he University of Redlands is a distinguished
Tprivate, nonprofit institution that serves as a
gateway to a world of opportunities, all designed to
cater to the unique passions and potential of its students.
Nestled in the heart of Southern California, this university
enjoys a central location that offers access to a diverse
landscape, including nearby beaches, mountains, and the
desert. The University prides itself on providing a compre-
hensive array of academic offerings, with over with over
40+ undergraduate programs and 30+ graduate programs
spanning various disciplines. These include business,
communicative disorders, education, geographic informa-
tion systems, music, and theology. The educational
landscape here seamlessly blends liberal arts and profes-
sional programs, combining applied and theoretical study,
as well as traditional majors and the flexibility to design
one's own curriculum.
For undergraduate students, the University of Redlands
boasts one of the highest study abroad participation rates
among its peers, reflecting a commitment to fostering
global perspectives. Additionally, a robust NCAA Division
III athletic program adds a layer of extracurricular opportu-
nities, offering students a well-rounded college experience.
The dedication to community service is evident in the fact
that students collectively complete over 120,000 hours of
public service annually.
One unique feature of the University is the Johnston Center
for Integrative Studies, a distinctive program that empowers
self-motivated undergraduates to craft their own interdisci-
plinary course of study in collaboration with a faculty and
peer committee. This innovative approach exemplifies the
commitment to personalized education and intellectual
exploration.
In addition to its picturesque 160-acre residential campus in
Redlands, adorned with orange groves, architectural
landmarks, and more than 1,700 trees, the University
extends its reach through a number of regional locations.
These regional campuses offer convenient access to a wide
range of programs, making higher education more accessi-
ble to working adults and those with busy schedules.
With a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1907,
the University of Redlands has consistently demonstrated
its ability to prepare graduates for career success and a
lifelong commitment to learning. Its alumni, spanning
generations, have found that their experiences at the
University have paved the way for rewarding careers and a

The School of Business & Society has embarked on a multifaceted
initiative to explore how businesses can make a positive
contribution to society beyond just financial profitability.
For instance, the Master of Organizational Leadership
(MSOL) degree was introduced, structured around the 'Arc
of Purposeful Leadership.' This curriculum guides students
from self-development to team management, organizational
strategy, and, ultimately, societal impact.
In recent developments, the school has initiated a merger
with the Presidio Graduate School, offering an MBA
program focused on sustainable business. Other offerings
through SBS include short-term study abroad opportunities
for all students, including working professionals, and a
global consultancy capstone. SBS also hosts the Banta
Center for Ethical and Purposeful Leadership and the
Center for Spatial Business.
The School of Business & Society is an integral part of the
University of Redlands' 116-year legacy of academic
excellence and opportunity. This private, nonprofit
institution encompasses various schools and centers,
including the School of Education, School of Performing
Arts, Stauffer Science Center, Johnston Center for
Integrative Studies, and the San Francisco Theological
continued pursuit of knowledge. The University of
Redlands is not just a place of learning; it's a dynamic
institution that shapes futures and fosters a spirit of
exploration and growth.
University of Redlands Dean
Dr. Thomas Horan assumed the role of dean of the
University of Redlands School of Business & Society
(formerly known as the School of Business) in 2017, where
he holds the H. Jess and Donna Colton Senecal Endowed
Dean’s Chair. His decision to join the University of
Redlands was driven by a unique opportunity. The institu-
tion not only focuses on how businesses functions but also
emphasizes their broader social context. Under his leader-
ship, the School of Business & Society (SBS) has evolved
to provide students with a foundational business education
and the chance to make a meaningful impact in businesses,
non-profit organizations and government.
As per Dr. Horan, the school's holistic approach to business
education has led to innovative programs and curriculum.
Seminary, which is located on the northern California
campus in San Anselmo near San Francisco, and also hosts
Presidio Graduate School residency programs.
Pioneering Personalized Education
Dr. Horan highlights the University's recent strategic plan,
"Forward Together," which is founded on a new mission:
"We welcome, educate, and empower a diverse community
of learners for lives of meaning, impact, and joy." The
vision is to lead California in delivering a student-focused,
personalized education that drives student success by 2032.
"Forward Together" is underpinned by six core values:
excellence, exploration, inclusivity, justice, kindness, and
service.
Dr. Horan emphasizes that it's not sufficient to merely
articulate these values but to put them into action. As
leaders, the responsibility is to foster a collaborative,
trusting, and imaginative environment where individuals
genuinely want to work, rather than feel obligated to work.
Creating this sense of community allows for constant
adaptation to meet the ever-evolving landscape of higher
education. This approach ensures that students are met
where they are, providing an optimal learning experience
that positions them for success and career growth.
The University places a strong emphasis on experiential
learning, community service, study abroad, and real-world
internships and “capstone” projects and professional
development opportunities. These elements contribute to
students' personal and professional development, impacting
their careers and communities.
The School of Business & Society (SBS) offers a range of
programs, including bachelor's degree completion and
master's degrees in business administration, business
analytics, and organizational leadership. Undergraduate
students can also opt for an accelerated master's program
known as "4 + 1," allowing them to earn both bachelor's
and master's degrees in just five years.
Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
"This year, we received the prestigious designation of
Hispanic Serving Institution and Fulbright HSI Leader."
About 65% of the student body of Redlands is non-white.
Dr. Horan's vision for the future of the School
of Business & Society at the University of
Redlands is part of the institution's strategic
plan, Forward Together.”
It’s incumbent upon us to embrace this diversity,” Dr.
Horan said.
The University’s commitment to an equitable and inclusive
University community is expressed through various actions.
Lead by the University’s Senior Diversity and Inclusion
Officer, these actions include:
Ÿ Completion of a campus climate survey to evaluate
where change was needed.
Ÿ Completion of the University of Redlands Anti-Racist
Statement that acknowledges the painful experiences of
so many and endorses the University’s commitment to
positive change.
Ÿ Formation of a University Anti-Racism Committee
composed of faculty, staff, students, cabinet members,
and alumni to develop an anti-racism plan and ways to
better elevate and consider the voices and perspectives
from the university’s communities of Black, Indigenous,
Latina/o/x/Hispanic, and people of color.
Holistic Approach to Student Success and Global
Engagement
Dr. Horan emphasizes the University's commitment to
student success through the establishment of a dedicated
student success team. This team adopts a holistic approach,
focusing on enhancing student success both within the
classroom and through co-curricular activities. They work
with students to help them plan and achieve their educa-
tional goals while also providing access to various experi-
ences that broaden their understanding of the business
world.
One standout program is the University's study abroad
initiative, which is tailored to accommodate the schedules
of many working professional students. These condensed 7-
to-10-day experiences enable students to explore different
cultures in Europe, Asia, and other regions while gaining
insights into how businesses operate within these diverse
cultural contexts. These experiences offer students first-

hand exposure to the global nature of business operations.
Furthermore, the University takes pride in its longstanding
community service programs, which have a positive and
tangible impact on local communities. These programs
provide students with real-world experiences that not only
contribute to their personal growth but also serve the
betterment of the communities they engage with.
Adapting to Changing Learning Models
The University of Redlands has strategically utilized
technology in its overall educational experience.
“A special initiative that I’m leading is called, ‘Classroom
of the Future,’is about how to integrate new technologies,
not just Zoom rooms, but immersive technologies, AI
(Artificial Intelligence), and other things we don’t even
know about yet into the educational experience. At the same
time, making sure not to lose the social and human-engaged
aspects that make a university worth attending,” Dr. Horan
said.
As noted above, Redlands is also meeting students where
they are through a merger with Presidio Graduate School.
“There are many aspects that make this merger exciting,
including the impact the school has already had in prepar-
ing organizational leaders to address the challenges of
environmental sustainability and social justice. One
additional aspect is how the school uses low residencies to
balance out the online learning environment. Immersive
weekend-long, on-campus classes are now being held at our
beautiful Marin campus and we are beginning to implement
this model of low residency in our other degree programs,
including our Master of Science and Organizational
Leadership. More broadly, this model inspires us, as
leaders, to think through how we balance the strong interest
among our students to take online courses with the value
that we, as educators, perceive in face-to-face communica-
tion and collaboration,” Dr. Horan said.
Encouraging Entrepreneurial Mindsets for Professional
Excellence
Dr. Horan highlights the University's approach to training
students to become entrepreneurs within their respective
professional settings. Many students are already pursuing
careers they are passionate about, such as healthcare,
education, or government, and they aspire to excel within
these fields. The University equips them with the necessary
skills to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset within diverse
organizational contexts.
What's particularly exciting is that over 50% of the
University's students receive promotions while they are still
in the program, demonstrating that they are actively
applying what they are learning as they learn it. This
tangible progress is a source of great enthusiasm for the
University. Dr. Horan expresses the institution's intention to
further develop the concept of 'intrapreneurship' and
provide students with expanded opportunities to innovate
and make a meaningful impact on the world.
Culture of Service and Ethical Business Leadership
The University boasts one of the most enduring service-
learning programs in the collegiate landscape. For over
three decades, undergraduate students in the College of Arts
and Sciences at Redlands have been required to fulfill a
service component for graduation, often aligned with their
academic interests. Students consistently go above and
beyond the mandated service hours, gaining invaluable real-
world experience while making a positive impact on their
communities. This commitment has earned Redlands
recognition as a top producer of Peace Corps volunteers and
Fulbright students, further exemplifying the institution's
dedication to service both locally and globally.
“The School of Business & Society has embarked on a
multifaceted initiative to explore how businesses can make
a positive contribution to society beyond just financial
profitability.”
Their annual 'Business for a Better World' conference,
organized through the Banta Center for Ethical and
Purposeful Leadership, showcases purpose-driven busi-
nesses as catalysts for positive social change and progress.
This event delves into the role that businesses and
nonprofits in the region play in advancing crucial economic,
societal, and environmental priorities, while also consider-
ing the implications for educational institutions.
As part of this effort, the School of Business & Society
collaborates with organizations like Esri, a global leader in
Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to develop
programs that assist businesses in utilizing spatial informa-
tion to comprehend the impact of their supply chains on
communities and the environment, reinforcing the institu-
tion's commitment to ethical and purposeful business
practices.
“This world leader is using GIS to not only make
businesses succeed but to do so in a manner that is socially
and environmentally responsible. We are delighted by this
strong partnership with Esri, and that over 400 of students
have gone on to work for them,” Dr. Horan said.
Nurturing Careers and Lifelong Success Through
OCPD
The University's Office of Career and Professional
Development (OCPD) is an invaluable resource for
Redlands students from their very first day on campus and
continues to support alumni throughout their entire careers.
The OCPD is dedicated to fostering a university culture that
encourages career awareness and opportunity, starting from
the moment of admission until retirement. The office
provides an array of services, including professional
assessments, guidance for job searches, assistance with
resumes, portfolios, and interview preparation, as well as
managing referrals.
University of Redlands graduates embark on successful
careers in a wide range of fields, encompassing business,
education, the arts, and more. Regardless of their chosen
paths, they carry with them the broad perspective, problem-
solving skills, and critical thinking abilities cultivated
during their time at Redlands. Graduates also become part
of a vast network of over 50,000 fellow Redlands alumni,
contributing to a legacy that spans well over a century.
Measuring Student Success and Alumni Satisfaction
The University conducts annual assessments to gauge
student success and program quality, with a focus on two
key indicators: retention and graduation rates. Each fall, the
institution evaluates the number of former first-year
students who choose to return, while each spring, the
number of students completing their degree requirements
and graduating is recorded.
While these metrics provide valuable insights, the most
meaningful measure of student outcomes comes from
graduate exit surveys and alumni feedback. A recent survey
conducted in 2022 found that 84% of responding University
of Redlands alumni expressed satisfaction with their career
progress, a figure that exceeds the national average.
Additionally, more than 90% of surveyed alumni reported
gaining critical thinking skills through their education, and
an equal percentage agreed that Redlands played a pivotal
role in helping them understand career opportunities.
Fostering a Culture of Lifelong Learning
Dr. Horan emphasizes that at the University of Redlands, a
commitment to lifelong learning is deeply ingrained in the
institution's culture. This dedication to continuous learning
is promoted and supported by leadership and educators
across the campus. One of the fundamental missions of the
Office of Career and Professional Development is to
seamlessly integrate career and professional development
into the classroom experience.
To encourage and facilitate ongoing professional develop-
ment and lifelong learning, the University has implemented
a tuition remission program. This program incentivizes staff
and faculty to further their education and skillsets. Addi-
tionally, the University of Redlands Staff Assembly
periodically organizes professional development events,
including peer teaching sessions covering essential skills
and programs. Moreover, Redlands offers a range of
certificates and courses that cater to the demands of various
careers and fields, making them accessible to faculty, staff,
students, and alumni alike.
A Vision for Inclusive Education in a Digital Age
"Dr. Horan's vision for the future of the School of Business
& Society at the University of Redlands is part of the
institution's strategic plan, Forward Together." This vision
is centered on the commitment to meet students "where
they are." By creating a diverse range of programs and
teaching methods that ensure accessibility for the entire
student body, the University has transcended its original
geographical constraints. The University of Redlands now
maintains a presence in both Southern California at its
traditional Redlands campus and in Northern California at
the Marin campus. Additionally, all programs within the
School of Business & Society are available online.
This multifaceted approach combines the convenience and
accessibility of online programs with the treasured and
invaluable on-campus university experience. The aim is to
provide students with an education that prepares them to
succeed and lead lives filled with purpose and impact. Dr.
Horan and the University of Redlands are committed to
delivering the best of both worlds to their students, ensuring
they receive a high-quality education that adapts to their
diverse needs and circumstances.

Briefly describe your mission
and vision regarding student
success and career growth
The ambition to have an impact and to
shape a better world is representative of
the generation coming to us for an
education today and tomorrow. It reflects a
sense of civic duty, responsibility, optimism,
initiative, and the desire to do more than just a job.
Our mission therefore is empowering young professionals
on their journey to shape a better world.
BUas drives its mission through integrated learning and
research. In our diverse learning communities, students,
industry partners, lecturers, and researchers collaborate on
real-world challenges.
This amalgamation of education, research and practical
impact is vital, especially in a world facing complex issues
like population growth, environmental concerns and
technological shifts. As technology reshapes industries and
work dynamics, BUas prepares professionals to navigate
these changes. We stand at the forefront, equipping
individuals to lead through the challenges of the future.
Our vision therefore is educating for and in a
continuously changing world.
Could you highlight some of the university’s most
innovative programmes or initiatives aimed at
enhancing student success and career growth?
In fact, all BUas’ programmes and initiatives help industry
partners innovate, adjust to society’s challenges and
transform accordingly.
Artificial Intelligence
(AI) and digital realities open
up new frontiers for governance,
organisation and management. Digitalisation
and climate change drive the innovation of business
models and governance in the tourism, leisure and
hospitality domains. In the quest for circular and
sustainable working environments, facility management
concepts are changing fast. Livable cities increasingly
require smart logistics. The built environment needs to be
reconsidered and redesigned to remain habitable, creative
places that inspire communities and visitors to tackle
societal challenges.
To make a difference in the future of these sectors, BUas
strives to be much more than a higher education institute
offering degree programmes. BUas engages in research
from the idea that knowledge contributes to solving these
societal issues. At the same time, it allows students to better
understand and respond to them.
How does the university foster collaborations with
industries to create opportunities for students?
BUas cooperates with businesses all over the world which
are at the top of their field. This means that students can get
work placement positions at some of the big names in their
field of expertise such as Samsung, Disney, Google, KLM,
and Hilton.
We consider the international experience of great
importance. That is why we encourage students to go
abroad during their studies for a work placement or an
exchange programme. Lecturers often have an international
background. We think it is important that they participate in
December 2023 | 19 | www.insightssuccess.com
international networks. In many cases, lecturers are also
active in the professional field in addition to teaching. For
students, this not only means that they are on top of current
events but also that they can benefit from these extensive
and valuable networks.
How does the educational establishment assist students
in identifying career paths and securing work
placements or job opportunities?
At BUas, in-house training companies, studios and labs
spanning diverse fields guide students towards their career
paths. BUas serves as an inspiring hub where students, staff
and industry partners converge, creating a dynamic
community of shared knowledge and experiences. The
campus, driven by core values like transparency, inclusivity
and sustainability, blends technology seamlessly to offer a
secure and comfortable atmosphere. Within its walls,
various spaces cater to different needs, from project rooms
and labs to quiet study corners.
Notably, BUas embraces entrepreneurial spirit through its
Innovation Square. This innovative hub bridges education
and applied research with industry activities. Welcoming
industry professionals, students, alumni and researchers,
it acts as a nexus for collaboration, career
opportunities and even startup ventures.
BUas doesn’t just offer education; it
fosters an environment where
innovation, connection and entrepreneurship thrive,
ensuring a holistic and enriching experience for all.
How does your educational institute promote
mentorship and guidance for students throughout their
academic journey?
We strive to be a close community on our campus in Breda.
That is why we encourage all BUas staff and students to
jointly engage in activities that connect us beyond the
curriculum. We offer students a range of extracurricular
activities that contribute to the BUas campus feeling and
interconnectedness with fellow students and BUas staff. We
have several associations and clubs, which organise parties,
sports and games activities, excursions, and other events.
We think it is very important that all students feel welcome
at our university. We welcome all the enthusiasm, happiness
and joy from our students, as well as their questions,
concerns and support needs. We have a dedicated and
professional team to offer support whenever needed.
We also offer a wide variety of free extracurricular training
courses and activities under the name BEST. BEST stands
for Better Studying. By better, we do not mean raising the
bar higher. Not at all, in fact. We would like to contribute to
students’ well-being in an easily accessible way. We do so
by offering all sorts of skills and behavioural training
courses that may help students to handle their studies in a
pleasant way, as a result of which they feel a stronger
learner.
In today’s rapidly changing job market, what efforts
does the university make to equip students with future-
ready skills?
At BUas, young professionals embark on a
transformative journey, honing skills that
transcend textbooks, shaping not just
careers but a better world. Our
education, research and culture
nurture these skills,
empowering students for
life.
December 2023 | 20 | www.insightssuccess.com
BUas Skills for Life:
Ÿ Creating Meaningful
Experiences: Through innovative
and entrepreneurial mindsets, we
empower students to make a societal
impact. By connecting with the industry
and offering small-scale, intensive
education, we cultivate global vision, local
sensibilities and sustainable ambitions fostering
meaningful learning experiences.
Ÿ Integrating and Shaping the Future: We equip
students to navigate the complexities of a
hyperconnected world. By integrating cross-domain and
cross-cultural contexts, utilising data and technology,
and fostering a global mindset in diverse classrooms, we
prepare them to shape future industries. Our approach
blends research and education, creating balanced
professionals adept at integrating diverse perspectives.
Ÿ Guts and Personal Leadership: At BUas, we nurture
self-awareness and personal leadership. Students learn
to articulate their purpose, make informed choices and
contribute to meaningful decision-making. Through
personalised learning and student ownership, we offer
room to grow, enabling both personal and professional
development. We instil the courage to speak up, address
challenges and become self-directing professionals
ready to lead.
How do you engage students in research projects and
industry-specific initiatives to enhance their practical
knowledge and skills?
At BUas, education transcends solitary endeavours through
our innovative learning community model. Here, students,
lecturers and industry professionals collaborate on real-life
challenges, fostering innovation and addressing societal
issues collectively. This approach isn’t new, but recent
enhancements make it dynamic. Restaurant Sibelicious, a
training company, serves as a longstanding model. What
sets us apart is our inclusion of industry partners, enriching
the learning experience.
In BUas’ learning communities, active student involvement
is pivotal. Students lead their learning journey, emphasising
process over the end product. It’s about the knowledge
gained, the path taken and the growth mindset cultivated.
Each learning community is unique, adapting to specific
domains. For instance, Esports and Tourism Impact Lab
form vibrant communities where knowledge evolves
collectively. In Logistics, the learning community revolves
around real challenges
faced by transport company
Arriva, involving not just students and
lecturers, but also Arriva’s young professionals,
creating a shared learning experience.
The essence lies in mutual learning and the growth
opportunities crafted for everyone involved. BUas’ learning
communities inspire continuous development, nurturing a
spirit of collaboration, innovation and lifelong learning.
How do you measure the success of its initiatives in
driving student success and career growth?
One indicator is to look at success rates of our students.
How many drop out, how many get their diploma within the
desired time. But those are just quantitative numbers. The
quality of education and research at BUas is demonstrated
by high ratings in recognised international and national
rankings. But perhaps the best indicator is that our alumni
are successful and eager to come back to our campus to
work together with students or be active in our community
as a guest lecturer in a panel, during an industry event etc.
Furthermore, alumni actively participate in our learning
communities. In this way, valuable experience comes back
into education, which empowers the new generation of
students.

arly childhood education plays a pivotal role in
Eshaping the cognitive development of young minds.
As the foundation for future learning and academic
success, the early years of a child's life are a critical period
for brain development. In this article, we will explore the
significance of early childhood education in fostering
cognitive growth and setting the stage for a lifetime of
learning.
Brain Development in Early Childhood
The first few years of a child's life are marked by rapid
brain development. During this period, the brain forms
neural connections at an astounding rate, laying the
groundwork for various cognitive functions. Early
childhood education programs are designed to stimulate and
nurture this development through age-appropriate activities
that engage and challenge young minds.
Critical Periods for Learning
Research suggests that there are critical periods in early
childhood during which certain skills and abilities are most
easily acquired. Language acquisition, for instance, is
particularly receptive during the early years. Early
childhood education programs capitalize on these critical
periods, providing an environment conducive to language
development, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving
skills.
Social and Emotional Development
Beyond cognitive skills, early childhood education also
focuses on social and emotional development. Interactions
with peers and teachers in a structured learning
environment help children develop essential social skills,
emotional resilience, and the ability to regulate their
emotions. These foundational skills contribute to a child's
overall well-being and lay the groundwork for successful
future relationships.
Preparation for Formal Education
Early childhood education acts as a bridge between the
home environment and formal schooling. It introduces
children to routines, social expectations, and the basic skills
necessary for success in a school setting. Exposure to early
learning experiences fosters a positive attitude towards
education, making the transition to formal schooling
smoother and more successful.

Cognitive Skills Enhancement
Early childhood education programs are designed to
enhance various cognitive skills crucial for academic
success. These skills include attention and concentration,
memory, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Engaging
activities, such as storytelling, creative play, and hands-on
experiences, stimulate different areas of the brain,
contributing to the development of a well-rounded
cognitive foundation.
Cultivation of Curiosity and Creativity: The early years
are marked by a natural curiosity and creativity. Early
childhood education nurtures these innate qualities by
encouraging exploration, imagination, and creativity.
Activities such as art projects, imaginative play, and
exposure to various stimuli contribute to the development
of a child's creativity, fostering a lifelong love for learning.
Language and Communication Skills: Early childhood
education places a strong emphasis on language
development. Children are exposed to rich language
experiences through storytelling, conversations, and
interactive activities. This not only lays the foundation for
effective communication but also enhances the child's
ability to comprehend and express thoughts, ideas, and
emotions.
Introduction to Technology: In the modern age,
technology is an integral part of daily life. Early childhood
education can introduce age-appropriate technological tools
and educational software, helping children become familiar
with technology in a controlled and educational setting.
This early exposure prepares them for the digital demands
of the future.
Building Executive Function Skills: Executive function
skills, including self-control, working memory, and
cognitive flexibility, are crucial for success in school and
life. Early childhood education activities, such as games
that require planning and organization, contribute to the
development of these executive function skills, enabling
children to navigate challenges effectively.
Fostering a Positive Attitude Toward Learning: Early
childhood education aims to create a positive and nurturing
learning environment. When children associate learning
with enjoyment and success, they develop a positive
attitude toward education. This mindset becomes a
powerful motivator, influencing their approach to learning
as they progress through their academic journey.
Individualized Learning
Every child is unique, and early childhood education
recognizes and accommodates this diversity. Programs
often incorporate individualized learning plans, taking into
account each child's strengths, interests, and areas that may
need additional support. This personalized approach
maximizes the effectiveness of education, catering to the
specific needs of each child.
Long-term Impact on Academic Achievement
Studies consistently show that children who participate in
quality early childhood education programs demonstrate
higher levels of academic achievement throughout their
school years. The early cognitive stimulation and
foundational skills acquired during this period contribute to
a child's ability to grasp complex concepts, excel in various
subjects, and approach learning with confidence.
Breakdown of Socioeconomic Barriers
Access to quality early childhood education has the
potential to break down socioeconomic barriers. By
providing all children, regardless of their background, with
a strong educational foundation, society can mitigate
disparities in academic achievement. Investing in early
childhood education is not only an investment in individual
children but also in the future of communities and nations.
In conclusion, early childhood education serves as the
cornerstone for cognitive development, setting the stage for
a child's lifelong learning journey. The early years are a
unique window of opportunity to shape the architecture of
the brain and instil a love for learning. By recognizing the
importance of early childhood education, we can empower
the next generation with the tools they need to thrive
academically, socially, and emotionally. It is not merely an
investment in the present but a commitment to building a
brighter and more equitable future for all.

Nova Southeastern University
Beyond Education—Building Legacies
In the sprawling landscape of education, Nova
Southeastern University exists as a haven of
knowledge, a bastion of intellectual growth and a
sanctuary for innovation. It is an institution that stands as a
beacon of enlightenment, offering transformative education
and shaping the future leaders of tomorrow.
A bustling campus, abuzz with the energy of curious minds,
where the pursuit of knowledge knows no bounds. Here,
amidst the corridors of learning, students find not just
classrooms but gateways to new worlds, expanding their
horizons and nurturing their passions. It’s a place where the
spirit of exploration is celebrated, where students are
encouraged not only to question but to seek answers that
have the potential to change the world.
Let’s delve into an inspiration embodied in the form of an
institution that continues to empower, inspire and pave the
way for a future where innovation knows no bounds!
We spoke with George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D., President and
CEO of NSU, in an exclusive interview in which he shared
valuable facts about NSU.
Could you highlight some of the university’s most
innovative programs or initiatives aimed at enhancing
student success and career growth?
The NSU Alan B. Levan | Broward Center of Innovation is
a public-private partnership that functions as an economic
development engine for South Florida. Broward County’s
population is projected to surpass two million in 2025 and
25% of those residents will be between the ages of 20-39.
These are the future startup founders that the Levan Center
attracts to help them develop their innovative ideas and
learn how to scale their businesses.
Another innovative program is the Jerry Taylor and Nancy
Bryant Trading Floor, which is currently under construction
at our Fort Lauderdale Campus and set to open in 2024. The
trading floor will give students hands-on experience in
managing investments, with help from an advisory board of
experienced investment professionals.
Finally, I would note that our dual admission programs
allow students to enter NSU at the undergraduate level and
leave with a doctorate and ready to work as physicians,
optometrists, psychologists, dentists, and other rewarding
professionals.
How does the university foster collaborations with
industries to create opportunities for students?
There are many spaces where NSU is active and building
ties with organizations that are beneficial to our students.
The Levan Center is helping to expand the growth of the hi-
tech and biotech industries in South Florida. Tech workers
are high in demand here and grew nearly 8% as a segment
of the workforce between 2016 and 2021. The Levan
Center also runs a military-grade cybersecurity range that
can train professionals at all levels, including industry,
government, and academia.
Health care is a major area for NSU, and we established a
partnership with HCA to have their University Hospital,
located next to our Fort Lauderdale Campus, serve as a
teaching hospital for our students. We are also building an
advanced Interprofessional Simulation Complex, or
SimCom, that will allow students to simulate real-life
healthcare environments. The university is developing a
comprehensive cancer treatment center with a hotel and
conference center. This complete package will make the
university a destination not just for Florida but also for
Latin America.
Could you share some remarkable success stories of
alumni who have excelled in their careers after
graduating from university?
We have so many alumni who have built impressive careers
in a variety of fields. One example is Lenny Comma, a
graduate of our MBA program who was at the Jack in Box
burger chain in various roles for 18 years, including as
COO for four years and later as CEO for six years.
Another example is Gordon Weekes, the Broward County
Public Defender, and an alum of the NSU Shepard Broad

College of Law. He made history in 2021 as the first person
of color to be elected as Public Defender in the state of
Florida. Other NSU alumni have gone on to become judges
and legislators, achieving change at all levels of
government.
How does the educational establishment assist students
in identifying career paths and accomplishing their
goals?
NSU’s Center for Academic and Professional Success
provides students with resources and advice throughout all
four years of their academic journey and beyond.
Undergraduate students have access to advisers who help
with choosing courses and majors, optimizing resumes and
cover letters along with mock interviews.
Students can also find internships and shadowing
opportunities with local and national employers that recruit
our graduates. The Center maintains a database of available
jobs and students take advantage of its digital career
development software.
The Center is also available to graduate students and alumni
where its success speaks for itself—approximately 90% of
NSU students have taken advantage of the Center. Here,
85% of students secured post-graduate plans within six
months of graduation.
About 60% of our undergraduate students go on to graduate
programs and most of our Honors undergraduates are taking
advantage of dual admissions.
How does your educational institute promote
mentorship and guidance for students throughout their
academic journey?
Our graduate students serve as mentors to undergraduate
students in various ways, including at the NSU Write from
the Start Writing and Communication Center, an innovative
workspace where trained peer consultants help students
with academic writing and communications projects.
Graduate students also mentor students in online programs
and at our regional campuses. This is an unparalleled
advantage that grants undergraduate students access to
superior mentorship.
I would also point to our accredited M.S. in Anesthesia
program offered at four locations including Denver, which
has the most clinical rotation sites of any Anesthesiology
Assistant program in the country. Additionally, the program
is structured to provide one-on-one faculty mentoring so
that students always have individualized support.
In today’s rapidly changing job market, what efforts
does the university make to equip students with future-
ready skills?
Our students have a long-term focus on their careers.
Biology is our number one undergraduate major, as students
come to NSU with a future in health care in mind. Many of
those students take advantage of our dual admissions
options to continue their graduate studies at NSU.
Seventy percent of our student body is graduate and when
they leave NSU, they are well-equipped for success in high-
demand careers like Anesthesiology Assistants. NSU’s
student loan default rate is also far lower than competing
public/private universities, which means our graduates can
start careers that let them thrive financially and pay down
their loan obligations.
NSU is always looking forward to the future of education.
The Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine is
our newest college and we designed it from the ground up

to be a completely modern medical school, down to our
selection process for students and, of course, the
curriculum.
The students in our M.D. program engage in problem-based
learning where they work in small groups under faculty
supervision to hone their diagnosis skills. They also use the
latest in 3-D anatomical software and learn alongside
students from other health professions. Our goal is to
educate physicians who can solve complex problems by
working in interdisciplinary teams, going far beyond the old
model of memorizing material in a textbook.
How do you engage students in research projects and
industry-specific initiatives to enhance their practical
knowledge and skills?
NSU undergraduate students are required to earn six units
in Experiential Education and Learning, which includes an
introductory course and a capstone senior project. This
program can take many forms, including participating in
marine research, studying abroad, community service,
model UN, and more.
Students are also encouraged to participate in NSU’s
Undergraduate Student Symposium, which has been hosted
annually by the Farquhar Honors College for more than two
decades. The symposium gives students the opportunity not
only to conduct research in a subject that interests them but
also to hone their speaking and presentation skills.
Our undergraduate students also engage in research in their
discipline in their first year, compared to other universities.
We have undergraduate students partnering with faculty
members on graduate-level research and are listed as first
authors and/or present research posters at national
conferences. This invaluable experience prepares them for
their future careers.
How do you measure the success of its initiatives in
driving student success and career growth?
NSU measures its success in various ways, including our
ranking in publications like U.S. News and World Report, or
being recognized as a Military Friendly University. We also
look at the reputations of our alumni, who are 210,000
strong globally and growing.
An NSU Shark’s connection to the university doesn’t end
when they walk the stage and receive their diploma. Many
programs track student career outcomes as part of their
accreditation process and that data is invaluable for shaping
our curriculum to ensure that all our students are best
prepared for success in their chosen fields. NSU offers
resources to all alumni to help them with career
development, job searches and networking opportunities.

The Bridge of Progress
The Role of
Universities in
Fostering a Culture
of Innovation
niversities play a pivotal role in shaping the
Uintellectual landscape of societies, but their impact
extends far beyond the realms of academia. One of
the key responsibilities of higher education institutions is to
foster a culture of innovation, providing an environment
that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and
groundbreaking ideas. In this article, we will explore the

in their fields. This open dissemination of information
creates an ecosystem where innovation can thrive, as
individuals build upon existing knowledge to create novel
solutions.
Education and Skill Development
Universities are instrumental in equipping students with the
skills and mindset necessary for innovation. Through
rigorous academic programs, students are exposed to
diverse disciplines, encouraged to think critically, and
challenged to solve complex problems. Interdisciplinary
approaches, where students engage with multiple fields of
study, are particularly effective in fostering creativity and
innovation.
Furthermore, universities provide platforms for experiential
learning, internships, and collaborative projects. These
opportunities allow students to apply theoretical knowledge
in real-world contexts, honing their problem-solving
abilities and nurturing an entrepreneurial spirit. By instilling
a passion for learning and resilience in the face of
challenges, universities empower students to become
catalysts for innovation in their future endeavours.
December 2023 | 31 | www.insightssuccess.com
Research and Industry Collaboration
To bridge the gap between academia and industry,
universities actively engage in collaborative ventures with
the private sector. Partnerships with businesses, research
institutions, and startups facilitate the transfer of knowledge
from academic settings to practical applications. Such
collaborations provide a valuable feedback loop, enabling
researchers to address real-world challenges and ensuring
that innovations are relevant and impactful.
These collaborations also offer students the opportunity to
work on industry-sponsored projects, exposing them to the
demands and dynamics of the professional world. This
hands-on experience not only enriches their education but
also contributes to the development of a skilled workforce
ready to drive innovation in various sectors.
Incubators and Innovation Hubs
Many universities have established incubators and
innovation hubs to support entrepreneurial activities and the
development of startups. These spaces provide resources,
mentorship, and networking opportunities for students,
faculty, and alumni with innovative ideas. By fostering an
entrepreneurial ecosystem within the university, these
initiatives contribute to the translation of research into
marketable products and services.
Additionally, these hubs serve as a nexus for collaboration
between academia and industry, facilitating the exchange of
ideas and expertise. The success stories emerging from
university-based incubators underscore the vital role these
institutions play in nurturing a culture of innovation that
extends beyond the campus walls.
Cultural Diversity and Interdisciplinary Research
Universities bring together diverse talents, perspectives, and
experiences. This cultural diversity fosters an environment
where interdisciplinary research can flourish. The
intersection of different academic disciplines often leads to
the emergence of novel ideas and solutions. By encouraging
collaboration across departments and fostering a culture of
inclusivity, universities become catalysts for innovative
thinking.
Ethical Considerations and Social Impact
Universities play a crucial role in instilling ethical
considerations in the pursuit of innovation. As students and
researchers explore new ideas and technologies, it is
essential to emphasize the importance of responsible
innovation. Universities can foster a culture that encourages
ethical research practices, sustainability, and a commitment
to addressing societal challenges, ensuring that innovations
have a positive impact on the world.
Investment in Research Infrastructure
To support cutting-edge research and innovation,
universities must invest in state-of-the-art research
infrastructure. Access to advanced laboratories, technology
platforms, and research tools empowers researchers to
conduct experiments and investigations that push the
boundaries of knowledge. By providing these resources,
universities create an environment conducive to
breakthrough discoveries and technological advancements.
In conclusion, the role of universities in fostering a culture
of innovation is multifaceted and indispensable. Through
the creation and dissemination of knowledge, the
development of critical thinking skills, collaboration with
industries, and the establishment of innovation hubs,
universities serve as crucibles for creativity and progress.
The impact of universities on innovation extends far beyond
the campus, influencing societies and economies as they
contribute to the development of groundbreaking solutions
to global challenges. As we navigate an increasingly
complex and dynamic world, the importance of universities
in shaping innovative minds and fostering progress cannot
be overstated.

  • 13. The School of Business & Society has embarked on a multifaceted initiative to explore how businesses can make a positive contribution to society beyond just financial profitability.
  • 14. For instance, the Master of Organizational Leadership (MSOL) degree was introduced, structured around the 'Arc of Purposeful Leadership.' This curriculum guides students from self-development to team management, organizational strategy, and, ultimately, societal impact. In recent developments, the school has initiated a merger with the Presidio Graduate School, offering an MBA program focused on sustainable business. Other offerings through SBS include short-term study abroad opportunities for all students, including working professionals, and a global consultancy capstone. SBS also hosts the Banta Center for Ethical and Purposeful Leadership and the Center for Spatial Business. The School of Business & Society is an integral part of the University of Redlands' 116-year legacy of academic excellence and opportunity. This private, nonprofit institution encompasses various schools and centers, including the School of Education, School of Performing Arts, Stauffer Science Center, Johnston Center for Integrative Studies, and the San Francisco Theological continued pursuit of knowledge. The University of Redlands is not just a place of learning; it's a dynamic institution that shapes futures and fosters a spirit of exploration and growth. University of Redlands Dean Dr. Thomas Horan assumed the role of dean of the University of Redlands School of Business & Society (formerly known as the School of Business) in 2017, where he holds the H. Jess and Donna Colton Senecal Endowed Dean’s Chair. His decision to join the University of Redlands was driven by a unique opportunity. The institu- tion not only focuses on how businesses functions but also emphasizes their broader social context. Under his leader- ship, the School of Business & Society (SBS) has evolved to provide students with a foundational business education and the chance to make a meaningful impact in businesses, non-profit organizations and government. As per Dr. Horan, the school's holistic approach to business education has led to innovative programs and curriculum.
  • 15. Seminary, which is located on the northern California campus in San Anselmo near San Francisco, and also hosts Presidio Graduate School residency programs. Pioneering Personalized Education Dr. Horan highlights the University's recent strategic plan, "Forward Together," which is founded on a new mission: "We welcome, educate, and empower a diverse community of learners for lives of meaning, impact, and joy." The vision is to lead California in delivering a student-focused, personalized education that drives student success by 2032. "Forward Together" is underpinned by six core values: excellence, exploration, inclusivity, justice, kindness, and service. Dr. Horan emphasizes that it's not sufficient to merely articulate these values but to put them into action. As leaders, the responsibility is to foster a collaborative, trusting, and imaginative environment where individuals genuinely want to work, rather than feel obligated to work. Creating this sense of community allows for constant adaptation to meet the ever-evolving landscape of higher education. This approach ensures that students are met where they are, providing an optimal learning experience that positions them for success and career growth. The University places a strong emphasis on experiential learning, community service, study abroad, and real-world internships and “capstone” projects and professional development opportunities. These elements contribute to students' personal and professional development, impacting their careers and communities. The School of Business & Society (SBS) offers a range of programs, including bachelor's degree completion and master's degrees in business administration, business analytics, and organizational leadership. Undergraduate students can also opt for an accelerated master's program known as "4 + 1," allowing them to earn both bachelor's and master's degrees in just five years. Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion "This year, we received the prestigious designation of Hispanic Serving Institution and Fulbright HSI Leader." About 65% of the student body of Redlands is non-white. Dr. Horan's vision for the future of the School of Business & Society at the University of Redlands is part of the institution's strategic plan, Forward Together.”
  • 16. It’s incumbent upon us to embrace this diversity,” Dr. Horan said. The University’s commitment to an equitable and inclusive University community is expressed through various actions. Lead by the University’s Senior Diversity and Inclusion Officer, these actions include: Ÿ Completion of a campus climate survey to evaluate where change was needed. Ÿ Completion of the University of Redlands Anti-Racist Statement that acknowledges the painful experiences of so many and endorses the University’s commitment to positive change. Ÿ Formation of a University Anti-Racism Committee composed of faculty, staff, students, cabinet members, and alumni to develop an anti-racism plan and ways to better elevate and consider the voices and perspectives from the university’s communities of Black, Indigenous, Latina/o/x/Hispanic, and people of color. Holistic Approach to Student Success and Global Engagement Dr. Horan emphasizes the University's commitment to student success through the establishment of a dedicated student success team. This team adopts a holistic approach, focusing on enhancing student success both within the classroom and through co-curricular activities. They work with students to help them plan and achieve their educa- tional goals while also providing access to various experi- ences that broaden their understanding of the business world. One standout program is the University's study abroad initiative, which is tailored to accommodate the schedules of many working professional students. These condensed 7- to-10-day experiences enable students to explore different cultures in Europe, Asia, and other regions while gaining insights into how businesses operate within these diverse cultural contexts. These experiences offer students first- Dr. Horan emphasizes the University's commitment to student success through the establishment of a dedicated student success team.

Furthermore, the University takes pride in its longstanding community service programs, which have a positive and tangible impact on local communities. These programs provide students with real-world experiences that not only contribute to their personal growth but also serve the betterment of the communities they engage with. Adapting to Changing Learning Models The University of Redlands has strategically utilized technology in its overall educational experience. “A special initiative that I’m leading is called, ‘Classroom of the Future,’is about how to integrate new technologies, not just Zoom rooms, but immersive technologies, AI (Artificial Intelligence), and other things we don’t even know about yet into the educational experience. At the same time, making sure not to lose the social and human-engaged aspects that make a university worth attending,” Dr. Horan said. As noted above, Redlands is also meeting students where they are through a merger with Presidio Graduate School. “There are many aspects that make this merger exciting, including the impact the school has already had in prepar- ing organizational leaders to address the challenges of environmental sustainability and social justice. One additional aspect is how the school uses low residencies to balance out the online learning environment. Immersive weekend-long, on-campus classes are now being held at our beautiful Marin campus and we are beginning to implement this model of low residency in our other degree programs, including our Master of Science and Organizational Leadership. More broadly, this model inspires us, as leaders, to think through how we balance the strong interest among our students to take online courses with the value that we, as educators, perceive in face-to-face communica- tion and collaboration,” Dr. Horan said. Encouraging Entrepreneurial Mindsets for Professional Excellence Dr. Horan highlights the University's approach to training students to become entrepreneurs within their respective professional settings. Many students are already pursuing careers they are passionate about, such as healthcare, education, or government, and they aspire to excel within these fields. The University equips them with the necessary skills to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset within diverse organizational contexts. What's particularly exciting is that over 50% of the University's students receive promotions while they are still in the program, demonstrating that they are actively applying what they are learning as they learn it. This tangible progress is a source of great enthusiasm for the University. Dr. Horan expresses the institution's intention to further develop the concept of 'intrapreneurship' and provide students with expanded opportunities to innovate and make a meaningful impact on the world. Culture of Service and Ethical Business Leadership The University boasts one of the most enduring service- learning programs in the collegiate landscape. For over three decades, undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences at Redlands have been required to fulfill a service component for graduation, often aligned with their academic interests. Students consistently go above and beyond the mandated service hours, gaining invaluable real- world experience while making a positive impact on their communities. This commitment has earned Redlands recognition as a top producer of Peace Corps volunteers and Fulbright students, further exemplifying the institution's dedication to service both locally and globally. “The School of Business & Society has embarked on a multifaceted initiative to explore how businesses can make a positive contribution to society beyond just financial profitability.” Their annual 'Business for a Better World' conference, organized through the Banta Center for Ethical and Purposeful Leadership, showcases purpose-driven busi- nesses as catalysts for positive social change and progress. This event delves into the role that businesses and nonprofits in the region play in advancing crucial economic, societal, and environmental priorities, while also consider- ing the implications for educational institutions. As part of this effort, the School of Business & Society collaborates with organizations like Esri, a global leader in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to develop programs that assist businesses in utilizing spatial informa- tion to comprehend the impact of their supply chains on communities and the environment, reinforcing the institu- tion's commitment to ethical and purposeful business practices.

  • 19. “This world leader is using GIS to not only make businesses succeed but to do so in a manner that is socially and environmentally responsible. We are delighted by this strong partnership with Esri, and that over 400 of students have gone on to work for them,” Dr. Horan said. Nurturing Careers and Lifelong Success Through OCPD The University's Office of Career and Professional Development (OCPD) is an invaluable resource for Redlands students from their very first day on campus and continues to support alumni throughout their entire careers. The OCPD is dedicated to fostering a university culture that encourages career awareness and opportunity, starting from the moment of admission until retirement. The office provides an array of services, including professional assessments, guidance for job searches, assistance with resumes, portfolios, and interview preparation, as well as managing referrals. University of Redlands graduates embark on successful careers in a wide range of fields, encompassing business, education, the arts, and more. Regardless of their chosen paths, they carry with them the broad perspective, problem- solving skills, and critical thinking abilities cultivated during their time at Redlands. Graduates also become part of a vast network of over 50,000 fellow Redlands alumni, contributing to a legacy that spans well over a century. Measuring Student Success and Alumni Satisfaction The University conducts annual assessments to gauge student success and program quality, with a focus on two key indicators: retention and graduation rates. Each fall, the institution evaluates the number of former first-year students who choose to return, while each spring, the number of students completing their degree requirements and graduating is recorded. While these metrics provide valuable insights, the most meaningful measure of student outcomes comes from graduate exit surveys and alumni feedback. A recent survey conducted in 2022 found that 84% of responding University of Redlands alumni expressed satisfaction with their career progress, a figure that exceeds the national average. Additionally, more than 90% of surveyed alumni reported gaining critical thinking skills through their education, and an equal percentage agreed that Redlands played a pivotal role in helping them understand career opportunities. Fostering a Culture of Lifelong Learning Dr. Horan emphasizes that at the University of Redlands, a commitment to lifelong learning is deeply ingrained in the institution's culture. This dedication to continuous learning is promoted and supported by leadership and educators across the campus. One of the fundamental missions of the Office of Career and Professional Development is to seamlessly integrate career and professional development into the classroom experience. To encourage and facilitate ongoing professional develop- ment and lifelong learning, the University has implemented a tuition remission program. This program incentivizes staff and faculty to further their education and skillsets. Addi- tionally, the University of Redlands Staff Assembly periodically organizes professional development events, including peer teaching sessions covering essential skills and programs. Moreover, Redlands offers a range of certificates and courses that cater to the demands of various careers and fields, making them accessible to faculty, staff, students, and alumni alike. A Vision for Inclusive Education in a Digital Age "Dr. Horan's vision for the future of the School of Business & Society at the University of Redlands is part of the institution's strategic plan, Forward Together." This vision is centered on the commitment to meet students "where they are." By creating a diverse range of programs and teaching methods that ensure accessibility for the entire student body, the University has transcended its original geographical constraints. The University of Redlands now maintains a presence in both Southern California at its traditional Redlands campus and in Northern California at the Marin campus. Additionally, all programs within the School of Business & Society are available online. This multifaceted approach combines the convenience and accessibility of online programs with the treasured and invaluable on-campus university experience. The aim is to provide students with an education that prepares them to succeed and lead lives filled with purpose and impact. Dr. Horan and the University of Redlands are committed to delivering the best of both worlds to their students, ensuring they receive a high-quality education that adapts to their diverse needs and circumstances.

This approach isn’t new, but recent enhancements make it dynamic. Restaurant Sibelicious, a training company, serves as a longstanding model. What sets us apart is our inclusion of industry partners, enriching the learning experience. In BUas’ learning communities, active student involvement is pivotal. Students lead their learning journey, emphasising process over the end product. It’s about the knowledge gained, the path taken and the growth mindset cultivated. Each learning community is unique, adapting to specific domains. For instance, Esports and Tourism Impact Lab form vibrant communities where knowledge evolves collectively. In Logistics, the learning community revolves around real challenges faced by transport company Arriva, involving not just students and lecturers, but also Arriva’s young professionals, creating a shared learning experience. The essence lies in mutual learning and the growth opportunities crafted for everyone involved. BUas’ learning communities inspire continuous development, nurturing a spirit of collaboration, innovation and lifelong learning. How do you measure the success of its initiatives in driving student success and career growth? One indicator is to look at success rates of our students. How many drop out, how many get their diploma within the desired time. But those are just quantitative numbers. The quality of education and research at BUas is demonstrated by high ratings in recognised international and national rankings. But perhaps the best indicator is that our alumni are successful and eager to come back to our campus to work together with students or be active in our community as a guest lecturer in a panel, during an industry event etc. Furthermore, alumni actively participate in our learning communities. In this way, valuable experience comes back into education, which empowers the new generation of students. December 2023 | 21 | www.insightssuccess.com

As the foundation for future learning and academic success, the early years of a child's life are a critical period for brain development. In this article, we will explore the significance of early childhood education in fostering cognitive growth and setting the stage for a lifetime of learning. Brain Development in Early Childhood The first few years of a child's life are marked by rapid brain development. During this period, the brain forms neural connections at an astounding rate, laying the groundwork for various cognitive functions. Early childhood education programs are designed to stimulate and nurture this development through age-appropriate activities that engage and challenge young minds. Critical Periods for Learning Research suggests that there are critical periods in early childhood during which certain skills and abilities are most easily acquired. Language acquisition, for instance, is particularly receptive during the early years. Early childhood education programs capitalize on these critical periods, providing an environment conducive to language development, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Social and Emotional Development Beyond cognitive skills, early childhood education also focuses on social and emotional development. Interactions with peers and teachers in a structured learning environment help children develop essential social skills, emotional resilience, and the ability to regulate their emotions. These foundational skills contribute to a child's overall well-being and lay the groundwork for successful future relationships. Preparation for Formal Education Early childhood education acts as a bridge between the home environment and formal schooling. It introduces children to routines, social expectations, and the basic skills necessary for success in a school setting. Activities such as art projects, imaginative play, and exposure to various stimuli contribute to the development of a child's creativity, fostering a lifelong love for learning. Language and Communication Skills: Early childhood education places a strong emphasis on language development. Children are exposed to rich language experiences through storytelling, conversations, and interactive activities. This not only lays the foundation for effective communication but also enhances the child's ability to comprehend and express thoughts, ideas, and emotions. Introduction to Technology: In the modern age, technology is an integral part of daily life. Early childhood education can introduce age-appropriate technological tools and educational software, helping children become familiar with technology in a controlled and educational setting. This early exposure prepares them for the digital demands of the future. Building Executive Function Skills: Executive function skills, including self-control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility, are crucial for success in school and life. Early childhood education activities, such as games that require planning and organization, contribute to the development of these executive function skills, enabling children to navigate challenges effectively. Fostering a Positive Attitude Toward Learning: Early childhood education aims to create a positive and nurturing learning environment. When children associate learning with enjoyment and success, they develop a positive attitude toward education. This mindset becomes a powerful motivator, influencing their approach to learning as they progress through their academic journey. Individualized Learning Every child is unique, and early childhood education recognizes and accommodates this diversity. Programs often incorporate individualized learning plans, taking into account each child's strengths, interests, and areas that may need additional support. This personalized approach maximizes the effectiveness of education, catering to the specific needs of each child. Long-term Impact on Academic Achievement Studies consistently show that children who participate in quality early childhood education programs demonstrate higher levels of academic achievement throughout their school years. The early cognitive stimulation and foundational skills acquired during this period contribute to a child's ability to grasp complex concepts, excel in various subjects, and approach learning with confidence. By providing all children, regardless of their background, with a strong educational foundation, society can mitigate disparities in academic achievement. Investing in early childhood education is not only an investment in individual children but also in the future of communities and nations. In conclusion, early childhood education serves as the cornerstone for cognitive development, setting the stage for a child's lifelong learning journey. The early years are a unique window of opportunity to shape the architecture of the brain and instil a love for learning. By recognizing the importance of early childhood education, we can empower the next generation with the tools they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. A bustling campus, abuzz with the energy of curious minds, where the pursuit of knowledge knows no bounds. Here, amidst the corridors of learning, students find not just classrooms but gateways to new worlds, expanding their horizons and nurturing their passions. It’s a place where the spirit of exploration is celebrated, where students are encouraged not only to question but to seek answers that have the potential to change the world. Let’s delve into an inspiration embodied in the form of an institution that continues to empower, inspire and pave the way for a future where innovation knows no bounds! We spoke with George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D., President and CEO of NSU, in an exclusive interview in which he shared valuable facts about NSU. Could you highlight some of the university’s most innovative programs or initiatives aimed at enhancing student success and career growth? The NSU Alan B. Levan | Broward Center of Innovation is a public-private partnership that functions as an economic development engine for South Florida. Broward County’s population is projected to surpass two million in 2025 and 25% of those residents will be between the ages of 20-39. These are the future startup founders that the Levan Center attracts to help them develop their innovative ideas and learn how to scale their businesses. Another innovative program is the Jerry Taylor and Nancy Bryant Trading Floor, which is currently under construction at our Fort Lauderdale Campus and set to open in 2024. The trading floor will give students hands-on experience in managing investments, with help from an advisory board of experienced investment professionals. Finally, I would note that our dual admission programs allow students to enter NSU at the undergraduate level and leave with a doctorate and ready to work as physicians, optometrists, psychologists, dentists, and other rewarding professionals. How does the university foster collaborations with industries to create opportunities for students? There are many spaces where NSU is active and building ties with organizations that are beneficial to our students. The Levan Center is helping to expand the growth of the hi- tech and biotech industries in South Florida. Tech workers are high in demand here and grew nearly 8% as a segment of the workforce between 2016 and 2021. The Levan Center also runs a military-grade cybersecurity range that can train professionals at all levels, including industry, government, and academia. Health care is a major area for NSU, and we established a partnership with HCA to have their University Hospital, located next to our Fort Lauderdale Campus, serve as a teaching hospital for our students. We are also building an advanced Interprofessional Simulation Complex, or SimCom, that will allow students to simulate real-life healthcare environments. The university is developing a comprehensive cancer treatment center with a hotel and conference center. This complete package will make the university a destination not just for Florida but also for Latin America. Could you share some remarkable success stories of alumni who have excelled in their careers after graduating from university? We have so many alumni who have built impressive careers in a variety of fields. One example is Lenny Comma, a graduate of our MBA program who was at the Jack in Box burger chain in various roles for 18 years, including as COO for four years and later as CEO for six years. About 60% of our undergraduate students go on to graduate programs and most of our Honors undergraduates are taking advantage of dual admissions. How does your educational institute promote mentorship and guidance for students throughout their academic journey? Our graduate students serve as mentors to undergraduate students in various ways, including at the NSU Write from the Start Writing and Communication Center, an innovative workspace where trained peer consultants help students with academic writing and communications projects. Graduate students also mentor students in online programs and at our regional campuses. This is an unparalleled advantage that grants undergraduate students access to superior mentorship. I would also point to our accredited M.S. in Anesthesia program offered at four locations including Denver, which has the most clinical rotation sites of any Anesthesiology Assistant program in the country. Additionally, the program is structured to provide one-on-one faculty mentoring so that students always have individualized support. In today’s rapidly changing job market, what efforts does the university make to equip students with future- ready skills? Our students have a long-term focus on their careers. Biology is our number one undergraduate major, as students come to NSU with a future in health care in mind. Many of those students take advantage of our dual admissions options to continue their graduate studies at NSU. Seventy percent of our student body is graduate and when they leave NSU, they are well-equipped for success in high- demand careers like Anesthesiology Assistants. NSU’s student loan default rate is also far lower than competing public/private universities, which means our graduates can start careers that let them thrive financially and pay down their loan obligations. Students are also encouraged to participate in NSU’s Undergraduate Student Symposium, which has been hosted annually by the Farquhar Honors College for more than two decades. The symposium gives students the opportunity not only to conduct research in a subject that interests them but also to hone their speaking and presentation skills. Our undergraduate students also engage in research in their discipline in their first year, compared to other universities. We have undergraduate students partnering with faculty members on graduate-level research and are listed as first authors and/or present research posters at national conferences. This invaluable experience prepares them for their future careers. How do you measure the success of its initiatives in driving student success and career growth? NSU measures its success in various ways, including our ranking in publications like U.S. News and World Report, or being recognized as a Military Friendly University. We also look at the reputations of our alumni, who are 210,000 strong globally and growing. An NSU Shark’s connection to the university doesn’t end when they walk the stage and receive their diploma. Many programs track student career outcomes as part of their accreditation process and that data is invaluable for shaping our curriculum to ensure that all our students are best prepared for success in their chosen fields. NSU offers resources to all alumni to help them with career development, job searches and networking opportunities. December 2023 | 29 | www.insightssuccess.com
  • 32. The Bridge of Progress The Role of Universities in Fostering a Culture of Innovation niversities play a pivotal role in shaping the Uintellectual landscape of societies, but their impact extends far beyond the realms of academia. One of the key responsibilities of higher education institutions is to foster a culture of innovation, providing an environment that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and groundbreaking ideas. In this article, we will explore the multifaceted role that universities play in fostering innovation and driving societal progress. Knowledge Creation and Dissemination At the core of a university's mission is the generation of knowledge through research and scholarship. Universities serve as hubs of intellectual exploration, where faculty and students engage in research activities that push the boundaries of existing knowledge.
