2. Primary Functions
The brain is one of the most important organs in the human body. The brain
controls everything from behavior, personality, and attention capabilities to
sense of touch, coordination of movements and physical reactions.
>The typical brain is about 2% of a persons
body weight but uses 20% of its total
energy and oxygen intake.
>Your brain is 73% water. It takes only 2%
dehydration to affect your attention,
memory and other cognitive skills.
>90 minutes of sweating can temporarily
shrink the brain as much as 1 year of
aging.
>A piece of brain tissue the size of a grain
of sand contains 100,000 neurons and 1
billion synapses all communicating with
each other.
Fun facts about the brain
>The average brain has around 50,000
thoughts per day and 70% of them are
believed to be negative.
>Teen brains are not fully formed until
about the age of 25.
3. Dire to the Human Body?
Yes the brain is
definitely vital to our
life. Without a head or
brain we die within
seconds.
Our hearts wouldn't
pump, and our lungs
wouldn't breathe. Our
ears wouldn't hear and
our fingers wouldn't
feel or even move!
Studies from actual people born with only one hemisphere of
their brain show that it’s possible to live without a whole brain. A
24 year old Chinese woman walked into the hospital due to
dizziness and she found out that her entire cerebellum was
missing. Her cortex compensated for the loss, using
neuroplasticity.
Doctors have also
used
hemispherectomy
on patients with
severe seizures. It
completely stopped
the seizures from
happening.
4. Common Brain Diseases
Alzheimer’s Disease
>5.3 million Americans have Alzheimer's (2015).
Autism
>1 in 68 children
Cerebral Palsy
>8,000 babies and infants are diagnosed
Dyslexia
>1 in 10 people have dyslexia
Epilepsy
>1 in 26 Americans will develop epilepsy in their
lifetime
Parkinson’s Disease
>60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson's
disease each year
Tourette syndrome
>1 of every 360 children 6 through 17 years of age
5. Why the Brain?
I chose the brain because It’s very
interesting to me how one organ
makes our entire body function.
This 3 pound organ is responsible
for our entire personality, our life
long memories, or language input,
our skills, and much more! The
human brain definitely deserves the
recognition it gets.
