BioB u s i n e s s
After 3.6 billion
years of research
and development,
failures became
fossils, and what
surrounds us now is
the secret to
survival.
Humans have to have a way to sustain their
living on this planet.
From about 30 million species on earth,
Humans can learn few things .. (inventions)

Note: Access to capital
alone is not sufficient!
Entrepreneurship
The creation of a new economic entity
centred on a novel product or service
or, at the very least, one which differs
significantly from products or services
offered elsewhere.
 Entrepreneur who starts the business from
scratch, creating brand for his products and
services.
 Businessman who follow up the market
trying to capture the existing customers by
doing some additional or value added
services in the existing products and
services category.
Businessman vs. entrepreneur
You have to be
An entrepreneur
Biopharmaceuticals
 Biopharmaceuticals are any medicinal
product manufactured in or extracted
from biological sources.
 They are proteins (including antibodies),
nucleic acids (DNA, RNA or antisense
oligonucleotides) used for therapeutic
or in vivo diagnostic purposes.
Global Market share
Global Biopharmaceuticals market is
estimated at
US$ 220 billion
It is further projected to reach
in 2014
US$ 500 billion
by 2020.
Bioenergy
 Biomass currently supplies about a third of
the developing countries’ energy.
 The increasing demand of energy implies
that biomass energy will be with us forever.
Sources of Biomass
 Coal
 Tyres
 Sugar Cane Bagasse
 Oil sludge/waste
 Energy crops
 Oil seed rape husks
 Rice and Corn husks
 Packaging Waste
 Chicken Waste
 Wood chips / waste

Most important bio-fuel crops
Biopharming
Biopharming is defined as ..
Growing transgenic crops
that produce pharmaceutical
products such as:
 Drugs
 Antibodies
 Proteins
 Plant- made vaccines (edible vaccines).
 Plant-made antibodies (plantibodies).
 Plant-made therapeutic proteins and
intermediates.
Plant-made Pharmaceuticals
Examples of edible vaccines under
development:
 Pig vaccine in corn.
 HIV-suppressing protein in spinach.
 Human vaccine for hepatitis B in
potato.
Plant-made Vaccines
 Plantibodies are monoclonal antibodies
produced in plants.
 Plants used include tobacco, corn,
potatoes, soy, alfalfa, and rice.
 Free from potential contamination of
mammalian viruses.
 Examples of diseases: cancer, dental
caries, herpes simplex virus, and
respiratory syncytial virus.
Plantibodies
Biopolymers
Biopolymers are polymers produced by living
organisms.
There are three main classes of biopolymers
based on the differing monomeric units
involved.
1. Polynucleotides, which are long polymers
composed of 13 or more nucleotide monomers;
2. Polypeptides, which are short polymers of amino
acids; and
3. Polysaccharides, which are often linear bonded
polymeric carbohydrate structures.
 Some biopolymers- such as polylactic acid
(PLA) can be used as plastics, replacing the
need for polystyrene or polyethylene based
plastics.
 Bioplastics are now oxy-degradable and UV-
degradable.
 They are suitable for domestic composting.
Bioplastics as a Biopolymer
Applications of
bioplastics
 bioplastics shopping bags
 Trays and containers for fruit,
vegetables, eggs and meat,
bottles for soft drinks and dairy
products are also already widely
manufactured from bioplastics.
Biopolymer market size
The biopolymers market growing at a
compound annual growth rate of 14.5%
is expected to generate global revenue of
US $ 3,700 million
by 2018
Bioeconomics
 Bioeconomics is the discipline originating
from the synthesis of biology and
economics.
 It is an attempt to bridge, through the
concept of holism and interdisciplinary
methodology, the empirical culture of
biology and the literary culture of economics
Biobankonomics
 A biobank is a repository of biological
samples.
 It is where biospecimens could be stored
and retrieved.
 It is fast growing as a business in the era of
Biomedicine.
Human Biospecimens include:
 Tissue samples
• Biopsy
• Resection of tissue (surgery)
• Dissection of tissue (autopsy)
 Body fluid samples
• Blood
• Sputum
• Urine
• Bone marrow
Biorobotics
What is Biorobotics?
 Field covering cybernetics, genetic
engineering, and robotics.
 Research into the use of various forms of
robotics to create replace limbs, lifelike
robots, and possibly enhance the human
body.
Why Bio-Robotics?
 Animal-Like robots are playing a huge role in
combining the fields of biology and
engineering.
 There are several uses for bio-robotics:
• Tactical Military Uses.
• Disabled People.
• Advancements in the fields of Biology,
Engineering ..etc..
Robotic Insects
Roboinsects: six-legged or eight-legged walking robots
have given important clues to understanding the neural
control mechanisms in walking insects.
Biomimicry
Biomimetics or biomimicry .. is a new science
that studies nature's models and then uses
these designs and processes to solve human
problems.
Bioadhesion
 Bioadhesion is the state in which two
materials, (at least one of which is biological
in nature), are held together for a extended
period of time by interfacial forces.
 The term bioadhesion implies attachment of
drug-carrier system to specific biological
location. This biological surface can be
epithelial tissue or the mucous coat on the
surface of tissue.
Gecko Tape
Gecko Tape is a material
covered with nanoscopic hairs
that mimic those found on the
feet of gecko lizards. These
millions of tiny, flexible hairs
exert van der Waals forces that
provide a powerful adhesive
effect.
Biosteel
Spider silk is a protein fiber secreted by
spiders. Spiders use their silk to make webs
to catch other animals, or as nests to
protect their offspring.
Many products have been produced from
spider silk (called biosteel).
Biocomputers
 Biocomputers use systems of biologically
derived molecules such as DNA and proteins
to perform computational calculations.
 Although this field still in its infancy,
hundreds of millions were spent in the way
to develop the ultimate DNA computer.
Advantages of Biocomputers
 Performs millions of operations at same
time.
 Ability to use large amounts of working
memory
 1 gram of DNA can hold 1 x 1014 MB of
data
 Or 145 trillion CDs
 1 CD is 800 MB
Medical Applications
 DNA computers known as computational
genes would be integrated into the genetic
material existed in the patients cells.
 Computational genes are similar to ordinary
gene DNA markers.
• They will be programmed to react to a certain
input with a certain output.
• Replacement of coding for protein structure.
Bioweapons
 Gene technology is also used in
military laboratories that study and
develop biological warfare agents or
test defensive strategies (e.g.
vaccination).
 Agents can be made more resistant
and available for military use through
gene technology, so that, for example,
they will survive a bomb explosion.
Bioelectronics
Bioelectronics .. is a relatively young and
interdisciplinary science bordering on bio-
chemistry, bio-physics, molecular biology,
biotechnology, nanotechnology and
microelectronics.
Biosensors
 Biosensors are based on the direct
coupling of a biologically active
component, the signal transmitter, with
a signal converter (transducer).
 Various bio-molecules will serve as
electronic components and will be
used to produce biochips.
Agribusiness
• Soybean,
• Cotton,
• Maize, and
• Canola.
The cultivated biotech crops
The agribusiness global market revenue
of biotech crops In 2014, estimated to be
$ 22.84 billion.
Be your own Boss
 Being an entrepreneur is a high-risk, high-
reward position.
 It's full of stressful situations, sure, but it's also
chock full of rewards and a sense of
accomplishment.
 It's not as hard as it seems -- as long as you
have some patience and a good idea, you'll be
your own boss sooner than you think!
See what others see, but think of
what they don’t think of!
Be different!
ONLY you
who makes you!
Miracles are everywhere
around, just open your
heart
to see them
Thank you

  • 14. Global Market share Global Biopharmaceuticals market is estimated at US$ 220 billion It is further projected to reach in 2014 US$ 500 billion by 2020.
  • 16.  Biomass currently supplies about a third of the developing countries’ energy.  The increasing demand of energy implies that biomass energy will be with us forever.
  • 17. Sources of Biomass  Coal  Tyres  Sugar Cane Bagasse  Oil sludge/waste  Energy crops  Oil seed rape husks  Rice and Corn husks  Packaging Waste  Chicken Waste  Wood chips / waste  Straw  Nut shells  Sewage sludge  Olive pips  Bone meal  Leather waste  Animal litter
  • 20. Biopharming is defined as .. Growing transgenic crops that produce pharmaceutical products such as:  Drugs  Antibodies  Proteins
  • 21.  Plant- made vaccines (edible vaccines).  Plant-made antibodies (plantibodies).  Plant-made therapeutic proteins and intermediates. Plant-made Pharmaceuticals
  • 22. Examples of edible vaccines under development:  Pig vaccine in corn.  HIV-suppressing protein in spinach.  Human vaccine for hepatitis B in potato. Plant-made Vaccines
  • 23.  Plantibodies are monoclonal antibodies produced in plants.  Plants used include tobacco, corn, potatoes, soy, alfalfa, and rice.  Free from potential contamination of mammalian viruses.  Examples of diseases: cancer, dental caries, herpes simplex virus, and respiratory syncytial virus. Plantibodies
  • 25. Biopolymers are polymers produced by living organisms. There are three main classes of biopolymers based on the differing monomeric units involved. 1. Polynucleotides, which are long polymers composed of 13 or more nucleotide monomers; 2. Polypeptides, which are short polymers of amino acids; and 3. Polysaccharides, which are often linear bonded polymeric carbohydrate structures.
  • 26.  Some biopolymers- such as polylactic acid (PLA) can be used as plastics, replacing the need for polystyrene or polyethylene based plastics.  Bioplastics are now oxy-degradable and UV- degradable.  They are suitable for domestic composting. Bioplastics as a Biopolymer
  • 27. Applications of bioplastics  bioplastics shopping bags  Trays and containers for fruit, vegetables, eggs and meat, bottles for soft drinks and dairy products are also already widely manufactured from bioplastics.
  • 28. Biopolymer market size The biopolymers market growing at a compound annual growth rate of 14.5% is expected to generate global revenue of US $ 3,700 million by 2018
  • 30.  Bioeconomics is the discipline originating from the synthesis of biology and economics.  It is an attempt to bridge, through the concept of holism and interdisciplinary methodology, the empirical culture of biology and the literary culture of economics
  • 32.  A biobank is a repository of biological samples.  It is where biospecimens could be stored and retrieved.  It is fast growing as a business in the era of Biomedicine.
  • 33. Human Biospecimens include:  Tissue samples • Biopsy • Resection of tissue (surgery) • Dissection of tissue (autopsy)  Body fluid samples • Blood • Sputum • Urine • Bone marrow
  • 35. What is Biorobotics?  Field covering cybernetics, genetic engineering, and robotics.  Research into the use of various forms of robotics to create replace limbs, lifelike robots, and possibly enhance the human body.
  • 36. Why Bio-Robotics?  Animal-Like robots are playing a huge role in combining the fields of biology and engineering.  There are several uses for bio-robotics: • Tactical Military Uses. • Disabled People. • Advancements in the fields of Biology, Engineering ..etc..
  • 37. Robotic Insects Roboinsects: six-legged or eight-legged walking robots have given important clues to understanding the neural control mechanisms in walking insects.
  • 39. Biomimetics or biomimicry .. is a new science that studies nature's models and then uses these designs and processes to solve human problems.
  • 40. Bioadhesion  Bioadhesion is the state in which two materials, (at least one of which is biological in nature), are held together for a extended period of time by interfacial forces.  The term bioadhesion implies attachment of drug-carrier system to specific biological location. This biological surface can be epithelial tissue or the mucous coat on the surface of tissue.
  • 41. Gecko Tape Gecko Tape is a material covered with nanoscopic hairs that mimic those found on the feet of gecko lizards. These millions of tiny, flexible hairs exert van der Waals forces that provide a powerful adhesive effect.
  • 42. Biosteel Spider silk is a protein fiber secreted by spiders. Spiders use their silk to make webs to catch other animals, or as nests to protect their offspring. Many products have been produced from spider silk (called biosteel).
  • 44.  Biocomputers use systems of biologically derived molecules such as DNA and proteins to perform computational calculations.  Although this field still in its infancy, hundreds of millions were spent in the way to develop the ultimate DNA computer.
  • 45. Advantages of Biocomputers  Performs millions of operations at same time.  Ability to use large amounts of working memory  1 gram of DNA can hold 1 x 1014 MB of data  Or 145 trillion CDs  1 CD is 800 MB
  • 46. Medical Applications  DNA computers known as computational genes would be integrated into the genetic material existed in the patients cells.  Computational genes are similar to ordinary gene DNA markers. • They will be programmed to react to a certain input with a certain output. • Replacement of coding for protein structure.
  • 48.  Gene technology is also used in military laboratories that study and develop biological warfare agents or test defensive strategies (e.g. vaccination).  Agents can be made more resistant and available for military use through gene technology, so that, for example, they will survive a bomb explosion.
