  2. 2. Freely available facts and figures are essential for driving improvements in public services. It puts information, and therefore power, in the hands of the public and the service providers to challenge or demand innovation in public services.
  3. 3. The challenge of building more open, transparent and accountable public governance in Ireland is one of my key objectives as Minister; and this is being achieved in terms of the range of reform initiatives currently being implemented across public bodies. The Open Data Initiative is a key part of these reform activities. It is closely aligned with the Public Service Reform Plan, the ICT Strategy, and the Civil Service Renewal Plan. It is also a core element of Ireland’s Open Government Partnership (OGP) National Action Plan which I launched in July 2014. Open Data is a particular interest of mine. I see it as the new basic resource of the 21st century; and publishing it for re-use offers the possibility of real economic, social and democratic benefits. Speech by Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Mr Brendan Howlin TD at Open Data Event 30 June 2015
