.
Teachers struggled with the mouse. It was the very
first time on a pc. Progress was very slow and I had
to repeat steps many times as well as personally
assist the slower ones. Their eagerness and
willingness made the effort worthwhile. It was a
large group of around 20 teachers.

An outcomes based approached were followed. Introducing the outcome of the lesson and then explaining
the usage of the tool in order to achieve the outcome. I demonstrated step-by-step and the teachers followed
and stopped me when they got stuck. I moved between the desks to provide assistance to those who where
struggling.
Tools in this case refer to Microsoft Word.
I used a PowerPoint presentation on the whiteboard to guide teachers through the steps of creating the
spreadsheet.
Methodology
9 | P a g e
THE TEACHERS:
The training did not go as planned. The teachers were very eager, but the pace was slow due to their lack of
prior experience. Most of them did attend all three sessions. They could only attend 2 hours per session due
to personal reasons. They were all at beginner level, but some showed a natural inclination and snapped
quickly, while others were extremely slow in comprehension. Most struggled extremely with the mouse. The
quicker learners assisted in explaining to slower students. All were extremely friendly and co-operative and
expressed gratitude and a desire to learn more in the future. Most came to the realisation how computers can
assist them in their duties as educators.
THE STUDENTS:
Once the students grasped the possibilities of the software, I could not drag them away from the computers.
They expressed their desire to return for more. The audio visual interactive nature of the software engaged
them fully. The workshop was a huge success in this regard. I mostly covered Encarta and used step by step
lessons, assisted by other teachers, to familiarise them with the mouse. For all of them it was their very first
time in front of a pc.
THE SCHOOL:
I was received with an open heart and was treated well by both teachers and students.
The lab was in mint condition and well looked after. I had everything I needed for the training workshop.
Conclusions & Feedback
10 | P a g e
1. Identification of different levels in computer literacy in both teachers and students prior to
commencement of the workshop.
2. Teachers and students must be taught about the dangers of viruses and must be educated on how to
properly scab USB devices before opening on the PC.
3. Connection of the internet needs to be sorted out so that DSTV and the internet can be accessed.
4. More emphasis on Excel since most teachers struggles more with it than with Word. PowerPoint
should be secondary to Excel and Word.
5. The Workshop sessions for teachers should be held within school hours. Rural school teachers are
dependent on lifts and can only stay until 15:30.
6. Regular access to the lab for students with assignments or projects. Those students should be given
preferential treatment above other students who just want to play.
7. The training schedule for the teacher sessions must be worked out prior to the trainer’s arrival and
given to him/her upon arrival.

  • 9. 9 | P a g e THE TEACHERS: The training did not go as planned. The teachers were very eager, but the pace was slow due to their lack of prior experience. Most of them did attend all three sessions. They could only attend 2 hours per session due to personal reasons. They were all at beginner level, but some showed a natural inclination and snapped quickly, while others were extremely slow in comprehension. Most struggled extremely with the mouse. The quicker learners assisted in explaining to slower students. All were extremely friendly and co-operative and expressed gratitude and a desire to learn more in the future. Most came to the realisation how computers can assist them in their duties as educators. THE STUDENTS: Once the students grasped the possibilities of the software, I could not drag them away from the computers. They expressed their desire to return for more. The audio visual interactive nature of the software engaged them fully. The workshop was a huge success in this regard. I mostly covered Encarta and used step by step lessons, assisted by other teachers, to familiarise them with the mouse. For all of them it was their very first time in front of a pc. THE SCHOOL: I was received with an open heart and was treated well by both teachers and students. The lab was in mint condition and well looked after. I had everything I needed for the training workshop. Conclusions & Feedback
  • 10. 10 | P a g e 1. Identification of different levels in computer literacy in both teachers and students prior to commencement of the workshop. 2. Teachers and students must be taught about the dangers of viruses and must be educated on how to properly scab USB devices before opening on the PC. 3. Connection of the internet needs to be sorted out so that DSTV and the internet can be accessed. 4. More emphasis on Excel since most teachers struggles more with it than with Word. PowerPoint should be secondary to Excel and Word. 5. The Workshop sessions for teachers should be held within school hours. Rural school teachers are dependent on lifts and can only stay until 15:30. 6. Regular access to the lab for students with assignments or projects. Those students should be given preferential treatment above other students who just want to play. 7. The training schedule for the teacher sessions must be worked out prior to the trainer’s arrival and given to him/her upon arrival. Recommendations
