Soil fertility-Missouri Study
Key Questions:
Are overall weed infestation levels associated with specific
nutrient and/or soil pH levels in pastures?
Could they identify any specific weed-nutrient and/or weed
pH relationships?
Source: Dr. Kevin Bradley, University of
Missouri

Methods
Survey conducted in
Missouri Pastures at 14-day
intervals throughout each
season (April-Oct)
1, representative 20-m2
Sampling area was
surveyed per 10 acres of each
pastures
Consumer & Professional Solutions
Soil fertility-Missouri Study
• 37 of 46 (80%) pastures surveyed were classified as
having low or very low soil P levels
• 17 of 46 (37%) of pastures surveyed were classified as
having low or very low soil K levels
• Average soil pH in the pastures surveyed was 5.8
• Optimum nutrient uptake occurs at 6-7
Consumer & Professional Solutions
Soil fertility-Missouri Study
Based on a survey of 46 Missouri pastures in 2015-2016:
• A 1-unit increase in soil pH corresponded to ~4,100 fewer
weeds per acre
• Each 0.1 ppm unit increase in P and K corresponded to
162 and 12 fewer weeds per acre, respectively.

How to estimate brush density
• Calculate brush density in multiple areas of your pasture
• Calculate an average brush density for your pasture
• Determine the cost of broadcast treatment per acre
• Is your cost for IPT greater than the cost of broadcast
treatment?
66 ft.
66 ft.
Consumer & Professional Solutions 31
Individual Plant Treatment
• Must have plants where you can
get good coverage
• Typically less than 6 feet
• Works well for area with low
density
• Works well for small area with
high density
• Typically highest mortality rating
Consumer & Professional Solutions
• Cost approximately $6.00 per acre
• Will need access to property
• Tank capacity up to 2400 gallons
• Best control over GPA and droplet size
Ground Application
