• The name Gauteng was coined in
1994 after the province got renamed
from Pretoria-Witwatersrand-
Vereeniging (PMV)
• Gold in South Africa was first
discovered in the province of Gauteng
• As a commercial and industrial
powerhouse, it attracted people of the
working class from all walks of life
and became of the most multicultural
places in the country
• Most struggle heroes called the
townships of Gauteng home at some
point in their lives

• Gauteng comprises some the
country’s most famous townships,
cities and towns
• Soweto is a township that needs
no introduction, home to the
Soweto towers and Vilakazi Street
(the only street in the world
housing 2 Nobel Peace Prizes)
5. Demographics
• Gauteng is vastly multiracial, with Black, White,
Coloured and Indian communities
• Has the richest people and the poorest people
• Gauteng has the biggest and tallest buildings in the
country and the most homes made from
corrugated iron
6. Economy
• Gauteng is no doubt the
country’s business hub
• A lot of activities contributes
to the country’s economy,
especially the mining of Gold
• However, the job market is
not friendly to everyone.
Hence, your street vendors,
recyclers, miners (both legal
and zama-zamas), security
guards, the ones in office
jobs and everyone in
between.

7. Transport
• As a commercial powerhouse,
Gauteng’s commuters use different
types of transportation to get to their
respective places of work, to school or
to places of entertainment.
• There is the metro rail for the
commuter on a budget; the Gautrain
for speed; the taxis and the eagles in
the sky to go to other provinces or
outside of the country.

• The Gauteng province has one of the best Provincial Governments in the country, with the
education department outdoing itself year in and year out.
• Some schools situated in townships are poorly resourced, but the learners do perform well
• This province is home to internationally acclaimed universities, University of Pretoria,
University of Johannesburg, University of Witwatersrand, and University of South Africa
9. Conservation
• There is no doubt that Gauteng is
an urban jungle, believe it or not,
the province boasts zoos, game
lodges, botanical gardens and
overall, beautifully natural places of
tranquility
10. Sport and
Recreation
• From soccer matches between
Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando
Pirates, dancing the weekend
away at Maboneng, applauding
a performer at the Pretoria State
Theatre, to enjoying a lazy
Sunday afternoon at the
Neighbourgoods Market, one
can truly say Gauteng has it all
• The vibrant and unapologetic
province that never sleeps
