People respond with more passion and commitment when they feel they are involved in something that has personal meaning
How do we define the DAMA organisation in terms of it’s greater purpose?
Difficult change, as we have become used to defining ourselves by what we do and not the outcomes we are trying to achieve
Once we change our thinking, we are able to create emotional buy-in!
Example: Blake Mycoskie (TOMS Footwear) – changed our belief that shoes are fashion items to, for some, shoes are life expanding, with shoes we can walk further, perhaps to a doctor, get clean water, or find a job.
Leave commercial imperatives aside (don’t ignore) and think in terms of our communities.
The easiest emotional hooks to direct our members toward giving their best efforts in support of DMA, is an understanding that the deeper purpose of our existence is to do something greater that what we do operationally.
We are BECAUSE you are! (UBUNTU)
One of the main reasons for DAMAs existence is to provide skilled Data Management professionals to organizations that demand data management services to fulfil their data strategy.
We don’t exist to “feel good”, to become a “band of brothers” or support each other “divorce care”. Those feelings and relationships are certainly side-effects of people with common challenges but not why people dedicate hours to making DAMA work.
We exist BECAUSE people who operate in roles like CDO, CIO, COO & EIM Head are required and obligated to look after the information within their organization. This need to manage information will never end and new initiatives like “Open Data” is showing us how data management professionals can now add value to our communities and our country.
To assess who we are, I feel that it is important to examine the “current state”. To examine the current state I would like to use the 6 capitals defined by Link IV to review the demand from the stakeholders and the supply of data management professionals. Then we look at what impact DAMA SA is having in South Africa.
What is the current situation (As-Is)?
1. Financial Capital
Whilst we are financial stable, we are not growing. The question I can’t completely answer is” Do we need to grow financially and why?”. My natural response is FOR SURE, WHY DO YOU EVEN ASK! We can see with the growth of CDO Forum who openly state that they are NOT a NPO. DAMA on the other prefers the NPO side of the scale. I have seen more negative consequences when a community decides to establish this as a driver. That doesn’t mean we should run at a loss or continually beg for money.
