This document discusses PMS (Piping Material Specification) contradiction issues that arise when the assigned service for a pipe line is not compatible with the designated pipe class. This mismatch can occur due to lack of understanding of PMS documents by process engineers and licensors. The document provides details on how to identify such issues by comparing the line list and PMS index and resolving them by communicating discrepancies to relevant parties. It highlights potential problems if not addressed such as quality issues, additional costs and future complications.

3. WHAT IS PMS CONTRADICTION ISSUE?
PMS Contradiction issue is nothing but a mismatch of
service with assigned Pipe class for a given line number.
In other words, assigned service for the line is not
available in designated pipe class. This happens because
that particular pipe class is not designed for this service.
This is a fundamental mistake by Process Engineer
and/or Licensor Engineer.

4. WHY THIS TYPE OF ISSUE ARISES?
•Lack of basic understanding & importance of PMS.
•Negligence towards other discipline documents.
•Wrong concept or understanding - whatever given
by the Licensor is correct. Hence, resistance to issue
any comments to Licensor and carry out any further
changes.
•Don’t want to spend man hours

5. HOW TO IDENTIFY THIS ISSUE?
“PMS Contradiction issue” can be easily detected by
referring PMS index and Line list. Only thing is one
shall have basic understanding of PMS.
Further slides will demonstrate how this issue can be
identified.

Real pipe class for “Steam (SL) service” in PMS is
“A2A”. However, Pipe classes such as “A67A”, “A6N”,
“B67A” & “B6N” was also specified in Line list for
steam service. This issue usually occurs when any
utility service meets or taps into process line.
Such locations can be identified in P&IDs.
9. WHEN AND HOW TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE?
At initial stage (BDEP) of the project, Process and/or
Core material Engineer shall identify this issue and
highlight it to Licensor for getting it resolved before
acceptance of process documents.
If not identified at BDEP stage; then, Core Material
Engineer has to go through “Line list” and “Pipe class
index” to identify this issue. He or She shall
immediately sent comments on Line list and P&IDs to
Process Engineer with proper back-up.

10. WHEN AND HOW TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE?
Project Manager shall be kept in loop in order to get
it resolved at the earliest. At later stage, no one will
accept the changes unless it is really affecting much.
•Logically wrong concept which will create complete
confusion at the working level during Engineering,
Construction & Operation phase due to
contradiction between documents.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE PROBLEMS THIS
ISSUE?
11. WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE PROBLEMS THIS
ISSUE?
•Due to many hidden services which are not
covered in every pipe class can challenge
quality of PMS, P&IDs and Line list.
•There may be chances of additional cost due to
additional testing spool quantities etc.
•Future consequences can occur as same PMS
will be followed for future plants.

12. WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE PROBLEMS THIS
ISSUE?
•Increase in count of lines and isometrics which
in turn increase cost of erection, transportation
etc.
