STOKENEWINGTON STATION
A numberof local residentsand groups(Stoke NewingtonCommonUsersGroup(SNUG) andBelfast
RoadPlayingOut) have pulledtogethertosupportimprovementstoStoke Newingtonstation.Through
discussionswith Groundwork, EnergyGardens, ArrivaandTFL, we have developedthree mainsetsof
ideas.Tosupportthiswork,we received agrantfromTescoBags forHelp and are now lookingfor
supportto implement theseinitiativesinearly2018.
OVERVIEW
Objective: To improve Stoke NewingtonStation and make it a more enjoyable touse
Project1: To install murals around the station.
Project 2: To create a plantingbedtoimprove the side of the station.
Project3: To install anirrigationsystem tosupplywaterto the tothe new planting
bedson the platformsandto the new bedto the side of the station.
OBJECTIVE
We wantto improve the lookandfeel of StokeNewingtonstation. While there are some improvement
worksbeingundertakenbythe rail companies, local groupsand residentsfeel thataesthetic
improvementswill be beneficial tothe local community andourenvironmentandwill enable Stoke
Newingtonstationtoreflectthe diversenature of ourresidents. The plantingwillcreate greenspace in
a densely populatedurbanareaandhelpmitigate carbonemissionsfromthe nearbyA10andassisting
biodiversityinthe area.
We feel thisisanopportunity whichcan benefitthe followinggroups:
Commuters
Local residents
Stationstaff
Volunteers
o Bringingthe communitytogether tosupportandbe directlyinvolvedin local initiatives
o An opportunityto directand/orundertake strategicdesign,planning, project
management,landscaping,gardening andart
o An opportunitytosupportthe projectfinancially
PROJECT 1: THE MURALS
We are lookingtolocal artiststo developadesign(s) forseveralspaceswithinthe station.Inparticular
we are lookingforeye-catching,brightandcolourfuldesignswhichwill provideinterest,be long-lasting
and able toendure a highdegree of wearandtearand possibly abuse.Successfuldesignswill be
attractive toa range of local people andreflectthe local areathroughimagery.
3. 11/13/2017 Stoke Newington Station 2
The locationsavailable are:
a) Each stairwell (2)
b) The wall at the top of stairwell forSouthernboundplatform
c) Glassfrontage andsidesof the building (whichmaybe more suitedto plastic/vinyloverlays)
d) The wall of the tree Planterinfrontof the station
And

e) Outside alcove surround(wherebedswill be forProject2)
Themes couldinclude:
The diversityof Stoke Newington
The Historyof Stoke Newington
Nature/the natural world
But reallywe are opentoideas
PROJECT 2: THE PLANTING BED
The area to the leftof the stationentrance isan eyesore and attractsrubbish,litteringandanti-social
behaviour.We are lookingtodeveloparaisedgardenbedtohostplantsthatwill improve the
aestheticsof the space, helpthe environmentand shelterthe large bins(withtrellisingandclimbers)
and one lastsome years. We will designaplantingsystemthatislow-maintenance. resistantto
draught,seasonal changes,possiblysome abuse andprobablyafairamountof ammonia(Ideallywe
are lookingforalemontree).
5. 11/13/2017 Stoke Newington Station 4
The ideais tocreate at leasttwo plantingbedsat twolevels:one shallow bedatthe frontthat istoo low
to encourage sitting/sleepinginthe bed.A higherbedatthe back (approx 1m depth) will be able to
sustaina small tree,shrubs, the trellisedclimbersandotherplanting.
Potential buildingmaterialsinclude railwaysleepers (possiblysuppliedby Arriva), andconcrete
breezeblocks,whichcanbe painted.Butwe welcome alternativepractical ideasthatare cheap,resilient
and easytomaintain.
Our nextphase istodevelopthe detailedbuilding andplantingplans.Overthe longer-term, we will
organise communitydaysto undertake plantingandpossiblyworkwithEnergyGardenstomake better
use of the the beds (onthe platform).
PROJECT 3: WATERING/ IRRIGATION SYSTEMS
All the plantingwill be designedtoreflectLondon’sgenerallydrysummersandthe value andscarcity
of water.Tothisend,relatively drought-resistantplantswhichdonotrequire excessivewateringwill be
selected(forexamplechoosingplantsoriginallyfromthe Mediterraneanandotherdryareas).
Nonethelesstomake anyplantingendure,itneedsanirrigationsystem,especiallyinthe earlydaysto
helpnew plantsestablish. Moreover,plantsgrownincontainersrequiremore regularwateringthan
those placeddirectlyintothe ground anditisessential toavoidplacingexcessive relianceonlocal
volunteersorstationstaff tocarry large amountsof wateraroundthe station and potentiallyinjure
theirbacks.
To helpconserve waterwe wanttobe able toutilise asmuch rainwateraspossible andwelcome
practical designideas tomake bestuse the run-offfromthe mainstationbuildingandconcourse.
We hope to install atleastthree large waterbutts, one oneachplatformandthe third inthe outside
alcove tosupportthe landscapinginproject 2.We hope tosource buttsfromHackneyCouncil and
place theminareas closedtothe general public. We are currentlywaitingforanupdate fromArrivaon
the feasibilityof this.
