truck License Compliance;
BC Trucking Association
“Historically, safety has been viewed as a responsibility we
owed to our Customers, to our Employees, and to our
fellow Canadians…..and Safety will continue to be
so…..first and foremost in our dealings and operations
going forward!”, ends Shinda on a bright tone.

Banyan Technology:
Application Program Interface or APIs have sparked
the logistics industry with its unparalleled
significance. Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio,
Banyan Technology is North America’s leading provider
of live carrier and API connectivity for transportation
management. Introducing itself as a pioneer in the realm,
the company introduced API carrier connectivity to the
transport industry more than a decade ago. With more than
1,400 carrier connections and 33,000 client locations
accessing the application, Banyan Technology provides
commercial shippers, brokers, and 3PLs with unparalleled
access to carrier data. These connections boost efficiency,
improve visibility, and deliver permanent reductions in
shipping costs.
Exclusive Services and Strategies
Banyan Technology, the leading provider of live carrier and
API connectivity for transportation management, recently
announced its latest expansion to include live connectivity
to more than 1,000 local carriers throughout the U.S. and
Canada. This latest enhancement comes as a result of
significant industry demand to gain live connectivity and
visibility into local carriers through a single set of APIs.
As the first platform to bring live carrier connectivity to the
transportation management industry, expanding
connectivity to capture local carrier data allows Banyan
Technology to offer insights into the full shipping process –
from the first mile to the final mile. This new connectivity
imparts the same level of automation to first and last mile
that Banyan has delivered for more than a decade to the
LTL, TL and parcel market.
This comprehensive, live connectivity to local carrier
shipments allows shippers to rate, book, and track both
pickup and delivery of their first and last mile services.
Pioneering LIVE Data Connectivity
Through this connectivity, users will gain insight into
pickup and delivery information in previously niche
markets, including residential, rural, and metropolitan areas
as well as warehouses, facilities, and distribution centers.
Local carrier connections span across multiple carrier
platforms and provide users with increased visibility in
order to ensure the highest standard of performance.
“We’re excited to integrate live connectivity to local
carriers, as this gives our users a greater level of visibility
into the entire shipping process that they have never
experienced before,” asserts Brian. He resumes, “With
greater access to real-time data from local carriers, we’re
confident that organizations will experience a boost in both
productivity and profitability while ensuring customer
satisfaction throughout the shipping process.”
By utilizing Banyan Technology, organizations will
experience a faster, more convenient shipping experience
by eliminating the task of manual data entry. With
connections to more than 1,400 LTL, TL and parcel
carriers, and now more than 1,000 local carriers, shippers
can utilize live connectivity through Banyan’s API to make
better informed decisions based on real-time data at all
levels of the shipping process.
Benefits for Clients
The customers of Banyan Technology benefit from live
pricing, constant visibility of freight movement, and
automated freight bill auditing. They pay less to move
freight. They make better, more informed decisions. Apart
from that, Banyan enables its users do more — faster than
they ever imagined.
The industry recognizes the value of the technology, with
over 33,000 client sites accessing the Banyan application,

and very recent entrants vying for the API space.
Opportunities and Challenges
Data source connectivity demands on BI and AI play into
users feeding information into their systems. This is indeed
necessary to increase the productivity as an added resource
of information they may not already have. Thus, the
company is growing as a result of the Industry embracing
the new technology.
Banyan’s main challenge is in assisting the clients to see
that they have an existing or pending problem and then
helping them resolve it. Creative approaches were taken by
the company to explain and resolve problems that the client
might encounter in a few years down the road.
Future Roadmap
Banyan’s combination of industry-leading innovation and
the resulting impact to the freight industry creates a
sustainable and exponentially growing business, primarily
due to the overwhelming business opportunity to establish
live connectivity across all shippers, 3PLs, brokers, and
carriers.
Banyan will continue to enhance the platform based upon
the market demands by offering game changers like Local
Carrier, UPS Capital Insurance, expanded parcel by offering

compliance.
The Leader with a Revolutionary Zeal
Brian Smith, CEO of Banyan Technology, is leading the
Senior Management Team to drive an industry revolution
replacing the age-old technology with live connectivity. In
his short time at the helm, Banyan has accelerated hiring
across all departments, completed a full company rebrand,
and secured $7 million in a recent equity funding and
financing round. Prior to joining Banyan Technology, Smith
led an international based distributor of Print and
Promotional items from $40 mm to $400 million.
This proven track record of translating vision into result-
oriented execution is the definite reason why the Banyan
Board of Directors brought Smith in, in early 2016, as
CEO.
“I joined Banyan because I wanted to be part of an amazing
technology company with a proven track record and high
potential for fast growth,” Smith says, “ Banyan has been
far ahead of the curve in terms of leveraging technology for
the real-time exchange of data.”

Digitaligital technologies have saturated and disordered almost all segments, and logistics companies are no exception.
DIntegrating the optimization and efficiency in speed and seizing the moment are the keys to success in today’s
extremely competitive business market. The developing technology is the key enabler allowing companies to realize
these aspects. Logistics and transportation are regarded as the backbone of the economy, providing an efficient and cost-
effective flow of goods on which other commercial sectors depend. The logistics industry is evolving globally; it is the
combination of infrastructure, technology and new types of service providers. This defines whether the logistics industry is
able to help its customers with cost-effective operations and effective services.
Leveraging Technology
An Independent analysis reveals that the transportation and logistics companies are increasing revenue and working with the
vision to standardize and streamline structures and processes. They are leveraging technology for developing industry
oriented and innovative solutions. They have a strong belief that technology is the key enabler for strategic planning.

On an average, transportation and logistics enterprises invest about five percent of their annual returns in digital operations,
majorly focusing on digitizing their customer interface. The thrust these days is exclusively on mobile apps and solutions
that offer a personalized experience for their customers. However, the majority of the companies are increasingly using
digital technology to expose new business models, dedicated to the establishment of value-added services and innovative
solutions.
Logistics companies are leveraging technology not just to improve the efficiency of operations, but also to transform the way
operations take place. The use of robots in giant warehouses is already well-known, as is the driverless, remote-controlled
vehicles. Technology drives a swing to a customer gripped operating model, allowing the delivery of personalized and
customer-focused logistics, with immediate and faster cycle times.
Improve Operations through Big Data
The development of the technology influences the algorithms to crunch Big Data, unlocking acumens and opportunities that
were not possible earlier. These insights are enabling streamline operations and optimization of the supply chain. The

automation based on data, mainly automated load structure and augmenting the inbound and outbound movement of
cargo, enables the optimal use of existing resources. This reduces the generation of the waste and facilitates lean
operations.
Mobile solutions enable greater transparency into the logistics operations. Effective simultaneous fleet management
solution paves a creative way for uberization of trucks and other delivery vehicles. An all-inclusive data based catalog
and supply chain management system exposes silos and eases end-to-end visibility to inventory, orders, and shipments
across the supply chain. This type of transparency improves the operations associated with locating the inventory
movement. Also, reduces the network-wide inventory levels, and enable managers to respond dynamically and in real-time
to each and every event or issue that disturbs the supply chain.
Analytical data and information generates explicit greenhouse discharges and carbon footprints of truck and machinery
maneuvers. This permits the organizations to take steps to become a carbon-neutral organization, thereby supporting
Green logistics. The integration of machine learning in supply chain management empowers turning piles of passive data
into actionable BI.
Enhancing the Security
The disruption in the supply chain creates global business risks for logistics companies. Besides, technology enables
revitalizing the supply chain in many ways. Digital locks upsurge the security high grounds of the inventory, offering
robust layers of security in association with the physical security. The planning of optimum route in combination with
real-time tracking of the cargo movement through the mobile apps proves essential in navigation, avoids congestion points
and minimizes risks.
Influence of IoT
The IoT has been a vital entity for logistics and transportation organizations. Integration of IoT in the logistics is
extremely contributing to warehouse management solutions, enabling precision movement and accurate tracking and
packaging of goods. The implementation of IoT gadgets in logistics is fundamentally endless, ranging from tracking the
packaged and transported goods in a temperature- controlled manner for ensuring the correct package reaches the correct
setting at the specified time and more.
Future Roadmap
The next big thing to arise in the transportation and logistics industries is the extreme and innovative use of drones. This
extensive use of drones would bring rapidity in things considerably, decrease the hassles, strain and provide with efficient
and cost-effective operations in transportation and logistics companies.
The logistics industry continues to witness growth due to the growth in retail, e-commerce and manufacturing segments.
This industry is expected to reach over two billion USD in the coming decade. Escalation of e-commerce logistics and
increased domestic consumption will lead ways towards the industrial revolution in the coming years. With a potential to
grow and improve, the service-oriented logistics industry is ready to swell beyond the horizons in the near future.
In addition, the developments in the instant future will include connected and autonomous trucks, warehouse robotics, and
smart warehouse solutions. This will speed up the logistics industry operations, and improve their accuracy and efficiency.

The Logistics Industry is a key segment in several
world economies, including that of the United
States.
Using a study from AT Kearney, it accounted for about
7.5% of GDP in 2016. The Logistics industry is made up of
several subsegments including:
Ÿ Motor Carriers e.g. JB Hunt, Old Dominion
Ÿ Parcel Delivery e.g. Fed Ex, UPS
Ÿ Rail e.g. CSX, Norfolk Southern
Ÿ Container Shipping e.g. Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd
Ÿ Air Freight e.g. DHL, Martinair
Ÿ Pipeline companies e.g. Enbridge, Kinder Morgan
Ÿ Freight Forwarders e.g. Kuehne+Nagel, Sinotrans
Ÿ Third Party Logistics e.g. CH Robinson, XPO Logistics
Ÿ Warehousing Companies e.g. Ryder, Geodis
Many of the players in the above list bleed over into the
other segments and offer a broad product mix.
Technology has continued to be the catalyst for change in
the Logistics industry. New business models are being
constantly developed and driving the industry towards a
flexible, connected, optimized supply chain. Customer
expectations also continue to evolve with a greater need for
immediacy, convenience and personalization at the core.
AI, IoT, and Blockchain technologies have a major role to
play in this evolution.
Logistics, in general, involves a Chain of Custody where
goods change hands between multiple parties. For instance,
a Seller in China wishes to ship goods to a Buyer in the US.
It is very likely that in this scenario the goods e.g. a
Container will go through several intermediaries e.g.
trucking companies, shipping companies before reaching
the buyer.
At present, most of this journey is fairly opaque in that once
the goods leave the custody of the Sender, there is very little
insight as to its status until it arrives at the Buyer. When
single companies handle the entire shipment e.g. FedEx,
DHL etc then there is slightly more visibility through
mobile notifications and web based tracking via tracking
numbers. But when multiple carriers are involved, tracing
and tracking becomes exponentially more difficult and is
not being handled most effectively at present.
Enter Blockchain to the rescue. Blockchain is a form of

Distributed Ledger technology may be just what the doctor ordered when it comes to improving the transparency in the
Logistics industry. Blockchain technology provides a transparent, tamper proof, and immutable ledger – three properties
which could help mitigate several of the inefficiencies in Logistics.
Before we examine Blockchain in detail, let us quickly list some of the common issues faced in Logistics:
Ÿ Inefficiency e.g. goods not arriving on time
Ÿ Loss e.g. goods perishing enroute due to improper handling
Ÿ Theft e.g. goods being stolen due to lack of security measures
Ÿ Counterfeiting e.g. goods being replaced with counterfeit goods
Ÿ Fraud e.g. document fraud where documents such as bill of lading are modified
With this context in mind, let us study how Blockchain can help in Logistics. First, blockchain technology is extremely
useful in ecosystems involving multiple players who work with one another but there may be trust issues. The Logistics
ecosystem easily qualifies in this regard. Second, most of what ails the ecosystem is a lack of accountability which is
brought about by the lack of transparency. For instance, in the chain of custody, if all the ecosystem participants have
their own information silos (either automated or otherwise), then there is a lack of a common set of truths or a common
system of record. This leads to inefficiency, errors, and even fraud. Third, compound this already maligned ecosystem by
saddling it customer requirements such as cold chain shipments where temperature has to be maintained within specific
thresholds e.g. pharmaceuticals or wine.
In all three cases, Blockchain is a perfect fit. First, it helps all ecosystem participants’ work off of the same data by
sharing data across trust boundaries breaking down the silos on information. Second, when coupled with IoT technology
for real time data acquisition, blockchain can be used for governance and accountability in Chain of Custody situations.
For instance, in a cold chain shipment, one can easily ascertain which party was responsible for a shipping container
while in transit when the temperature gauge reading went outside of the preset thresholds.
Blockchain promises to be a game changing technology and something that is a very good fit for the Logistics business
and all of its complexity.

OUT-OF-THE-BOX STRATEGIES THAT DELIVERS
EXCEPTIONAL SERVICES
Customers want seamless, better experiences when it comes
to their online & offline purchases and the delivery of those.
This has resulted in a butterfly effect, as other segments of
the industry have needed to be improved too.
Simultaneously, the industry has to leverage the available
resources (human resource especially) intelligently.
PTG anticipated these needs and have incorporated use of
latest smart technology in their business operations.
For instance, Smart Robotics Automation and Machine
Learning help them to relieve their internal labor force of
repetitive and heavy administrative processing and hence
provide the Staff the opportunities to grow and manage the
smart processing that a robot can’t do. Reason being, it may
be overly complex or needs the human relationship
interaction. This inevitably will enhance the overall client
satisfaction and experience.
Logistics companies have more data available than ever
before, however, they have to make better sense of it.
PTG has a perfect strategy which will embrace the Block
Chain fabric paired with Seamless Data Exchange
integrations (API’s, EDI, SFTP), helping leverage the data
for analysis, audit affirmations, and insightful transparency
reducing reliance on heavy administrative efforts and
focusing more on moving freight, will be the byproducts.

of goods and shipments have been implemented by Polaris
Transportation Group. Working in tandem with their
partners and tech vendors, Polaris aims to provide the most
robust integrated route optimization and tracking systems.
Dave states, “By enabling these technologies, doing
business, will now be the way it should be. The industry will
go through a significant change from the way it does
business today, however, it will make sense and become a
simpler process overall. The old adage ‘ask and you shall
receive’ will become a reality, we are getting there with the
likes of Google Home and Alexa.”
CHALLENGES BRING OPPORTUNITIES
Challenge is the pathway to engagement & progress and an
integral part of any business. For Dave, the challenge is the
adoptions and the willingness to trust and cooperatively
work with all types of business partners, competitors,
vendors, clients, etc.
“Providing the tech will be the easier part, it will be the
change management and industry adoption that will be
more of the tricky part, however, that’s what good leaders
are for! They motivate, direct and make things happen.
Let’s get our leaders in the industry pushing us to the next
level of transformation, with a little help from our
governing bodies,” expressed Dave.
While sharing his thoughts on present opportunities, Dave
speaks, “Our motto is to be the strongest link in our clients
supply chain and to enhance our internal staff’s growth and
performance values. Working smarter by supervising
systems is way better than, working harder and having the
systems manage the people.”
“By investing and deploying smarter technologies we are
then constantly improving on our core values in enhancing
the client experience and providing our people a higher
degree of value to the overall process.”
FUTURE ROADMAP
Recent studies, have predicted the future of global logistics
and shipping industry to be challenging but bright.
“Polaris is focused on technologies such as blockchain,
enhanced robotic processing, chatbots, dynamic delivery
management to help with customer service, enhancing our
front facing user interfaces, seamless integrations with our
partners and clients. But most of all we want to ensure that
we are focused on the most important and precious freight
and that is our people and our families,” asserts the CEO.
The ultimate long-term goal of the logistics companies is to
build and implement intelligent, digitalized solutions for
efficient operations and customer satisfaction and to be able
to shift and align in the global competition. The Race is on!

orporations work very hard to provide the best customer services. Logistics is such one service. These
companies manage the flow of things between the origin and the terminating end to provide necessary
products and services to meet the requirement of other corporations and industries. These companies
have huge responsibilities on their shoulders. They have to manage their fleets, both tracking and platooning, and
have to deliver goods in time with utmost care and most importantly, with agility. The day-by-day evolution of
technology gives the companies an ultimatum; “Transform or be terminated”. Companies like Amazon are front-
runners in accepting the new trends in logistics. Their tested drones delivered goods over the air, emitting the
long ordeals of traffic. It would be tremendous to see Amazon turning the “same day delivery” into “same hour
delivery”.
The involvement of the Autonomous vehicles
An autonomous vehicle is not an unheard term anymore. These vehicles eradicate the need of a physical driver
thus improving the overall delivery time. Vehicles like these can map their route in advance and can improvise it
based on the requirement of situations like change in traffic, weather, and accident-prone areas. These
autonomous vehicles are better coordinated and would have seamless and frictionless delivery process. Further,
these automobiles can go to areas where humans face difficulties in reaching. Citizens of rural and low density
areas, often have to compromise either with the delivery duration or in order to receive their product, they have
to a reach a recognisable landmark themselves. These vehicles can go anywhere and can deliver materials to
anyone. Robots and AI-powered forklifts will aid in loading and unloading of freights. The human handling and
consolidation of load will be minimised. Shipping agents will be able to supervise the loading and unloading of
freights from an appropriate safe distance.

3D Printing
This revolutionary technology will impact the way products are produced. The product will not have to be manufactured
halfway across the planet. The product will be manufactured near the user/customer, thus eliminating moving costs and
saving time. As the process involve saving the data in digital form, the spare parts can be printed on demands,
eliminating the need to administer the overall inventory status. Virtually, the spare parts will never go out of stock and
can be produced at the demanding time. Furthermore, the companies will be able to customise the product as per
customer’s requirement, even if the product is in its production pipeline.
The interconnected web
By upcoming decade, internet will consist of extensive fiber and fast broadband capabilities. This high-speed internet will
be coupled with connected sensors capable of detecting and monitoring traffic, regulation on heavy-duty vehicles, etc.
This technology will further be installed in autonomous vehicles for location monitoring and in providing routing
information. The revamped internet will also support the internet of things (IoT). By using IoT, the data can be
transferred over any network. Monitoring of staff, employees, and equipment will be much easier. The overall
performance of machines, equipment, energy consumption, inventory status, and material flow will be boosted.
Guiding the way- Augmented reality
Augmented reality will simulate real-life situation by computer-generated sensory inputs. Additional inputs, such as
wearable, handheld devices, and drones will assist in supervising in calamity-prone scenarios. These devices will help in
generating holograms that can be extremely helpful. In several scenarios, supervisors can virtually see the variables that
can happen in accident-prone situations. AR will inform supervisors, the miscalculations and the probable outcome of
such miscalculations. AR will scan the cargo in freight loading and can help in placing them properly. In simple terms,
remedies can be applied every time before any problem arises. This artificial reality will further assist in monitoring the
inventory, employees, reading barcodes, and recognizing products thus eliminating the existing paper-based process.
The Uber of trucks
There are several companies testing out the “Uber” like applications to transport goods. This helps companies in
outsourcing their transportation to other drivers. The software provides a direct link for truckers to connect with shippers
who want to move their loads. The main purpose is to remove the third-party brokers between the truckers and shippers.
By eliminating the middleman, expenses are saved. These applications will feature online maps and GPS for their exact
route. These apps will monitor exact distance and arrival times, eliminating paper, phone, fax and price haggling issues.
Technology on its way
The evolving trends in logistics technology will definitely help in improving the transportation of resources. The
transportation management systems will be live, dispatches will be autonomous, freight and fleet tracking will be
extremely accurate, back office efficiency, routing, tracking, and blockchain business will be improved. By using AI and
robotics, inventory status, management, supply chain design and modeling tools will be monitored. The list goes on and
on. Some hurdles involved in this industry are the minimal use of such technologies. Only 3% companies are using 3D
printing. Augmented reality is yet to fully function to secure its place in the market. The internet needs more
cybersecurity. Cyber-attacks happen commonly nowadays and privacy has always been a concern. Some CEOs suggests
that autonomous vehicle are essential, but the human element should not be eliminated. However, the everyday changing
technology will definitely overcome such obstacles and it’s easy to say that the ‘future of logistics technology is shipped
on time and will be delivered to industries on the exact estimated day’.

echnology in business continues to evolve and
Tdisrupt major companies and markets. If you need
confirmation of that point, just look at the top 10
retailers fifteen years ago compared to today's list. Nearly
all the largest retailers from a bygone era have either closed
or filed for bankruptcy. They have been replaced by an
online retail model that emphasizes convenience and nearly
unlimited options. Think about what Uber has done to the
taxi industry, or Facebook to the advertising market. Yes,
technology is not only here to stay, but will continue to
influence nearly every part of our lives, and business is not
immune.
In fact, for business, it becomes even more imperative to
stay attuned to these changes and differentiate between
passing fads versus a truly transformative technology. One
such example has been the introduction of blockchain,
originally devised for the digital currency, Bitcoin. The
blockchain technology has since exploded with a vast
number of other potential uses and varying platforms.
However, many main stream businesses have been very
slow to adopt this technology, often taking a wait and see
mentality. And rightly so, if a company is not careful, they
could recklessly spend substantial resources, time and
money, pursuing a technology that could ultimately be a
passing fad. Or worse, bet on a technology that the market
doesn't assimilate and find them with a worthless platform.
Blockchain, however, in many ways is revolutionary. It
doesn’t address make believe problems or over exaggerated
inconveniences, but rather, the real-world challenge that
nearly every transaction involves, that of trust and
incorruptible data. Yes, every transaction of value has the
potential to be corrupted or compromised in today’s digital
world. Therein lies the genius of blockchain. It is a
decentralized digital ledger that can guarantee the validity
of a transaction through it distributed registers and secure
validation mechanism. Simply put, it brings the highest
level of accountability to every transaction. With such an
essential key attribute, how could blockchain be anything
other than a revolutionary new technology that will
eventually need to be embraced?
It's been with this core belief, that MGN Logistics, based
out of Easton, Pennsylvania has been pushing forward with
the logistics industries first blockchain based Transportation
Management System (TMS). An early adaptor of web-
based technology and one of the first companies to launch a
fully automated on-line freight platform called
LogisticsQuote, MGN has continued to bring to market
cutting edge technology for the transportation space. These
innovations include its' award winning TMS, big data
truckload and LTL pricing apps, sophisticated business
intelligence KPIs and hundreds of API connections. The
company has grown organically and through a series of
private party acquisitions, including offices in
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Michigan,
Florida, and the Dominican Republic.
The company’s current undertaking entails utilizing
blockchain's incorruptible ledger to synthesize with
transportation related transactions. With many
transportation processes still being very manual and the
high level of human error or even fraud in the market place,
MGN felt it was ripe timing to introduce a new robust TMS
that offered its users and those interfaced with a higher level
of accountability, true end to end visibility and greater
degree of automation. While several companies in the
space have been focused on the international application,
MGN has concentrated on the domestic LTL and truckload
markets where their blockchain technology would be first to
market.
Today, with fraudulent double brokered loads on the rise,
and shippers losing visibility into this process, we envision
a platform that would end double payments for loads that
have been delivered. We are creating a technology; we
believe will end the insanity of tending a load of value to a
carrier or broker with potentially little or no validation of
who they are. We are creating a platform based on
blockchain technology that will provide the most secure
transportation transactions on earth. And we have a track
record of not just talking or envisioning but delivering on
those innovations.

  • 20. Aheer Transportation Group: Ocean freight is a dynamic market. The giant container ships that transport everything from garments to Barbie dolls to strawberries around the globe, is booming day by day. Same is the case with the companies that own them. And this million- dollar industry is achieving newer heights every single day with digital innovations. About the Company “Nothing of worth was ever accomplished without enthusiasm!”, this quote by the great litterateur Samuel Johnson is the inspiration behind the success of Aheer Transportation Group. The enthusiastic team at the organization works towards emerging as a valuable vendor, ally and partner of any client facing uncertainty with the Canadian economy. The team is working with Canadian Importers and Exporters in the Port Vancouver market. This asset-based company, founded in 1993, is totally Canadian owned and operated by Shinda Aheer and his family. A Brief Glimpse of its Services Aheer owns the 15 acres of Prime Industrial Real Estate on River Road in Delta. Besides its Real Estate base, the Group consists of several operating divisions: Aheer Transportation Ltd. (non-union) Burton Delivery Service Ltd. (Teamsters Local 31) Triangle Transportation Ltd (Flatdeck Division, Teamsters Local 31) AG Transport Ltd (UNIFOR) Pacific Transportation Group (PTG) Dayal Transport Ltd. Together we total over 80 Tractors and 800+ Chassis, on the road hauling their clients’ import and export cargoes. In addition to its considerable throwing weight in the Ocean Container Drayage Sector of the Port Vancouver market, the Aheer Group has diversified into Ocean Container Handling and Storage Operations over the past five years. Aheer CY Yard Terminal located at 8713 River Road, Delta is the designated CY Yard for all of Hamburg-Sud Line’s The Leader with Excellence in the Ocean Freight Industry and Maersk Line’s dry boxes. Aheer’s Lift Capacity is north of 80,000 lbs and the company has the newest Hyster Top- Pick units in the Port Vancouver market. While Ocean Container Drayage remains the Aheer Group’s primary activity, the Equipment Handling and Storage Division is gaining ground rapidly. Aheer has a second CY Yard, sub- leased from Vancouver Fraser Port’s Real Estate Division which totals over 3 acres at 10008 River Road, Delta, Aheer’s “Nordel Yard”. On the Drayage side, qualitatively, it’s worth mentioning that Aheer Transportation Ltd.is the designated Ocean Container Drayage provider for Canada Post Corporation. As such, and in dealing with a quasi-Government agency like CPC, all of Aheer’s drivers have been vetted by Canada Post Security in Ottawa, including criminal checks, finger- printing, etc. The CEO of the company feels proud to have this Canadian Government Security designation as it underscores the quality of driver that he has been hired over the years. Let’s meet the acclaimed navigator… The word ‘Proficient’ defines him The President and CEO of Aheer Transportation Group, Shinda Aheer moved to Canada from Punjab, India, when he was only ten years old, the youngest of four brothers. After attending school, Shinda became a very proficient Tractor Driver, hauling Heavy Steel, Aluminum Products, as well as Ocean Containers and General LTL Freight. In 1992, when the company he was driving for was on the verge of drowning, Shinda made a pact with the largest client, a prolific Aluminum Can manufacturer and re- enlivened the company. Gradually, Shinda built an asset-based, multi-faceted company that most recently has accelerated its growth via the acquisition of smaller competitors in the Ocean Container Drayage sector. His entrepreneurial skills continue to flourish with the recent purchases of Pacific Transportation Group and Dayal Transport Ltd. just over the past ten months. • 25. On an average, transportation and logistics enterprises invest about five percent of their annual returns in digital operations, majorly focusing on digitizing their customer interface. The thrust these days is exclusively on mobile apps and solutions that offer a personalized experience for their customers. However, the majority of the companies are increasingly using digital technology to expose new business models, dedicated to the establishment of value-added services and innovative solutions. Logistics companies are leveraging technology not just to improve the efficiency of operations, but also to transform the way operations take place. The use of robots in giant warehouses is already well-known, as is the driverless, remote-controlled vehicles. Technology drives a swing to a customer gripped operating model, allowing the delivery of personalized and customer-focused logistics, with immediate and faster cycle times. This reduces the generation of the waste and facilitates lean operations. Mobile solutions enable greater transparency into the logistics operations. Effective simultaneous fleet management solution paves a creative way for uberization of trucks and other delivery vehicles. An all-inclusive data based catalog and supply chain management system exposes silos and eases end-to-end visibility to inventory, orders, and shipments across the supply chain. This type of transparency improves the operations associated with locating the inventory movement. Also, reduces the network-wide inventory levels, and enable managers to respond dynamically and in real-time to each and every event or issue that disturbs the supply chain. Analytical data and information generates explicit greenhouse discharges and carbon footprints of truck and machinery maneuvers. This permits the organizations to take steps to become a carbon-neutral organization, thereby supporting Green logistics. The integration of machine learning in supply chain management empowers turning piles of passive data into actionable BI. Enhancing the Security The disruption in the supply chain creates global business risks for logistics companies. Besides, technology enables revitalizing the supply chain in many ways. Digital locks upsurge the security high grounds of the inventory, offering robust layers of security in association with the physical security. The planning of optimum route in combination with real-time tracking of the cargo movement through the mobile apps proves essential in navigation, avoids congestion points and minimizes risks. Influence of IoT The IoT has been a vital entity for logistics and transportation organizations. Integration of IoT in the logistics is extremely contributing to warehouse management solutions, enabling precision movement and accurate tracking and packaging of goods. The implementation of IoT gadgets in logistics is fundamentally endless, ranging from tracking the packaged and transported goods in a temperature- controlled manner for ensuring the correct package reaches the correct setting at the specified time and more. Future Roadmap The next big thing to arise in the transportation and logistics industries is the extreme and innovative use of drones. This extensive use of drones would bring rapidity in things considerably, decrease the hassles, strain and provide with efficient and cost-effective operations in transportation and logistics companies. The logistics industry continues to witness growth due to the growth in retail, e-commerce and manufacturing segments. This industry is expected to reach over two billion USD in the coming decade. Escalation of e-commerce logistics and increased domestic consumption will lead ways towards the industrial revolution in the coming years. With a potential to grow and improve, the service-oriented logistics industry is ready to swell beyond the horizons in the near future. In addition, the developments in the instant future will include connected and autonomous trucks, warehouse robotics, and smart warehouse solutions. • 29. The Logistics Industry is a key segment in several world economies, including that of the United States. Using a study from AT Kearney, it accounted for about 7.5% of GDP in 2016. The Logistics industry is made up of several subsegments including: Ÿ Motor Carriers e.g. JB Hunt, Old Dominion Ÿ Parcel Delivery e.g. Fed Ex, UPS Ÿ Rail e.g. CSX, Norfolk Southern Ÿ Container Shipping e.g. Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd Ÿ Air Freight e.g. DHL, Martinair Ÿ Pipeline companies e.g. Enbridge, Kinder Morgan Ÿ Freight Forwarders e.g. Kuehne+Nagel, Sinotrans Ÿ Third Party Logistics e.g. CH Robinson, XPO Logistics Ÿ Warehousing Companies e.g. Ryder, Geodis Many of the players in the above list bleed over into the other segments and offer a broad product mix. Technology has continued to be the catalyst for change in the Logistics industry. New business models are being constantly developed and driving the industry towards a flexible, connected, optimized supply chain. Customer expectations also continue to evolve with a greater need for immediacy, convenience and personalization at the core. AI, IoT, and Blockchain technologies have a major role to play in this evolution. Logistics, in general, involves a Chain of Custody where goods change hands between multiple parties. For instance, a Seller in China wishes to ship goods to a Buyer in the US. It is very likely that in this scenario the goods e.g. a Container will go through several intermediaries e.g. trucking companies, shipping companies before reaching the buyer. At present, most of this journey is fairly opaque in that once the goods leave the custody of the Sender, there is very little insight as to its status until it arrives at the Buyer. When single companies handle the entire shipment e.g. FedEx, DHL etc then there is slightly more visibility through mobile notifications and web based tracking via tracking numbers. But when multiple carriers are involved, tracing and tracking becomes exponentially more difficult and is not being handled most effectively at present. Enter Blockchain to the rescue. • 30. Distributed Ledger technology may be just what the doctor ordered when it comes to improving the transparency in the Logistics industry. Blockchain technology provides a transparent, tamper proof, and immutable ledger – three properties which could help mitigate several of the inefficiencies in Logistics. Before we examine Blockchain in detail, let us quickly list some of the common issues faced in Logistics: Ÿ Inefficiency e.g. goods not arriving on time Ÿ Loss e.g. goods perishing enroute due to improper handling Ÿ Theft e.g. goods being stolen due to lack of security measures Ÿ Counterfeiting e.g. goods being replaced with counterfeit goods Ÿ Fraud e.g. document fraud where documents such as bill of lading are modified With this context in mind, let us study how Blockchain can help in Logistics. First, blockchain technology is extremely useful in ecosystems involving multiple players who work with one another but there may be trust issues. The Logistics ecosystem easily qualifies in this regard. Second, most of what ails the ecosystem is a lack of accountability which is brought about by the lack of transparency. For instance, in the chain of custody, if all the ecosystem participants have their own information silos (either automated or otherwise), then there is a lack of a common set of truths or a common system of record. This leads to inefficiency, errors, and even fraud. Third, compound this already maligned ecosystem by saddling it customer requirements such as cold chain shipments where temperature has to be maintained within specific thresholds e.g. pharmaceuticals or wine. In all three cases, Blockchain is a perfect fit. First, it helps all ecosystem participants’ work off of the same data by sharing data across trust boundaries breaking down the silos on information. Second, when coupled with IoT technology for real time data acquisition, blockchain can be used for governance and accountability in Chain of Custody situations. For instance, in a cold chain shipment, one can easily ascertain which party was responsible for a shipping container while in transit when the temperature gauge reading went outside of the preset thresholds. Blockchain promises to be a game changing technology and something that is a very good fit for the Logistics business and all of its complexity. This has resulted in a butterfly effect, as other segments of the industry have needed to be improved too. Simultaneously, the industry has to leverage the available resources (human resource especially) intelligently. PTG anticipated these needs and have incorporated use of latest smart technology in their business operations. For instance, Smart Robotics Automation and Machine Learning help them to relieve their internal labor force of repetitive and heavy administrative processing and hence provide the Staff the opportunities to grow and manage the smart processing that a robot can’t do. They motivate, direct and make things happen. Let’s get our leaders in the industry pushing us to the next level of transformation, with a little help from our governing bodies,” expressed Dave. While sharing his thoughts on present opportunities, Dave speaks, “Our motto is to be the strongest link in our clients supply chain and to enhance our internal staff’s growth and performance values. • 34. C orporations work very hard to provide the best customer services. Logistics is such one service. These companies manage the flow of things between the origin and the terminating end to provide necessary products and services to meet the requirement of other corporations and industries. These companies have huge responsibilities on their shoulders. They have to manage their fleets, both tracking and platooning, and have to deliver goods in time with utmost care and most importantly, with agility. The day-by-day evolution of technology gives the companies an ultimatum; “Transform or be terminated”. Companies like Amazon are front- runners in accepting the new trends in logistics. Their tested drones delivered goods over the air, emitting the long ordeals of traffic. It would be tremendous to see Amazon turning the “same day delivery” into “same hour delivery”. The involvement of the Autonomous vehicles An autonomous vehicle is not an unheard term anymore. These vehicles eradicate the need of a physical driver thus improving the overall delivery time. Vehicles like these can map their route in advance and can improvise it based on the requirement of situations like change in traffic, weather, and accident-prone areas. These autonomous vehicles are better coordinated and would have seamless and frictionless delivery process. Further, these automobiles can go to areas where humans face difficulties in reaching. Citizens of rural and low density areas, often have to compromise either with the delivery duration or in order to receive their product, they have to a reach a recognisable landmark themselves. These vehicles can go anywhere and can deliver materials to anyone. Robots and AI-powered forklifts will aid in loading and unloading of freights. The human handling and consolidation of load will be minimised. Shipping agents will be able to supervise the loading and unloading of freights from an appropriate safe distance. • 36. 3D Printing This revolutionary technology will impact the way products are produced. The product will not have to be manufactured halfway across the planet. The product will be manufactured near the user/customer, thus eliminating moving costs and saving time. As the process involve saving the data in digital form, the spare parts can be printed on demands, eliminating the need to administer the overall inventory status. Virtually, the spare parts will never go out of stock and can be produced at the demanding time. Furthermore, the companies will be able to customise the product as per customer’s requirement, even if the product is in its production pipeline. The interconnected web By upcoming decade, internet will consist of extensive fiber and fast broadband capabilities. This high-speed internet will be coupled with connected sensors capable of detecting and monitoring traffic, regulation on heavy-duty vehicles, etc. This technology will further be installed in autonomous vehicles for location monitoring and in providing routing information. The revamped internet will also support the internet of things (IoT). By using IoT, the data can be transferred over any network. Monitoring of staff, employees, and equipment will be much easier. The overall performance of machines, equipment, energy consumption, inventory status, and material flow will be boosted. Guiding the way- Augmented reality Augmented reality will simulate real-life situation by computer-generated sensory inputs. Additional inputs, such as wearable, handheld devices, and drones will assist in supervising in calamity-prone scenarios. These devices will help in generating holograms that can be extremely helpful. In several scenarios, supervisors can virtually see the variables that can happen in accident-prone situations. AR will inform supervisors, the miscalculations and the probable outcome of such miscalculations. AR will scan the cargo in freight loading and can help in placing them properly. In simple terms, remedies can be applied every time before any problem arises. This artificial reality will further assist in monitoring the inventory, employees, reading barcodes, and recognizing products thus eliminating the existing paper-based process. The Uber of trucks There are several companies testing out the “Uber” like applications to transport goods. This helps companies in outsourcing their transportation to other drivers. The software provides a direct link for truckers to connect with shippers who want to move their loads. The main purpose is to remove the third-party brokers between the truckers and shippers. By eliminating the middleman, expenses are saved. These applications will feature online maps and GPS for their exact route. These apps will monitor exact distance and arrival times, eliminating paper, phone, fax and price haggling issues. Technology on its way The evolving trends in logistics technology will definitely help in improving the transportation of resources. The transportation management systems will be live, dispatches will be autonomous, freight and fleet tracking will be extremely accurate, back office efficiency, routing, tracking, and blockchain business will be improved. By using AI and robotics, inventory status, management, supply chain design and modeling tools will be monitored. The list goes on and on. Some hurdles involved in this industry are the minimal use of such technologies. Only 3% companies are using 3D printing. Augmented reality is yet to fully function to secure its place in the market. The internet needs more cybersecurity. Cyber-attacks happen commonly nowadays and privacy has always been a concern. Some CEOs suggests that autonomous vehicle are essential, but the human element should not be eliminated. However, the everyday changing technology will definitely overcome such obstacles and it’s easy to say that the ‘future of logistics technology is shipped on time and will be delivered to industries on the exact estimated day’. | May 2018 | ™ 34

  • 42. echnology in business continues to evolve and Tdisrupt major companies and markets. If you need confirmation of that point, just look at the top 10 retailers fifteen years ago compared to today's list. Nearly all the largest retailers from a bygone era have either closed or filed for bankruptcy. They have been replaced by an online retail model that emphasizes convenience and nearly unlimited options. Think about what Uber has done to the taxi industry, or Facebook to the advertising market. Yes, technology is not only here to stay, but will continue to influence nearly every part of our lives, and business is not immune. In fact, for business, it becomes even more imperative to stay attuned to these changes and differentiate between passing fads versus a truly transformative technology. One such example has been the introduction of blockchain, originally devised for the digital currency, Bitcoin. The blockchain technology has since exploded with a vast number of other potential uses and varying platforms. However, many main stream businesses have been very slow to adopt this technology, often taking a wait and see mentality. And rightly so, if a company is not careful, they could recklessly spend substantial resources, time and money, pursuing a technology that could ultimately be a passing fad. Or worse, bet on a technology that the market doesn't assimilate and find them with a worthless platform. Blockchain, however, in many ways is revolutionary. It doesn’t address make believe problems or over exaggerated inconveniences, but rather, the real-world challenge that nearly every transaction involves, that of trust and incorruptible data. Yes, every transaction of value has the potential to be corrupted or compromised in today’s digital world. Therein lies the genius of blockchain. It is a decentralized digital ledger that can guarantee the validity of a transaction through it distributed registers and secure validation mechanism. Simply put, it brings the highest level of accountability to every transaction. With such an essential key attribute, how could blockchain be anything other than a revolutionary new technology that will eventually need to be embraced? It's been with this core belief, that MGN Logistics, based out of Easton, Pennsylvania has been pushing forward with the logistics industries first blockchain based Transportation Management System (TMS). An early adaptor of web- based technology and one of the first companies to launch a fully automated on-line freight platform called LogisticsQuote, MGN has continued to bring to market cutting edge technology for the transportation space. These innovations include its' award winning TMS, big data truckload and LTL pricing apps, sophisticated business intelligence KPIs and hundreds of API connections. The company has grown organically and through a series of private party acquisitions, including offices in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Michigan, Florida, and the Dominican Republic. The company’s current undertaking entails utilizing blockchain's incorruptible ledger to synthesize with transportation related transactions. With many transportation processes still being very manual and the high level of human error or even fraud in the market place, MGN felt it was ripe timing to introduce a new robust TMS that offered its users and those interfaced with a higher level of accountability, true end to end visibility and greater degree of automation. While several companies in the space have been focused on the international application, MGN has concentrated on the domestic LTL and truckload markets where their blockchain technology would be first to market. Today, with fraudulent double brokered loads on the rise, and shippers losing visibility into this process, we envision a platform that would end double payments for loads that have been delivered. We are creating a technology; we believe will end the insanity of tending a load of value to a carrier or broker with potentially little or no validation of who they are. We are creating a platform based on blockchain technology that will provide the most secure transportation transactions on earth. And we have a track record of not just talking or envisioning but delivering on those innovations. | May 2018 | ™ 40
