1. NO OTHER CHANCE: PAKISTAN STAYING
IN FATF LIST
BY HARSH KUMAR
Two explosions, within a gap of five minutes, rocked the high-security Air Force
Station in Jammu in the early hours of Sunday. The firstblast ripped a hole in the
roof of a single-storey building, while the second one was on the ground in an
open area. Investigations revealed that under the cover of darkness, low-flying
drones wereused to drop payloads carrying explosives inside the defence
establishment, in a firstof its kind attack. The investigation into the attack on the
Jammu air forcestation has been handed over to the National Investigation
Agency (NIA).
What happened earlier. On Mar 31st
PrimeMinister Imran Khan has written a
letter to his Indian counterpartNarendra Modi, saying creation of an “enabling
environment” is imperative for a constructiveand result-oriented dialogue to
resolveall outstanding issues between Pakistan and India, in particular the Jammu
and Kashmir issue. Mr. Khan said that creation of an “enabling environment is
imperative for a constructiveand result-oriented dialogue.”
The militaries of India and Pakistan announced on February 25 that they have
agreed to strictly observeall agreements on ceasefirealong the Line of Control in
Jammu and Kashmir and other sectors. At FATF hearings, the Imran Khan
governmentsaid it had introduced and amended terror financing laws, which
have enabled the prosecution of more than 30 UN-proscribed leaders and their
associates, for terror financing. While it is unclear how many of those are actually
serving jail time, the convictions and prison terms, between 15-30 years area
break fromthe past, when Pakistaniauthorities would hold these leaders on
charges under international pressure, and subsequently releasethem. Then the
biggest question arises why Pakistan using two sides faces strategies.
In my point of view Pakistan wants two things: trade balance with India and he is
also pointed out always article 370. India’s exports to Pakistan fell around 16 per
cent to $1.82 billion in 2016-17from$2.17billion in 2015-16after relations
2. deteriorated in the aftermath of the Uri terror attack and the Indian Army’s
surgicalstrikes on militant launchpads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in 2016.
Despite continuing tensions, trade between the two countries grew marginally in
subsequentyears; Indian exports rosenearly 6 per cent to $1.92 billion in 2017-
18, and then by around 7 per cent to $2.07 billion in 2018-19. Imports from
Pakistan, though much less in volume, also increased by 7.5 per cent to $488.56
million in 2017-18 from$454.49 million in 2016-17.Growth of imports from
Pakistan slowed to around $494.87 million in 2018-19 —an increase of around 1
per cent – before political relations entered a deep freeze in 2019
Also, the relations further nosedived after India withdrew specialstatus of Jammu
and Kashmir and bifurcated the State into two union territories in 2019. Since
then, India and Pakistan are withouthigh commissioners in each other’s capital —
New Delhi and Islamabad, respectively.
Then the solutions may: Say No to Terrorism, Pakistan’s hopes of being let off the
Financial Action Task Forces grey list weredashed once again; due to this the
trade relation will remain hampered. And they both face the losses of $1.82
billion. Other solution Pakistan should agree with the article 370 so they can
reduce the conflicts. An the last one is Accountability of Terror Financing Laws so
that the terrorismflagdown and peace flag will be uplifted.
