The
Problem
Contaminants like salt spray, cement dust, salt fog, industrial pollutants,
agricultural fertilizers and even desert sand can affect the performance of
high voltage insulators and lead to costly power interruptions.
When there is a contamination deposition on the insulators, it can cause
everything between leakage currents, dry-band arcing and air ionization,
and end up with power-threatening flashovers.

be washed.
15. The
Solution
Our line of silicone coatings, provide superior protection in highly
contaminated areas and polluted regions by avoiding power interruptions
due to excessive leakage current.
RTV insulator coating is a one part hydrophobic, UV resistant coating. Its
hydrophobic surface prevents water filming and encapsulates the pollution,
avoiding the ability of the contaminant to combine with water to form an
ionic solution.
16. The
Features
Hydrophobicity
High resistance to arcing and corona
Resistance to atmospheric and chemical degradation
UV resistant
Suppression of leakage current, discharges and pollution
flashover
Non-toxic and environmentally friendly material
High resistance to air, airborne pollutants, rain, humidity,
etc.
17. Hydrophobic surface prevents water filming
Surface oil (Cyclic) coats contaminant particles
and renders them hydrophobic
Reduces the contaminants ability to combine with
water to form an ionic solution
Maintains these features over the long life of the
installation
How does
HVIC protect?
19. How does
HVIC protect?
L.M.W
Layer of High Voltage Insulators Coating
Pollution particles
LMW silicone fluid diffuses from the bulk of the
coating to the surface acts to impart non-wetting
characteristics to deposited contaminants by
surrounding the particles with a monolayer of fluid.
Low molecular weight (LMW) components are
responsible for the hydrophobic surface of the
coating. Water repellence and a low surface energy
will be obtained on hydrophobic surfaces.
21. How does
HVIC protect?
Main characteristics of Midsun’s silicone coating: hydrophobicity
retention, recover and transfer across the contaminated layer
RTV provides a barrier between the insulator and potential contaminants
23. How to
Implement it?
Midsun HVIC can be applied in 4 different ways and they all maintain the
product’s effectiveness:
By paintbrush for small jobs
Air assisted / airless spray equipment
By dipping
Robot (Automated Application System)
24. The insulators’ surface must be totally clean and dry
before applying the coating to ensure proper adhesion of
the RTV coating to the insulator surface.

The material preparation involves the final mixing and
dispensing of the coating into the application equipment.
Midsun HVIC is supplied ready for use. There is no further
dilution necessary. The coating should be homogenized truly
to ensure an even dispersion for spraying. This can be done
by steering with mixer or by shaking or rolling of the
bucket.

required to fill the
recommended layer thickness.
The coating surface must become
track-free before application

37. TEN
Chile
Location: SINC-SING Interconnection, Chile
Problem: TEN wanted to interconnect the
central and north systems through a
double circuit of 500kV, while avoiding
electrical interruptions, maintenance tasks
and flashover outages, taking into account
extreme temperatures, desertic and coastal
locations. After calculating the costs for
this project, the utility would have needed
to wash the insulators a minimum of 4
times per year to ensure reliability of the
lines.
Solution: To coat their insulators with RTV
HVIC
43. SIEMENS
Egypt
Location: Al Burull, 500kV, ETTC
Problem: Al Burullu’s power plant is
located in a coastal region, which
means it’s affected by the ocean spray,
salt fog and other contaminants.
Regardless of the high creepage
distance, regular maintenance and
continuous cleaning of the insulators, in
May 2017 the conditions from this
heavily polluted area led to flashovers
and significantly affected the power
plant’s operation.
Solution: RTV HVIC
