VISION

PROPOSED SOLUTION
1. Improve infrastructure for cold storage
2. Re-think the Supply Chain for PDS/National Food Security Ordinance
3. De-politicize the system; privatize and involve logistics companies
5. • Reduction in subsidies by Rs. 1.98 can save Rs. 154 Cr annually and can be re-
invested for developing cold storage infrastructure (See attached excel file)
IMPROVING INFRASTRUCTURE
RE-THINKING THE SUPPLY CHAIN
• Currently, the government wants to pick up grains from farmers, warehouse and
then re-distributing to the BPL
• This brings in numerous inefficiencies
• We need to utilize private 3PL providers to pick up create an efficient model of
distribution
• All the cash transfer should be done independent of delivery and should be carried
out by the Government via Direct Cash Transfer
6. • PDS should include pulses and other nutritional elements in order to ensure
complete health well-being
• PDS should be tracked using new technologies in the system to take care of
unscrupulous activity in the food supply chain
• NGOs can be involved to distribute food surplus in “office food courts” to the
nearby rural areas
- Such an initiative has been taken by students of IIT Madras to distribute surplus
food in mess area to the poor in and around Chennai
