BSES Yamuna Power Limited has set a national
record in AT&C loss reduction of 45.3% - more than
4.5% loss reduction per year against the National
Averageof0.5%.
Amongst BYPL operational highlights are the
following facts:
• Only discom in Delhi to have a 100%
electrified area.
• Successfully met the maximum power
demand in Summer 2012 of 1461MW - close
to 50% increase over the maximum power
demand of 798MW in 2002-03.
• Consistently operates its distribution network
with a class leading reliability of 99.84%
(March2011)asperCEAnorms.
• In the last ten years, customer base increased
from 7 lakh customers in 2002 to 12.5lakh
customers in 2012.

2. Introduction
BSES Yamuna Power Limited(BYPL), like power
companies all over the world is actively looking at
solutions to future proof the distribution network
and make them ready for integration with smart
grid transmission networks.
As the only discom to have a 100% electrified
area, we understand the importance of optimizing
power distribution network. Strengthening and
monitoring 11KV networks, we realize is the key to
reduction of AT&C losses and ensuring power for
all.
Technology aids BYPL in managing material and
manpower to monitor its network. BYPL now offers
its expertise in the form of Modular Integrated
Distribution Automation System (MIDAS) - the
value-for-money solution in automation of
11KV/415Vdistributionnetwork.
MIDAS is the result of our in-house pool of
Engineers work to find solutions for predictive
maintenance of networks, which allows for
substantial reduction in maintenance costs while
increasing reliability and quality of power supply.
MIDAS allows for remote monitoring of the health
of 11 KV network equipments, quick location of
faults and even predicts faults prior to their
occurrence. MIDAS is capable of sending auto
alerts via sms. It is a cost effective, easy to use and
implement solution to efficiently manage 11KV
distribution grids with minimum service
disruptions.
2. Distribution Transformer Unit (DT): Conveys
input received from LT Palm Temperature Sensor
(connected to R,Y,B line of DT, Oil Temperature
sensor, Oil Level Sensor, Door
Sensor) and sends it to the
F R T U u s i n g R S - 4 8 5
communication.
3. RMU (Ring Main Unit): Monitors input from
Isolator, Breaker, FPI, CBCT (neutral current),
SF6 Gas pressure of RMU and sends it to the
FRTU using RS-485 communication
4. Fault Passage Indicator (FPI):
Provides visual or remote
indication of a fault on the
electric power system.
6. Communication medium: Modem, General
Packet Radio Service (GPRS)
7. Front end web base application: Provides real
time status of different substations and their
corresponding parameters (sensors and meter
data).
FRTU Specifications
To cater to ever increasing power demand, power
distribution companies need to look at capacity
augmentation and optimisation of their power
distribution networks to eliminate bottlenecks.
MIDAS has been specifically designed and
developed to work at the 11KV/415V distribution
substation level. So far similar SMART
applications have been implemented only at
66KV grid level.
On an average, rectifying distribution transformer
downtime takes upto 24 hours. However,
substations with predictive fault, conditioning
monitoring system “MIDAS” in place, will be able to
reducetheirdowntimebyapproximately85-90%
