5. History of Uptown
• Only sparsely settled in the nineteenth century,
Uptown has become one of the densest and most
ethnically diverse residential areas of Chicago. Uptown
is one of Chicago’s 77 community areas. The historical,
cultural, and commercial center of Uptown is
Broadway, with Uptown Square in the center. For a
time, all northbound trains from downtown ended in
Uptown. From here Uptown became known as an
entertainment destination. Charlie Chaplin, Gloria
Swanson and other early film stars produced films at
the Essanay Studios on Argyle Street. For over a
century, Uptown has been a popular Chicago
entertainment district, which played a significant role
in ushering several musical and theatrical ages.

10. Group reflections
• The experience of traveling to Uptown
together, as a group, granted us the
opportunity to explore the city of Chicago and
become better acquainted with areas other
than Rogers Park. We also had the chance to
work together as a team in order to organize
the trip, as well as take in the culture of
Uptown. The neighborhood itself is a rather
small, quaint area that is family-friendly and
pleasing the the eye.
