Our Mission
At Big Bend Community Based Care our sole
purpose is to provide the highest quality child
welfare, substance abuse and mental health
services to children, adults, and their families
within their communities through a managed
network of accredited providers.
Our Vision
Our vision is to create local ownership and
effective integration of the child welfare and
substance abuse- mental health systems in each
of our 18 communities. By doing so, we believe
that the quality of life for children, adults and
families we serve will dramatically improve,
resulting in personal independence and stronger
communities.
Building Stronger Families in
our Community
Giving Every Child a Chance
In the Big Bend 12 county region there are over
1,500 children receiving In-Home and Out-of-Home
services on any given day. Many of these families
are coping with domestic violence, parental drug
and alcohol abuse or mental health problems. When
adults are unable to provide children with a healthy
home environment, the consequences are
enormous. At Big Bend Community Based Care our
sole purpose is to provide the highest quality child
welfare prevention and intervention services to
children and their families within their
communities. Our vision is to create local ownership
of the child protection system in each of our
communities.
Manage a Quality System of Care
At Big Bend Community Based Care we believe that
every child has the right to grow up safe, healthy
and fulfilled in families that love and nurture them.
We focus on the following Core Values to guide us in
our work:
• Empower all persons served
• Respect the caregivers of children
• Be innovative and dedicated to excellence
• Be ethically, socially, and culturally
responsible
• Promote family and personal responsibility
• Partner with community and faith-based
organizations to foster open and
collaborative relationships
• Earn the trust and respect of our partners,
customers, and the public by providing
exceptional customer service while
practicing sound fiscal stewardship
• Employ an analytic and systemic approach to
planning and performance management
• Facilitate a work environment that
encourages professional growth and
development
Serving the Community
Big Bend Community Based Care was created in
2002 as a direct response to Florida’s Legislature
and Department of Children and Families
initiative to improve child welfare services by
developing solutions to care for children and
families in their home communities.
Child Abuse Prevention Services
Big Bend Community Based Care works hard to
keep a child at home with their parents whenever
possible. By providing child abuse prevention
services we can help families avoid the situations
that lead to abuse and neglect. Services include:
• Family counseling
• In-home supervision
• Voluntary protective services
• Parent training
Case Management Services
Big Bend Community Based Care partners with
local agencies to provide case management
services to the children and families in the child
welfare system. Case managers assist children
and families in managing difficult life events,
monitor living situations, and recommend abuse
prevention services such as counseling, parent
training, and supervision.
Foster Care Services
We directly oversee the placement of children in
foster homes. Our placement responses are
guided by our commitment to place children in
homes that provide stable and supportive
environments. Our partner agencies recruit foster
parents through a screening and training process
that is both rigorous and supportive. Our goal is
to recruit and retain foster parents of the highest
quality who can provide stability and support to
all of our children.
Traditional Care
Traditional Foster Care is for children who have
temporarily been removed from their home
because of abuse or neglect. In some cases, it is
necessary to immediately remove a child from the
home. Foster home placements can be for a short
or extended period of time. While a child is in
foster care, every effort is made to improve the
family situation so the child can, if possible, safely
return home.
Specialized Medical/Therapeutic Care
Children who have been intensely traumatized by
their previous families often require specialized
medical and therapeutic care to overcome the
physical harm and emotional damage they have
suffered. Additional training and support are
provided.
Respite Care
This service offers short-term care providing a
much-needed break for foster parents
Independent Living Services
Independent Living services were implemented
as a means to help youth in foster care better
prepare to live on their own. Types of services
available to youth ages 13 to 23 years old include:
Pre-Independent Living Services, Life Skills
Services, Subsidized Independent Living,
Aftercare Support Services, Extended Foster Care,
Post-Secondary Education Services and Support
Program (PESS) and Transitional Support
Services.
Adoption Services
Every effort is made to help a child remain with
his or her family. However, in some cases parental
rights must be legally terminated and the child
becomes available for adoption. As with foster
placement, Big Bend Community Based Care and
its partner agencies provide numerous support
services to all of our adoptive families such as on-
going training and continual staff support.
