Spectrum Simplifies Application Access for its Widely
Dispersed Workforce Using OneSign Anywhere™
for Single Sign-On
INTRODUCTION
Founded in 1999, Spectrum is a veteran-owned government contractor with 320
employees that serves the Department of Defense (DoD) and other federal agencies.
The company, which specializes in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance,
provides the National and DoD intelligence community with innovative, realistic and
affordable technology solutions. Spectrum also provides full system support — from
assessment to certification — and takes great pride in consistently exceeding client
expectations. In 2011 Spectrum ranked in the Inc 5000 listing of fastest growing
private companies for the fourth consecutive year; was named a Best Place to Work
by Inside Business; and received a Fantastic 50 Award by the Virginia Chamber of
Commerce for ranking as the state’s 18th fastest growing business. Spectrum is ISO
9001 certified.
THE BUSINESS CHALLENGE
Spectrum’s greatest IT challenge is finding ways to facilitate communication with
the company’s 70% dispersed workforce, members of which work at client facilities
located across the globe. “The number one complaint I got when we would survey
the employees was, ‘Why do I have to type in my login ID and password multiple
times when accessing the company intranet and other frequently used applications?’”
said Grant Keller, IT Manager at Spectrum. “I needed to make it as easy as possible
for employees to access applications and resources so they can stay up to date on
corporate goals, company news, and other important business — whether they work
at corporate headquarters or at some remote location.”
It became clear to Keller that the time had come to invest in a single sign-on solution.
However, due to the nature of Spectrum’s government contract work, Keller could not
load any software on the computers used by Spectrum employees at client facilities.
“Most of my users sit at a computer where they can’t even install a simple add-in;
it’s a very locked-down system,” noted Keller. “That’s why I needed a solution that
would be totally web based, with no client install, no add-in, and no ActiveX control
— nothing local.”
THE IMPRIVATA ONESIGN SOLUTION
After evaluating a number of options, Spectrum selected Imprivata’s OneSign
Anywhere™ solution which provides users with secure, authenticated single sign-on
access to the applications they need when they are outside the corporate firewall.
While other single sign-on solutions require agent installs or downloads that can
create manageability and support issues, OneSign Anywhere users just need an
internet connection and a web browser to gain authenticated single sign-on access
to their applications. Best of all, users can enjoy the OneSign Anywhere single sign-on
experience from a variety of unmanaged end devices.
Using OneSign Anywhere, Spectrum employees need to type in their login ID and
password only once to gain secure remote access to the company’s intranet, WebMail,
email archives, timecard system, an outsourced travel booking system, and an external
partner collaboration site. All the internal sites use Active Directory for authenticating
users and verifying their passwords.

The outsourced sites use web-based authentication. Whether they are at home, on the
road, or working from a remote client location, Spectrum’s OneSign Anywhere users are
able to access key applications and corporate resources using their choice of endpoint
devices.
“We have executives who are using OneSign Anywhere from their iPads down to
engineers who are using it from Macs,” states Keller. “I personally have used it from my
iPhone on occasions when I couldn’t remember my password to the travel booking site.”
Spectrum IT took a slow progressive approach to rolling out the solution. “We brought it
up through a couple of people at a time, starting with a selection of local employees who
we could sit down with and get a good feel for what was going on,” explained Keller.
“Then we expanded it to remote users who were easy to get in touch with and finally to
less accessible employees. We broadcast the OneSign Anywhere Users Guide out to all
employees and 95% of the employees were able to figure out the solution with the help
of that resource alone.”
THE RESULTS
Today, more than 80 percent of Spectrum employees have enrolled their credentials and
are actively using OneSign Anywhere, resulting in greater user convenience and time
savings of up to 15 minutes per day per employee. In the time it would previously take to
log into the company intranet and update their timecard, employees can now accomplish
much more.
“OneSign Anywhere has made it so much easier for our employees to get company
communications during the work day,” comments Keller. “So now our employees are
more up to date on company happenings without having to spend personal and family
time checking their email.”
OneSign Anywhere has made life easier for the Spectrum IT staff too. “From an IT
perspective, any time you make things simpler for the end user, it’s going to be simpler
for you,” adds Keller. “Now all I have to do is tell employees to go to the Spectrum portal
and from there they can log in once and get to everything they need.”
LOOKING AHEAD
As Spectrum continues to grow and add more employees, OneSign Anywhere has
become an integral part of the onboarding process.
“As HR processes new hires, instead of giving them a list of sites they’ll need to access on
a daily basis, now we just set them up with OneSign Anywhere and they’re good to go,”
concludes Keller. “It couldn’t be easier — at least that’s what my users are telling me.”

Spectrum Simplifies Application Access for its Widely Dispersed Workforce Using OneSign Anywhere™ for Single Sign-On INTRODUCTION Founded in 1999, Spectrum is a veteran-owned government contractor with 320 employees that serves the Department of Defense (DoD) and other federal agencies. The company, which specializes in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, provides the National and DoD intelligence community with innovative, realistic and affordable technology solutions. Spectrum also provides full system support — from assessment to certification — and takes great pride in consistently exceeding client expectations. In 2011 Spectrum ranked in the Inc 5000 listing of fastest growing private companies for the fourth consecutive year; was named a Best Place to Work by Inside Business; and received a Fantastic 50 Award by the Virginia Chamber of Commerce for ranking as the state’s 18th fastest growing business. Spectrum is ISO 9001 certified. THE BUSINESS CHALLENGE Spectrum’s greatest IT challenge is finding ways to facilitate communication with the company’s 70% dispersed workforce, members of which work at client facilities located across the globe. “The number one complaint I got when we would survey the employees was, ‘Why do I have to type in my login ID and password multiple times when accessing the company intranet and other frequently used applications?’” said Grant Keller, IT Manager at Spectrum. “I needed to make it as easy as possible for employees to access applications and resources so they can stay up to date on corporate goals, company news, and other important business — whether they work at corporate headquarters or at some remote location.” It became clear to Keller that the time had come to invest in a single sign-on solution. However, due to the nature of Spectrum’s government contract work, Keller could not load any software on the computers used by Spectrum employees at client facilities. “Most of my users sit at a computer where they can’t even install a simple add-in; it’s a very locked-down system,” noted Keller. “That’s why I needed a solution that would be totally web based, with no client install, no add-in, and no ActiveX control — nothing local.” THE IMPRIVATA ONESIGN SOLUTION After evaluating a number of options, Spectrum selected Imprivata’s OneSign Anywhere™ solution which provides users with secure, authenticated single sign-on access to the applications they need when they are outside the corporate firewall. The outsourced sites use web-based authentication. Whether they are at home, on the road, or working from a remote client location, Spectrum’s OneSign Anywhere users are able to access key applications and corporate resources using their choice of endpoint devices. “We have executives who are using OneSign Anywhere from their iPads down to engineers who are using it from Macs,” states Keller. “I personally have used it from my iPhone on occasions when I couldn’t remember my password to the travel booking site.” Spectrum IT took a slow progressive approach to rolling out the solution. “We brought it up through a couple of people at a time, starting with a selection of local employees who we could sit down with and get a good feel for what was going on,” explained Keller. “Then we expanded it to remote users who were easy to get in touch with and finally to less accessible employees. We broadcast the OneSign Anywhere Users Guide out to all employees and 95% of the employees were able to figure out the solution with the help of that resource alone.” THE RESULTS Today, more than 80 percent of Spectrum employees have enrolled their credentials and are actively using OneSign Anywhere, resulting in greater user convenience and time savings of up to 15 minutes per day per employee. In the time it would previously take to log into the company intranet and update their timecard, employees can now accomplish much more. “OneSign Anywhere has made it so much easier for our employees to get company communications during the work day,” comments Keller. “So now our employees are more up to date on company happenings without having to spend personal and family time checking their email.” OneSign Anywhere has made life easier for the Spectrum IT staff too. “From an IT perspective, any time you make things simpler for the end user, it’s going to be simpler for you,” adds Keller. “Now all I have to do is tell employees to go to the Spectrum portal and from there they can log in once and get to everything they need.” LOOKING AHEAD As Spectrum continues to grow and add more employees, OneSign Anywhere has become an integral part of the onboarding process. “As HR processes new hires, instead of giving them a list of sites they’ll need to access on a daily basis, now we just set them up with OneSign Anywhere and they’re good to go,” concludes Keller. “It couldn’t be easier — at least that’s what my users are telling me.”
