2. WHAT IS THE INTERNET?
• OxfordDictionaries.com gives the definition of the internet as:
“noun
(the Internet) a global computer network providing a variety of information and
communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized
communication protocols.”
• Think of it like the motorways connecting cities together, without these direct connections
it is a lot harder to get information to and from different computers.
3. HOW DOES IT WORK?
• Your computer (the client) sends a request over your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to a
Domain Name Server (DNS).
• The DNS looks for your request. If it finds a match it will forward the request to the correct
servers Internet Protocol (IP) address.
• If it can’t find a match it will send the request to another server with more information.
• When that request reaches the correct Web Server, the server will then send the
information required back to the client via a series of packets – different parts of a file to
be pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle by the clients web browser.
