Film Analysis: Of Mice And Men
The movie started with a great hook that really lured the watcher in. The lady screaming grabs your attention and makes you want to find out why
she is screaming. After that, the hook continues in showing Lennie and George running away from men who are hunting them. This would make
people want to see who they are, why they're running, and who the people chasing them are. The movie had great cinematography as well. It
showed a lot of symbolism and foreshadowing. The movie also used good camera angles, and techniques. Such as how Candy typically would cover

The theme of power is prevalent throughout the novel Of Mice and Men. Steinbeck uses various methods and techniques to establish the dynamics of
power on the ranch. In the first extract, George and Lennie are in the brush and we get a strong sense of George's parental control over Lennie, but it
also shows how Lennie's physical stature gives him a degree of power over George. In extract two we meet Curley for the first time, and his authority

Steinbeck also uses many question marks to show how Lennie is constantly asking questions and therefore constantly seeking guidance from George,
and again, that's what gives George the edge over Lennie.
When discussion moves to the bus tickets and work cards Lennie realises that he doesn't have his. "He looked down at the ground in despair" which
shows that he is ashamed and perhaps a little frightened of George's reaction, but Steinbeck then goes on to say that George took responsibility for
both of the work cards, knowing that Lennie could not be trusted. This, again, demonstrates the balance of power and shows that both George and
Lennie are aware of how much power the other possesses.
After looking for his work card in his pocket, Lennie take out a mouse to which George replies sharply.
"What'd you take outta that pocket?"
George's tone is accusatory which shows that he is astute. He then continues to bombard Lennie with questions, which gives Lennie the chance to
demonstrate another type of power – his cunning. He attempts to deceive George.
"Ain't a thing in my pocket"
Although childlike, this sentence shows that Lennie's mind is able to think of plans. How would he keep the mouse? By attempting to deceive George.
Eventually, George's patience wears thin and he exclaims "Give it here!" shouting at Lennie like a parent.

Text Analysis 'of Mice and Men'
In the excerpts George and Lennie are two friends, one smart the other intellectually disabled, both on a 'mission' to achieve the American dream.
Their journey reveals a lot about the two. Lennie is a follower, in that he follows and imitates George's every move. Lennie also suffers from a
mental disability. It is also understood that they are from a working class upbringing. In the case of Lennie, it becomes very clear throughout the novel
that he is a 'follower'. He follows George everywhere he goes, even going to the extent of imitating George, "Lennie, who had been watching, imitated
George exactly", (11–17). This clearly and blatantly shows and supports the 'follower' notion, while at the same time showing Lennie's insecurity.

The mere fact, that the very character that plays the largest part in Lennie's death and the ultimate demise of the American Dream for the two main
characters, does not have a name goes to show the sexism of society at the time, thus promoting a patriarchal context. Finally it is seen through
Curley's actions towards his wife. "You can talk to people, but I can't talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad" (92–97) shows the domination of
the male figure. That Curley is able to control his wife in such a manner strongly re–enforces the patriarchal view. Language plays a large factor in
revealing the age of the context in which the novel is set. The language used in the dialogue plays the biggest part in this. The only swear words
mentioned are 'Bitch' and 'Bastard', and while these words are still offensive in the novel's context, they are the only words used, dictating a much
older context. If the text were a modern one the characters would posses a much larger arsenal of swear words thus, the context is an older one. Other
dialogue features that point towards an older society are the use of grammar, but more importantly the phrases and words used. Words such as "Tramp"
and "Jail–Bait" are not terms used today (instead replaced by "Slut" and "A ticket to the can" respectively) the former showing an older setting. The
racism shown towards Crooks also displays the age of the context of the novel. When Crooks says "I ain't wanted in the bunkhouse... 'Cause I'm black"

George and Lennie are the main characters, which makes them most important to the book's content. Their friendship and dream about having an
own farm are most valuable for the story, since the plot is based on these factors. Crooks and Curley's wife are on the other hand just as important as
the previous characters, but they are more important for the linking between the book and The Great Depression than to the actual plot. These
characters reflect how the society looked like in the past, which creates a perception of reality. For example, Curley's wife has no name, which

Final Reflection
My writing from freshman year demonstrates that my strengths as a writer are creating a hook, relating my point to the reader, and writing an
introduction. One of my strengths as a writer is creating a hook. For example, in my Of Mice and Men Dreams Essay, I demonstrated this aspect in my
introduction paragraph. A hook is the first sentence of anessay. It's job is to grab the reader's attention within the first look at the composition. The
hook I used was "What encourages people to strive for success?" Using a question allows the reader to think of an answer or response themselves,
then I later gave the answer further in the essay. Another one of my strengths is connecting the hook to the reader, "Dreams are a necessity for
