2. What is the Internet
The Internet is a large group of computers that are
connected to each other. The Internet is used to
send information quickly between computers
around the world. It has millions of networks and
websites, which together carry many different
kinds of information and services.
3. the link between domain names
and IP addresses
A domain name is very similar to an address forwarding
service. The domain name is the address people type in
their web browser to get to a web site. The domain
name then points to the real address that contains your
web site. The real address is called the IP address and
is a few numbers, such as 123.45.678.90. This IP address
then points to the location on the server that contains
the web site files.
The reason the internet uses domain names instead of IP
addresses is because for most people a name, rather
than a series of numbers, is much easier to remember.
So, a domain name points to an IP address, which in
turn points to the web site which allows users all across
the Internet to view the web page.
4. data packets and packet
switching
When a certain piece of data, for example an email
gets passed a long the internet to another user, it is
broken down into data packets and as it is passed
along in suitable sized packets the network detects
where the piece of data is supposed to go. and the
data is then re-assembled at the point where it has
reached it’s destination.
5. Internet routers
A router acts as a warden which keeps everything
running smoothly and it stops things from getting
all jumbled up. An internet router makes sure that
data travelling around the internet reaches its
destination and doesn’t end up where it is not
needed. In performing these jobs, a router is
extremely useful in dealing with two separate
computer networks. It joins the two networks,
passing information from one to the other.
