The pictorial subject in “The Destruction of Civilization” is a unique work,
based on Exhibit 143, which depicts a cross in plain outline. While the
cross symbolizes holy civilization, the cross falling down symbolizes the
war that will destroy human civilization. This work was completed during
the Second World War period. The bold and spontaneous brushwork used
on a scene showing the turmoil of war, with dying lilies, symbolizes the
destruction of warfare on human civilization. These works also reiterate
Gao’s theory that anything can be taken as a pictorial theme, and modern
Chinese painting must be innovative and educational to reach the
common audience.
