A former resident of Nashville, Tennessee, Heidi Jewell now serves
Denver-based VOCO Creative as a senior account manager. In her spare
time, Heidi Jewell enjoys exploring Denver to indulge her passion for
photography. Here are some lighting tips for photography novices:
1. Distance – As a general rule, the closer your photo subject is to a
light source, the softer the light will shine on the source. The opposite
is true for subjects that stand a fair distance from the light source,
however, the light source will fall off and become dimmer should the
subject stand too far away.
2. Using the flash – While your flash helps you take pictures in dark
conditions, it can also help fill out scenes and eliminate silhouettes. For
example, if you take a picture of a subject with a strong, focused light
source behind it, your camera’s flash is useful for eliminating the
shadows the other light source creates, leading to a clearer picture that
illuminates the detail on the subject’s front.
