Alternative Rock - Fashion & Image
1. ALTERNATIVE ROCK

This is some further research I have done surrounding my chosen genre of
Alternative Rock. I am looking further into the general image of artists amidst this
genre, mainly what they wear, their hair and makeup but also how they present
themselves through posture and poses.
2. This is a screenshot I have taken from google images once I had searched ‘Alternative
Rock Fashion’. The first thing I noticed was the commonly used colours, appearing to be
black, grey and white so they all look very intense and they also stand out as it is different
to most trends and styles that are popular. Another suggestion that came up when I
searched this was the style of ‘grunge’ which is pretty much the same style as ‘alternative
rock’ and so I have also looked into that as well.
4. GENERAL IMAGE/POSES
If there is an individual
artist on the front, the
tend to be in either a
mid shot or a close up,
all these artists are lead
singers from bands so I
have noticed that there
are many more
alternative rock bands
than solo artists.
When the front cover has
a band on it, they tend
to look quite fierce, no
smiles or soft looks,
they’re all staring at the
camera intensely, also
there are often shadows
or some sort of effect on
the image such as black
and white.
In alternative rock magazines there are
often very similar poses used. I’ve noticed
that very rarely are the artists smiling, I
think this is to make them stand out and
seem more interesting or different. Also
more popular artists and genres of music
will have a more positive image used on
the front which will be quite common but
because this genre isn’t as popular they
make themselves seem more different,
but also with some of these images it
makes them seem intriguing because
they’re staring rather than just looking at
the camera, for example with the ‘Rock
Sound’ magazine on the right and the
top left ‘Kerrang’ magazine.
